Is he better than McGrain?

One of the funniest questions ever.
Must have been someone quite young.
Nope.

Huge reality check. You only have to go back two pages in this thread to find someone claiming he's a better left back than Mendy, who Man City spent £52 million on after he helped Monaco win the French title and reach the semi-finals of the Champions League last season. Folk were also comparing him favourably not so long ago with the Spurs full-backs who were being linked with £40 million plus transfers over the summer. Right now I'd settle for him playing as well as Izaguirre in these European games.

Mbappe had him on toast for the first half however after that he improved. Distribution at this level has to improve though

Thought he was left well exposed on the left at times - contrast with how PSG always seemed to have two or three covering Roberts. Overall, though, he was not at his best, or else not able to cope with the standard opposition.

Is he as good as Danny was at the same age would be a fairer question.

Can he become as good as Danny became is a more fantastic question, but not beyond the realms of possibility.

I agree. Massive over-correction. He is a promising young player making his way in the game. No more no less.

Mbappe was electric last night. Tough shift for any left back, particularly with Alves bombing on with little protection from Sinclair.

Not worse than the muppet who just basically blamed him for all the CL goals since he started.

Danny McGrain wasn't really playing much for the first team at Tierney's age.

I saw Danny McGrain get an absolute roasting off Jesper Olsen. It doesn't mean McGrain wasn't a world class player (and that doesn't mean I'm saying Tierney is a world class player).

Tierney may well go on to become a Celtic great, or a legend, or whatever. But if he had played the same amount of games for Celtic at 22 as McGrain had, some folk on here would be saying he'd never make it.

Danny was 22 before he became a regular starter so I suppose you could say Tierney is ahead at this stage but I find it difficult to compare players from different eras. Things have changed so much.

stop this. Honestly, this needs to stop now.

Danny McGrain was the best right back in world football, period.

Tierney is a decent prospect, who may go on to be a great player for Celtic or whoever, but to compare him with McGrain is utterly ridiculous.

Nah.

Since last night we've had a few saying he was poor last night ( he was ) and a few saying he has been poor on a number of occasions in Europe ( he has ).

Nothing overly critical about that.

And a few saying he was the least worse out of our defence. I don't worry about KT, there's more to worry about in our defence and midfield.

He had a difficult 30 minutes last night. He then kept a magnificent footballer relatively quiet for the rest and still offered going forward. He was the best of that back four last night.

He has a lot to learn at this level though.

The other issue is that Danny was tested as a defender domestically in a more competitive league. Tierney hardly does so it's harder to compete. Also, our team very rarely comes up against the calibre of players that we saw last night. Give the ball away in the SPFL and you know you'll get it back not long after losing it. The PSG players were half way up the park and bearing down on goal once we lost it last night. We don't get tested defensively and I think the adjustment to playing at this level is getting harder year on year.

That's hardly praise considering Ralson was making his 4th or something appearance for the club and Lustig was played out of position. I'd argue there wasn't much praise to offer any of the defenders. My initial point was that while folk are baw-deep in criticism for other players there are certain players we aren't really objective with.

Like I said in Astana away he was very poor and I don't generally get too critical of our players.

As mentioned above he was being rated in the 20-30 million pound bracket in the summer by some. I just think we need to be more cautious about where we rank our players. Last night, like previous European performances, was a reality check for the lad. FWIW he's one of the players you would back to learn from that performance.

In addition.

At 2nd goal after the cross goes in he's slow to react. Stands watching the play before realising the ball is coming back across goals.

At 4th goal he's tucked in tight in the box rather than perhaps going out to prevent the cross and help Sinclair.

At the 5th goal Cavani gets into the gap between him and Jozo.

These are all points I'm sure will be highlighted when the team gets together to go through the performance.
