I really want the lad to get a proper squad number. Call me old fashioned, but a first teamer playing with the number he was given as a green-behind-the-ears kid on his back just looks daft.

On the point about him playing midfield - he's got the right attitude to switch and he's got really solid technique, plus his energy and drive would be great in a midfield role.

I still think his best position is left back, but it wouldn't hurt him in the slightest to add a bit of positional versatility to his game.

I think he had the chance to change his number a few years ago :ponder: but wanted to keep #63, in tribute to Big Tam?

I've been wrong before though

Seen a lot of new hoops with Tierney 63 printed on them, they’ll be gutted if he ends up wearing number 3 this season.
Was at the young hoops day at Barrowfield last week, amazing by the way, its run by the superstore and I got speaking to the superstore manager.

Asked him about name and number on the back as most kids had Tierney 63

He reckoned that over 50% of printing is Tierney 63 the next closest would be Brown and then in his opinion/experience Griff.

I wonder how many weans have been advised to go for them as a safety option

“Can I get Dembele on the back?”

“What if he leaves though? - you’ll get your money’s worth out someone like KT, Brown or Griffiths” :ph43r:

Yes

Gemmell apparently scored 63 goals for Celtic (although our own wiki has it as 69  ). I'm sure I heard an interview with Kieran, where he stated the 63 was in tribute to TG

Agree, he should be 3.

And, not saying he can't play midfield, but anytime we have a half decent defender there are calls for them to be shifted to midfield. There are plenty of class left backs who just played left back in their career.

Tierney as 3, Édouard as 7 and McGregor and Forrest getting something a bit more sensible would be good.

yeah was guna say seems like something of a trend in the sense that McGregor, forrest both wear their initial numbers. recent memory also recall liam Henderson, Dylan mcgeouch, aiden mcgeady, Darren odea all sticking w their numbers rather than changing so there is some precedent I guess

Others have changed, Celtic just don’t do it very much, feels like a promotion of sorts though.

To be fair, there was hardly much need to change Hendersons and McGeouchs numbers.
