Stuart Armstrong signs for Southampton on a four-year deal
Stuart Armstrong signs for Southampton on a four-year deal
By: Newsroom Staff on 26 Jun, 2018 17:31

MIDFIELDER Stuart Armstrong has joined Southampton on a four-year deal after three-and-a-half highly successful and impressive years at Celtic Park. The 26-year-old Scottish internationalist moves to the English Premier League side and will link up with his new team-mates when they resume pre-season training.

Armstrong joined Celtic in February 2015, along with Gary Mackay-Steven, on a transfer deadline day move from Dundee United, and both players scored on their Celtic debuts, netting in a 3-0 victory over Partick Thistle at Firhill.

In helping the Hoops win the league title, he made 17 appearances, and also scored on a memorable night at Paradise as Celtic drew 3-3 with Inter Milan at home in the UEFA Europa League.

The following season he was a regular in the starting XI, making a total of 39 appearances and scoring two goals as the Hoops once again lifted the league title, their second under Ronny Deila.

Armstrong played his part in the Invincibles' treble-winning season under Brendan Rodgers, making 47 appearances and scoring 17 goals, including Celtic’s final goal in the 5-1 demolition derby in what was Brendan Rodgers’ first Glasgow derby against Rangers. Last season he made 41 appearances as the Hoops clinched the Double Treble, scoring five goals.

And if that wasn’t impressive enough, he was the subject of a brilliant fans’ song, which paid tribute to his football ability and his impressive hair style!

In total, Stuart Armstrong made 144 appearances for Celtic, scoring 28 goals. He won four Premiership titles, two Scottish Cups and two League Cups while also helping the Hoops reach the group stages of the UEFA Champions League for the past two seasons and, last year, progressing on to the last 32 of the UEFA Europa League.

Everyone at Celtic would like to thank Stuart for his fantastic contribution to the success the club has enjoyed during his time here, and we want to wish him every success in the future with Southampton.
I’ll definitely buy the away kit on the back of that statement.

I don't understand the angst tbh.

We bought a promising you Scottish player and developed him.

His development has plateaued for whatever reason.

He fancies a crack down south.

He didn't let his contract run down.

There will be very few 'celts for life' in the future

I'd say that with the benefit of hindsight, considering what he has brought both on and off the pitch (money), we can be very pleased with the outcome of the deal.

Good luck Stu, I hope you do well.

Can't argue with any of that. Best of luck Stuart.

Good luck to him.... But to me, once they're gone... They're gone. We did well moving him on at this point.

7m basically covers The French Eddie.

No doubt the media will bill this as Celtic being weaker no Roberts, Armstrong gone and signing a player we already had.

We strengthened immediately when we released Ciftci.

7 million for Armstrong on last year of contract, 9 million for Eduard. The English market truly is bonkers.

There isn't really any angst though. Emotions are running anywhere between 4 and 6 on the GAF scale. Sums him up quite nicely I think.

Thought he was excellent, and maybe he hasn't "plateaued". Definitely would be good for us if he does well in the EPL. Adieu Stu.

I mean, as it stands is this incorrect? I think Eddy on a permanent definitely boosts the value of the squad but on the playing side we're down two important players whose absences were definitely felt at times during several shampooey home draws last season.

Thankfully, there's plenty time in the window yet. I have faith the manager and club won't squander what really is a vital window for us and we'll come out of it a good deal stronger

He’s a right good player. Brought something none of our other midfield men did with his powerful running in behind....but not a first pick. Great money for him.

Lost a good player but worse...a great song

Great player, I don't understand the hate. Hope he does well for the Saints, hands us a hefty sign on fee when he (inevitably) goes to Liverpool and is a great servant for Scotland in the coming years. I love seeing Scottish players do well, especially when they came through this club.

I’m not bothered about him going, I’d have happily punted him last pre season. Good luck to him though.
£7m is a great deal for us, I just hope its re-invested in the team.
