He's one big unit with something about him. Game time has brought him on and I'd loan him somewhere to guarantee games in January.

People forget he's a pup

Nothing positive to say after a teenager makes an impressive league debut for us?

In relation to Ajer?

His lack of pace might worry you but how about commenting on his overall performance?

I have given him lots of praise in general  He is a powerful guy with good technique. Lots of potential. Reminds me a bit of Rogne. He does lack pace though and like O'Connell that can be a deal breaker in that position. We'll see.

Fair enough

I don't think he's overly slow, certainly faster than O'Connell

I can't tell if he's slow or if his gait is so big that it looks slow but he's actually covering a lot of ground :ponder:

He looks to me like he could be a really top player. I would already play him ahead of Bitton (who has done fine recently). Given a few more games I think he would become our best footballing centre half. To have that level of composure at that age in that position is exceptional. I wouldn't loan him out. We need 4 centre halfs and I would be happy for Sviatchenko and Bitton to go and him to be one of the four, including a new signing.

I don't think he looks any quicker than O'Connell and certainly not over the first few yards which are the ones that really matter in that position. With such a big guy I wouldn't expect much else. That's not to write him off in any way, he is clearly a kid with a lot going for him.

Agreed. I just couldn't warm to O'Connell. He didn't let us down but he just wasn't good enough imo. I'm sure in a gallop over 100 meters Ajer is no slouch but when I say lacking pace I am, of course, talking about a burst of pace over a few yards from a standing start. If you can't get out of the blocks you're in trouble and that is the only thing that worries me. Obviously his sheer size is going to affect this aspect of his game.

There was a point in the match (think it might have been when he went up for a corner?) when the ball was cleared. The far side you touchline when watching on TV. He chased back against a breaking Killie player to see the ball out. Funny looking running style, looked stiff and admittedly he wasn't rapid but didn't look slow either. Kept pace with the breaking Killie player. To be honest I never thought he looked too slow.

Good centre backs can make up for a lack of raw pace with good anticipation and positioning. Ajer will improve these things with time and game experience, and his athleticism will improve as well
