Quoting limited to 3 levels deep
He looks more athletic than O'Connell.
Agreed. I just couldn't warm to O'Connell. He didn't let us down but he just wasn't good enough imo. I'm sure in a gallop over 100 meters Ajer is no slouch but when I say lacking pace I am, of course, talking about a burst of pace over a few yards from a standing start. If you can't get out of the blocks you're in trouble and that is the only thing that worries me. Obviously his sheer size is going to affect this aspect of his game.
Just read this and understand your reservations a bit now. I do think that big units like him do have slower reaction speed over short distance.👍🏽

 The vast majority of 'runs' a central defender will be required to make are short bursts over a few yards. Rarely does pace over a distance come into play. He looks a bit slow out of the gate to me but then at 6 foot 5 he is going to.

Made an amazing tackle in the last ten before we scored the second. Stopped a one on one with Gordon.

Played very well throughout the game without being really tested however.

He doesn't lack pace at all? :ponder:

Composed young lad. If he got a chance I feel he'd take it and wouldn't be out of his depth domestically.

He wants to be a doctor when he finishes playing.

He inspired confidence in me with this performance. I'd be happy to give him a shot in the Astana game and can see no reason why he shouldn't expect 15 or so games this season given the mixed bag of CBs and their respective injuries so far. Him, Bitton, Lustig and KT are all highly acceptable stand-ins this season but i'm not 100% on any of them playing there in Europe. Domestically though i'm very pleased.

I've been highly impressed with him, I didn't buy into the hype when we signed him and probably harshly never held out much hope for him but he looks calm and compossed, well beyond his years and apparently is a spunge for information, I'm excited to see how he progresses with us over the next 12-18 months, he reads the game ever so well for one so young.

Like Ralston, suffering from a rumour.

Ralston is not lacking in pace, Ajer is also not lacking in pace.

Saw he scored an OG and thiught he'd be getting some stick but looks like Bitton, Lustig and Gordon are getting the brunt of it.

Apart from the OG did he do ok?

Saw somebody on here this morning hoping to see Ajer play 15-20 games for us this season.
I very much don't hope to see that.

Another season out on loan would do him good.

probably panicked a bit but badly let down by his more experienced team mates who should be able to keep the ball better to prevent him from being put under pressure

i'd still have him as my 5th CB this season, bring in rivaldo and one more and get rid of sviatchenko

Unless Ajer is playing beside an experienced Centre Half, please do not play him against ANY half decent teams, the boy has still a long, long way to go.

I laugh to myself as people rave about strolling through a game against feckin Kilmarnock. In the friendly against Lyon, his frailties were blatantly obvious.

The friendly against Lyon, when he played beside Nir Bitton.

Maybe keep them apart.
