I agree and I, along with a lot of folk, had high expectations for the boy but it looks like this is having a detrimental effect on him. He has the abilty but maybe not he shoulders to carry the load. Off topic, but I used to room with Mehmet Scholl when I was playing. Top lad and still a very good friend

I guess some players just cannot handle the step up but I would still like to see if we can make something of the lad playing in his right position and being coached properly. Interesting about you knowing Scholl. Could be a tremendous influence on a game and held in very high regard by the Bayern fans. Did you meet him before his Bayern days? |

Needs to spend some time sat on the bench, we need to start giving other players a chance to show what they can do given a chance. Continuing to play Armstrong in this position when he's clearly off the boil isn't going to get him or us anywhere. Same could be say for Johansen and GMS, we can't force them to start playing well. |

Here's another player there was something of a consensus for us to spend money on, if you are willing to go back and look at the threads. Plenty wailing when it looked like we might not stump up the fee during January 2015. Then come 1 February, all was apparently right with the world, albeit for a brief time. Plenty people appear to have completely misunderstood where he spent the majority of his time playing for Dundee United, and plenty apparently unaware of the consistency issues he had there, although not to the same extent as Mackay-Steven. I can only imagine that people didn't ever watch him at DUFC, and/or took no notice when we played against them. From what I've seen from Armstrong, he's about as technically adept a player as we have. Faint praise really, as it's not that long a list. As in, he's a stronger candidate to get the ball under control under pressure and make an accurate pass to a player playing in the same colour of jersey than most in the squad. He's also been a lot better out wide over the piece than the KDS 'Lets Get Him Playing in Central Midfield For Absolutely No Apparent Reason Society' would give him credit for. The issue with Armstrong is that he doesn't appear to have the character to step up for a team that needs to win most weeks. Players that even when not playing particularly well, can be relied upon to put in a shift and not let the side down. He partly did that at the weekend, because his performance was not great at all, but he worked a great bit of space out wide, delivered a great cross for an assist. As I've said before, he may develop that quality over time. I think to an extent he is treated a little unfairly because I do think the ability is there, and he's now becoming among the first for the ire even when its not really called for. |

I don't think he's crumbled under the pressure of playing for Celtic. This isn't the Martin O'Neill era Celtic we're talking about here. I think he's just terribly off form along with a worrying amount of others in the side and instead of dropping him and giving others a chance we're forcing him to play through it. I still don't think he's a left winger. Don't care if he played there for United. It's clear that he isn't. |

We don't play him as a winger. The job of a conventional winger is to get to the byline and get crosses in. That's clearly not a trait of this Celtic team when guys like Armstrong or Allan are playing this position. Plenty players play the wide position in a three behind a main striker that are never referred to as wingers. That's because they're not. |

I apologise. I don't think he's a wide midfielder. I think he's a player suited to the centre of the park. |

He's not a winger. He did play the majority of Utd games on the left side of midfield with some games centrally. The few times I saw him he looked more effective centrally. |

Armstrong is a good player. His current form, minor blip against St Johnstone apart, is pish. He needs put on the bench for his own sake. It makes you wonder if Deila plays both him & GMS because he can trust them, not to put in performances, but to actually try. |

The position Armstrong has been played in is not the problem. Firstly, he doesn't play as a left-winger. His starting position is left but he comes inside the majority of the time and links with the rest of the midfielders. We've had countless examples of players in our own team that have been seen as 'central' players but have thrived out 'wide'. Nakamura didn't do too badly out there. Petrov played some of his best football for us out there. Scott Brown moving right to accommodate Ledley and Wanyama and bring some steel into our midfield was the making of Lennon's team. Of course none of these players actually played as wingers so the constant whine that 'Armstrong isn't a winger' is as futile as screaming that 4-4-2 will be the end of all our problems. The problem with Armstrong is he just isn't good enough. He's been a massive disappointment. |

Correct. They've both been pretty crap, but at the moment I'd drop Armstrong before GMS. Ideally they'd both be out the team, though. |

Yes it was at youth level but we are still good friends. He was a tremendous player and very underrated. You could tell even back then that he was a special talent. |

Interesting read from press conference with him in the Sun today about him being primarily a centre midfielder, struggling to cope with the mentality required to play for Celtic and the new fitness screening they are doing. |
