He's a good player and offers something different with his industry and scoring. Similarly, our other midfielders Rogic, McGregor, Ntcham, Brown etc....all offer something different to the team.

The injuries this season of multiple players was significant and has played a strong role in our performance in Europe and domestically where we scored fewer goals and took less points.

Our strength is in our diversity of the squad.

If he was to leave, we need to bring in another midfield player that can break the lines and score goals. This summer is the time to resolve this.

I agree with that.

Similar to Griffiths, he’s an important player without being first choice and we’d struggle to replace what he offers without spending a decent fee.

Good player but not that good we should be his last option if he can't get a sniff at a lower division EPL side.
This. All day long

Did fine without him breaking lines and scoring goals this year. Was it four or five he managed all in?

Like your Girffiths Grenade thrown in...let the games begin in the Stuart Armstrong thread.

Given how many games we didn't score a goal in, I'd suggest we missed him (and an on-form Sinclair)

There's no doubt that Arsmtrong is a useful player to have around. I'd be delighted to keep him.

Can be a useful player to have around.

He's made 40 odd appearances this year.

Ha!

Really wasn’t meant like that. Griffiths is another prominent player we have who isn’t really close to being first choice but remains an important player for us by offering something different to what the first choice players do. I think it’s a good comparison with Armstrong.

Anyway, unless you (not you specifically) are a effing idiot, there surely isn’t even a Dembele/Griffiths debate to be had these days.

This thread jumped about 115 pages in just over seven weeks in the period after the Scottish Cup final last year until the middle of August 2017, when he eventually signed a one year extension.

Since then, just 47 pages until the end of this season.

The whole thing felt like a bit of an unnecessary sideshow. I like Armstrong and hope he stays, and I know it is still early on but I hope whatever happens, happens early this time.

Last summer I'd have been gutted to lose him, but he's nowhere near as good as the Big Strong Ntcham. Not fussed either way this time around.

Agree with you the Olly Boys form has definetly had an affect on my thinking about him but dont think it can be disputed that him in midfield does bring an energy and his play and running suits our system and team set up.

Last year was a marker for me the fact he only signed for 2 years after all the palava all fecking summer.

He will go I think but hope Im wrong.

a good player to have around but just have feeling he's a bit like simon donnelly back in the day and fergus's quote about all the stars who never were or such like

he should read mcgregor's interview in herald and get a grip

he was really badly advised last summer and no doubt will be again

Made his ambitions very clear last summer, one more summer and he's off to the big lights of the EPL. All the best Stuart, hopefully we get a few million for him

Hasn't worked out particularly well for the club either. He'll bring in a significantly reduced sum than he would have last summer.

Thought we were in a another matinee on that subject!

I like Armstrong and football can be funny in the sense of CalMAc, Olly get injured or dare I say it Christie getting a chance & then doing the buisness next season...numerous things could occur as we all know.

Armstong might not be first choice but these things change as we already see with Mcgregors perefomance levels this season & now pretty much a stick on to start all games...or Sinclair ffalling of a cliff...

If he was sold I would not worry too much about finding a replacement. Ntcham, McGregor, Brown with Kouassi and Bitton as cover is good enough for me. Would be much more concerned with finding a new centre half and winger.

Edit to also mention Rogic
Although those players have other qualities, none of them have as much energy as Armstrong and that would be my main concern if he were to go. We require a player like Armstrong to break the lines against teams that sit in. If he goes a similar player should be signed.
McGregor is versatile enough to make those runs and open up space if that’s what Rodgers wants him to do. After the season those midfielders had its difficult to say we need to go out and replace someone who was largely a substitute (through no fault of his own, granted) when there are far more immediate needs.

If he wants to go, let him go. Wouldn’t be too bothered by it, certainly wouldn’t neglect getting a defender and winger in the door.
McGregor brings a lot of energy but I don’t think he is as powerful a runner as Armstrong is.

It’s a team game, a good bench is required. We could have done with him at times when we were struggling to break down St Johnstone and the likes when he was injured.

Agree with your last sentiment but if he does go, He’d need replaced with someone similar imo.

Not good enough for Europe, that goal against Inter a few weeks after he signed is the only real contribution he's made. Doesn't want to commit himself either. Punt.

There's definitely room in the squad for a player like him, or like the 2016/17 version of him anyway. We don't have anyone else that you'd call a box-to-box midfielder really (although what I saw of Kouassi's performance in Broony's testimonial made me wonder if he could develop in that direction rather than being more defensively minded).

If he wants to sign a new contract I have no problem with that, but at the same time I won't lose any sleep if he moves.

I loved him last season (or last last season I suppose) and was disappointed in what we saw from him this year. If there is a way to get him back to the player he was we'd be daft to let him go. If his head isn't in it then I couldn't care less where he was punted to.

He had a good half season against SPL teams. Big deal. I really liked him till he started messing us about, but I'm bitter now. Ultimately, he's useless against good teams, as proven in Europe, and his attitude stinks. Also didn't know how many stars are on the American flag in the CelticTV quiz, so clearly not the bright young man he's painted to be.
