I always liked him. Even reminded me of Doug Leash in his early days. I am so glad he is starting to show some of what he is capable. Saturday could well be the day he really makes his mark. Here's hoping.
Certainly has the pedigree.
 You're a chum for life.

No he doesn't. Nothing like Burley. If Burley had played in the 4-2-3-1 era he wouldn't be behind the striker, afaik our recent games have been Armstrong's first run of games as a CM. Had a few games there over the course of last season and looked badly out of place.
We will agree to disagree.

Edit. I know Burley wouldn't be behind the striker. That's cause he's a 10 not an 8.
And Armstrong's a 10 not an 8:thumbsup:

That's exactly how he plays.

He's playing as a number 8 just now and has been for most of this season. He doesn't look badly out of place there anymore.

He's barely played as a 10 all season, and isn't now.

Indeed he only played as a ten when coming off the bench as a direct replacement for Rogic when Bitton was still in the team and holding alongside Brown. Since he's replaced Bitton in the starting lineup the midfield alignment has changed from 2-1 to 1-2 with Brown deeper on his own and Armstrong and Rogic playing as a pair of 8s.

Our formation with him in the is really a 4-1-4-1 which is why the manager has been talking about our "front 5". He's not a number 8.

At the risk of playing 'who's who', here's a description of Frank Lampard's playing style from Wikipedia:

Quote:

Lampard is an all-round and versatile box-to-box player, who is capable of playing anywhere in midfield; he has been deployed as a central midfielder, as an attacking midfielder, as a defensive midfielder, and even as a supporting striker on occasion. A hard-working player with stamina and an ability to read the game, Lampard is also capable of functioning creatively, due to his technique, vision, and passing range. In addition to his creative and defensive midfield roles, Lampard also possesses a keen eye for goal, due to his ability to make attacking runs, and his accurate, powerful shot from distance. These attributes enabled him to maintain a prolific goalscoring record throughout his career, despite his deep playing position. Lampard is also an accurate set-piece and penalty kick taker.

Some might disagree, but I think in the main that's a fairly accurate comparison to make in terms of where Armstrong is (obviously not in terms of ability).

I think in Celtic circles, the Burley comparison is a decent one, though Burley was less cultured and more tenacious (though had delusions of grandeur at times). I can also see why some have cited Petrov, but again Stan was more powerful and robust than Armstrong in the way that he played. There's probably someone we have all missed in this comparison game (Liam Miller?) but I'm sticking my neck out for the Scottish Lampard

Oh no thats thrown up the possibility that he is now a '9'

In all fairness he does strike me as more a '8' than a '10' if we are getting in to figures but unlike stan and burley he just isn't as good defensively or got a hold of games by the scruff of the neck, although i am seeing vast improvement in his game.

He certainly has the engine for box to box and the way he is playing has made Browns game easier and hence the team is just a dream to watch again.

Improve his first touch, cut out the stay passes and tighten up defensively and we have got ourselves a world class midfielder and the beautiful thing is with all his improvement i can see Bendan getting even more from him. He's an intelligent guy and just coming in to the best years of his football life so why not.

To my eye, we're now playing more of this midfield 3:

Brown
Rogic Armstrong

This gives Rogic and Armstrong space to run into while keeping a solid base of Broony behind them. Depending on how the opposition are pressing they both move forward into channels together (Rogic likes coming in off the wing for a shot while Armstrong prefers a more direct route) or one sits back looking to provide an arriving option outside of the box which moves either the opposition's DM or CM in having to track him. This pushes their line back and allows Broony to move into that space and recycle position from inside their half/third making it even less likely they'll be able to break if they block a pass.

Armstrong has hints of both the tactical approach of a box to box and a more traditional attacking midfielder which is why he's becoming so hard for opposing teams to deal with. Now that he's been given a more open role by BR and had his confidence mended I think we're really starting to see a player.
