It's weird, aside from a slight lack of pace he seems to be the identikit of what Rodgers is looking for in a defender, yet he's yet to cement a place in the side or get a consistent run. He can bring the ball forward, is by far the most comfortable defender we have on the ball.
Don't see a lack of pace myself, he's got a massive stride and covers ground pretty quickly.
Being able to carry the ball forward at a decent pace once he gets moving is good....but for defenders speed over the first few yards from a standing start can be more important.

BRENDAN Rodgers last night admitted he would have no hesitation starting Kristoffer Ajer against Rangers next week after the teenager helped Celtic keep a clean sheet in their game against Aberdeen yesterday.

Ajer impressed as the Parkhead club romped to a 3-0 triumph against their nearest rivals in the Ladbrokes Premiership at home yesterday to move eight points clear of the Pittodrie club at the top of the table.

The 19-year-old Norwegian defender was brought in following the 4-0 loss to Hearts at Tynecastle last Sunday which ended the Scottish champions' 69-game winning run.

After helping the Scottish champions beat Partick Thistle 2-0 on Wednesday night and then Aberdeen, Rodgers has conceded he is contention for the Old Firm match at Celtic Park on Saturday.

"It doesn't matter to me what age someone is," said Rodgers. "It's just picking the best team each game to get the result. I would have no hesitation. He has got the qualities, it's just about getting him experience.

"We're in a real tough schedule of games and our focus is only on the next game. We will be in Christmas Day training and then we will travel to Dundee and pick a team to put that intensity and focus into the game to hopefully get three points there and only then will we think about the Rangers game.

"I thought he [Ajer] was brilliant. I said that in the changing-room to all the players. This is a boy last year when I came in, 18 years of age, 6ft 5ins, but just needed some men's football.

"We sent him to Kilmarnock and he was taught very well by both Lees [Clark and McCulloch] when he was there. I found when he came back in the summer he was a man. He played in some of the Champions League game and did very well.

"At six foot five, he's fast, he can carry the ball and now he wins his aerial challenges, so he's a big prospect for us and he was very good."

Played well yesterday, brought the ball out from the back more than a few times to good effect. As a converted midfielder, certainly a better option than Bitton on yesterday's showing, but whether he can do it consistently remains to be seen.
Slightly cautious optimism just now, whether BR reverts to Boyata and Simunovic for the Glasgow derby or sticks with Ajer we shall see.

Think Boyata and Simunovic have blown it as a partnership, BR put plenty of trust in them and this season its just not happened

Perhaps both have their minds on pastures new.

Thought he played very well yesterday and it was a toss up between him, Brown and Armstrong for motm. Really hope he gets the gig for the foreseeable as he deserves it.

Also thought he handled Rooney very well which wouldn't have been easy.

Lot of promise can still be guilty of ball watching at times also needs to work on his headed clearances to find a Celtic player, shades of McManus heading it back where it came from. Coming along well though showing good confidence in bringing the ball out of defence

That's it exactly I think. Like Bobo, for example, once he gets going he's powerful but it takes him a while to get up to that speed. Intelligent players can cover a couple of yards by positioning and reading the game well, so I'm not too bothered about a lack of pace in my defenders, especially in Scotland where a simple ploy creates 30 yards for him to move into. I'd much rather they were quick of thought and are able spot the right pass out of defence a couple of passes in advance so we can play out better in Europe, when 3 rapid, intelligent forwards are closing us down.

Very assured on Saturday, I think playing alongside an experienced central defender (not Boyata) will be great for him.

Need to get him on a Kolo Toure power programme to fill him out a bit in the summer

You serious? Boy is built like a brick shampoohouse. If anything, I'd say rein it in to keep his mobility good. Still young and filling out.

Shades of virgil when he is strolling with the ball.

Not really for me.

When he's in full stride he reminds me a bit of Wieghorst on the ball

Only 1 mistake the whole game, and even that didn't cause any problem. Should be a definite starter against Sevco

Love the way he actually has his head up and is looking for a pass when bringing it out of defence.

Still not sold on his dependability as a CB howevet

Deserves to stay in the team. Calm and confident. Will get better and better in that position, simply by playing more games.
