We drew 1-1 with St. Johnstone on Monday. We didn't use Ajer or any first teamers. Conceded a penalty and Mark Hill equalised. Doohan saved another penalty from the Saints and we missed one ourselves. Next game is against Livingston in the Irn Bru Cup on Saturday at 5:15. It's live on Premier Sports or Eir Sports in Ireland.

It'd probably be funny but he was signed last year as a first team replacement for denayer/van dyck

I really hope some youth players,, Including Ajer , get some first team experience in the league and didn't cup games this season

There's a bit of a debate going on about Ajer in another thread – http://kerrydalestreet.co.uk/topic/11000013/93/

I was wondering what sort of level he was playing at before he came here.

Could any posters with knowledge of the Tippeligaen (Norwegian Plastic?) provide an idea of how IK Start compare to Scottish teams?

I must admit I didnīt watch Start much this season, so I could hardly have a qualified opinion about how Ajer performed before he joined Celtic. Iīve been reading the match reports, however (player ratings etc.), and it didnīt look like he was anything special. Reportedly, he has become tougher and more physical in his style of playing compared to last year (like he was advised during his visit at Celtic), but Start is sure to be relegated and I guess he was suffering a bit from playing for a shampoo team.

Edit: Is not so easy to compare Tippeligaen to SPL, but Celtic would sure be favourites to win the league also in Norway, but with more teams competing for the second place. The teams are more even in Norway, although Rosenborg are leading with a mile this year. Last year we had two teams competing in the EL, while we have none this year. A bit unlucky perhaps, as 3 of the teams went out in added time or penalty shootout (including Rosenborg in the champions league).

Would it be fair to compare us signing Ajer, to buying a promising youngster from a mid-table Scottish Championship side like, say, Dumbarton or Falkirk?

I donīt think thatīs a fair comparison. Remember a lot of clubs in Europe were after him and I donīt think Dumbarton or Falkirk (or many Scottish teams at all) have any youngsters with Ajerīs reputation. I.e how many top European clubs have shown interest in Henderson or Christie?

Edit: In Norwegian media it was reported that Herta Berlin, Roma, Tottenham and Liverpool were interested in signing him. I believe he chose Celtic because of Deila.

Fair enough (and thanks for commenting, by the way).

I just wonder if we're placing too much expectation on him just now.

Edited to reduce levels of quoting.

I'm sure if anyone knows about developing youth it's Brendan Rodgers.

Ajer is very much a promising youngster. I reckon he's in the same bracket as Henderson for us but maybe won't get quite the same amount of first team game time this season.

He's very young. He's got the physical attributes. He's got decent technical attributes. It just all needs improved over time.

Don't think anyone believes we've an absolute superstar on our books. But he does have a lot of potential.

Personally I didnīt have very high expectations when it was first announced that he was signing for Celtic. In contrary, I said I didnīt expect him to play much for the first team his first season.

In preseason, however, I was a bit surprised he did as well as he did, although I thought some of the praise he got in here was a bit over the top (typically for a young player, IMHO). I, like many others, thought perhaps he would be a contender for a place in the first team, but obviously Rodgers sees it differently (probable with good reasons and I would think he understands football a bit better then the average KDS member, myself included).

Hate to have to say it, but, this particular project has got Ronny's fingerprints all over it :suspect:

This tends to make me rather more uncomfortable, than I usually would be, regarding a promising youngster :twitch:

Time will tell, though I really don't expect it to be anytime soon!

Here's hoping am wrong...

So he's not promising?

Have you recovered from the shock of Everton not handing us McCarthy just because he really, really wanted to play for us?
