Di Canio.. but he was swapped
And he was dying to leave, was working his ticket as soon as Tommy was sacked.

I think the term used was "traded". I agree he worked his ticket by trying to get "one thin dime" rightly or wrongly out of wee Fergus :)

Quoting limited to 3 levels deep
Davie Hay.
I thought Davie did want to leave, he was getting paid well below what a player of his standard should have been on.
According to Bertie Auld in his book quoted above posts Hay came back from the World Cup in 74 and had decided to settle his differences with the club and accept what Celtic had put on the table but Chelsea had come in with a bid of £250k and the club took it. Hays wage went up from £65 to £210 a week at Chelsea.

100% wanted to stay. Money was the issue but they were all on poor wages compared to down south and he only asked for a pretty minor increase and was told no. He wanted to stay big jock told him he could go then tried to talk him back into staying.

He had just had a great world cup and felt slight increase would be fair. Board baulked as they feared rest of team would ask as well.

Davie has an enormous emotional attachment to club and from what i understand team around then if he was kept and 3/4 others club would have gone onto firm european success.

Wages went up dramatically at Chelsea but if he was given slight increase he would have stayed.

Not wishing to derail or mention anything that would put anyone on a downer but has the board factor been mentioned, a large enough bid and anyone is for sale.
Have we ever sold a star player who didn't actually want to leave?

According to Sean Fallon Dalglish didn't want to leave.
He said that at a dinner I was at in 1991.

Up there with McGrory of Celtic or McGrory of Arsenal.
Thinking of this, if only Charlie Nicholas had the attitude and dedication of Kieran Tierney.
All things in context here, Nicholas was offered what can only be described as an insulting contract of £150 a week. And that was a four year deal! He increased his wages X10 when he left, he would have been insane to stay, his mistake was not going to Angield.
Basically that board dared him to leave.
Young Kieran doesn't have to deal with that kind of board, even their harshest critic has to concede they are nowhere near as bad as that lot.

Without knowing Tierney he seems a far level headed lad and i think our best prospect in a long long time. He is a tough tackler, great timing, positionally sound full back. Noises he makes seem to say board will need to drag him away from club.

Love his patter.

He is this era's Tommy Burns. The fan who became the player loved by the fans.

I look at KT and think I wish that had been me. We probably all do.

Celtic played in a pre-season tournament in Lansdowne Rd. in July 1997 and they stayed in the Golf Links Hotel in Portmarnock. For some reason my dad thought it would be a great idea to take my myself and my wee brother to meet the team. We sat down to have lunch and wait for the team and they happened to come in and have lunch next to us. Di Canio was the life and soul of the place. Reminded me of a class jester. I remember him with a bowl on his head messing with the rest of the squad. He seemed happy as Larry, you wouldn't have thought he was going anywhere or in dispute with the club. He was gone within days.

Nothing to do with the topic but my dad put me up to going over to chat to Davie Hay who he knew to be a friend of my uncle. He was sitting beside Wim and Murdo. I reluctantly shuffle over with my wee brother and blurt out that we're relatives of my uncle. Looks at us with complete contempt, says "Ok" and turns away. I think the old man had visions of us being introduced to the team whereas instead I made a tit of myself in front of the whole management team. To add insult to injury he ratted us to the hotel staff who told us to leave the team alone even though we had only spoken to Hay and had no intention of suffering further ignominy . To some he's one of the best midfielders they ever saw in the hoops. To others he's a respected manager of Love St. '85. He might even be noted by some as an excellent scout in the 90s. To me he's a miserable old carrot who left me hanging.

He was left back for Celtic. And Love Street was 1986.
