Haste ye back son. He's a throwback and a half. I can just imagine him kicking a can about his street at night, waiting for training to start the next morning.

There's a wee laddie in the '09 team I coach who's exactly the same. Skinniest legs you've ever seen, knobbly knees.....hard as nails!

“When you’re younger some people dream about playing in the English Premier League but I only dreamed about playing for Celtic. It was always a Celtic strip that I wore.”

FIRED-UP Kieran Tierney can’t wait to come in from the cold at Celtic.

The 19-year-old left-back has been counting the minutes to his top-team return since damaging ankle ligaments in training at the end of October.

Tierney — who also took the chance to have keyhole surgery on a niggling shoulder injury — has enjoyed going to games with family and friends again but admits it pales in comparison to being in the thick of the action.

He said: “I’ve been dying to get back. I’ve been working hard every day.

“I have loved watching the games. Celtic have been winning and so as long as that keeps happening I’m fine.

“I don’t think I’ve missed a game since I’ve been out. It’s been enjoyable, going and watching as a fan again with my friends and cousins, so I’ve been making the most of that and trying to be positive.

“I still go mad when we score. I’ve just tried to make the most of it and not be all doom and gloom.

“I have been recognised. At Fir Park it must have taken me about half an hour to walk from one door to another with all the requests for pictures but I don’t mind that at all. A couple of
people were saying ‘you’ll not get back in the team!’ but I just had to work hard and that’s what I’ve been doing.”

Tierney has a healthy perspective on his situation and knows this stint on the sidelines should be, ultimately, no more than a bump in the road.

It’s not that long since he wasn’t even a first-pick for the Hoops’ second-string, or when a broken leg stalled his progress.

Sheer tenacity took him from raw rookie to polished performer and the break has given him time to reflect on what has been a rapid rise to prominence.

He said: “This is the first injury I’ve had since I made my debut, and if anyone had said to me that I’d have to do my ligaments to play 55 games for Celtic then I’d have said ‘no bother’.

“There was a point a few years ago when we were all at school-leaving age and going full-time.

“Everyone was in contract talks. It was near the end of the school year and I wasn’t getting one. I hadn’t been told so I had to think about other options — even a job — but I got a contract in the end.

“It wasn’t the greatest but it was a contract with Celtic so I was always going to take it. I’ve worked hard every day since.

“It’s been brilliant for me, a dream.

“To have played 50 games, to play — and score, I’m claiming it! — in the Champions League, get called up to the international squad, everything was going so well.

“Injuries happen in football so you just have to deal with it.

“It’s been good to have a period to look back on everything. You can think about what you’ve achieved, what you’ve done.

“Obviously the end to 2016 wasn’t the best but the rest of the year was more than I could ever have hoped for. There’s a lot to look forward to in the year ahead.”

Tierney is convinced he’ll be ready to go when Celtic return from their warm-weather training camp in Dubai and he has no fears about putting his ankle or shoulder to the test.

He said: “I’m hoping to be back after the winter break. Dubai will be good for my fitness. You just need to be yourself. If you go in with fear or the feeling that you don’t want to tackle for
a couple of weeks then it’s just not going to work.

“You just need to go in hard and get all of your fears out of the way.

“It’s the same with my shoulder as it is for my ankle. I just need to go and get a shoulder challenge in. I’ve been doing that in rehab — pushing against a board. You need to be 100 per cent confident.

“I’m just buzzing to get back now. Even just getting out on the pitch at the training ground, I’ve been full of energy. I’m loving it.”

Tierney, who admitted he is flattered by talk he’s being tracked by some of Europe’s biggest clubs, backed boss Brendan Rodgers’ recent comments about the sacrifices young players will have to make if they want to follow the likes of Calvin Miller into the first-team.

He said: “Did I give Calvin any advice? Don’t do your ligaments! It’s brilliant the manager is giving more young guys a chance. It gives you such a boost to know that if you deserve it, the manager will see it.

“I saw he’d been talking about diet and stuff. He’s right.

“It’s a hard business coming through as a young boy, especially at a club that wants to win every game. You need to take your chance when you get it.

“When you’re younger some people dream about playing in the English Premier League but I only dreamed about playing for Celtic. It was always a Celtic strip that I wore.”

While much attention has justifiably focused on the impact of key signings Moussa Dembele and Scott Sinclair, Tierney believes the former Liverpool manager’s diligent one-to-one coaching has helped raise the game of the crop of players he inherited from Deila.

The rejuvenation of Stuart Armstrong has been the most spectacular success of Rodgers’ improvement work, but Tierney attests to some more subtle enhancements to his own game.

‘He’s been giving me tips and there are lots of aspects we’ve been working on,’ he continued. ‘My attacking game for a start — I’ve been more forward this season and I’ve been working on my dribbling, too.

‘People don’t see the hours those at the club have put in to get us where we are. The manager is first here in the morning and last away at night. He puts in a lot to set things up for us so we can just do our work on the pitch. He deserves a lot of credit.’
