I honestly don't see a problem with this. Did people expect him to sign a new 5 year deal or something?

Don't think so. 3 years would have been sufficient. A 1 year extension doesn't really settle anything as the transfer/contract situation will still be in his mind and the mind of the supports this year. Think we'll look to cash in during the January window.
Celtic have strengthened our hand. If the boy goes now, so be it. Most of us were resigned to losing him for eff all.

Now, we've a good player - re-focused hopefully - for the long season ahead. We've still got things to win at home. We'll need a squad of players to do that.

We can rotate now, all with players we know how to play system.

If you were resigned to losing him for eff all then a 1 year extension merely puts that eff all point to next summer. i.e if you're actually concerned about losing him for eff all you'd probably need to sell him in January. Not really sure that squares up with 'we've got a good player for the long season ahead'. It's given the club a bit more flexibility, but ultimately it's not really changing much.

There's an argument for saying if you're going to lose him, it would be better to lose him this year over next summer, because next summer we're probably looking at a couple of major departures.

Pleased that he has signed, even if it is just for an extra season. There won't be many players like Scott Brown who come here, and end up not wanting to move on, so it's to be expected that Armstrong will leave at some point. This deal just puts us in a slightly better negotiating position for when that day comes.

Better than nothing. Kicks the issue into the long grass for a bit. Now it's up to him to show he can continue to improve and hold down a starting place. Looks to me that he might not get it all the way he wants given the new kinds that are on the block. If he ends up a squad player instead of an automatic first team pick he is a very decent option to have.

Now let's get the Roberts situation resolved one way or another (I'm not that bothered which way) and the rest of transfer business done. Adter that we can settle down to a cracking season domestically and an improved scenario in Europe.

Getting on a bit

Lawwell has given him a bit of what he was looking for (wage rise). Armstrong has given us a bit of what we wanted (longer deal).
As quite a few have mentioned it's nothing more than a compromise to get it 'out the way'.

I'm disappointed with that as I though there was a chance of commitment from Armstrong to further develop under Brendan Rodgers who himself committed to a 4 year deal not so long ago. Hopefully we will get a decent amount for his transfer within the next 6/12 months.

Pleased he's staying first and foremost.

The whole thing has left a bit of bad taste in the mouth. He'll get a bit more money for the next year. I think most folk (manager, club and fans) have now come to terms with the fact that he wants to move on in the not too distant future. That's going to impact on his playing time. We have a lot of strength in depth in midfield and I think BR will focus his attention on other guys in that group.

I'm sure he won't cut off his nose to spite himself. Armstrong will be used whenever he's needed and BR feels he can do a job (Rosenborg away, the last two games sub appearances as examples). However, he's probably going to be on the sidelines a lot too (like Hearts opener and Astana game).

He can focus his attention on getting back on form in the immediate future. I just think a lot of the goodwill towards him and his development will dissipate

Brendan said, sign a contract or your career is dead

His hair if fine, but his agent is a swine.

With armstrong going for a shorter deal mean he really needs to get back to last seasons form if hes wanting these EPL wages.

Very rare to see such negative reaction over a Good player signing a contract extension  TBH I'm amazed he signed it, I've always felt he wanted to experience a diff league. Suspect we'll sell next summer but at least the balls in our court now.

Glad he's staying for another season anyway. I agree entirely with BR's assessment that he is a "vital" member of the squad. We are so much the better retaining him for the season. He has so much quality in his game and can score great goals, important goals.
If we can get PR back - or another player of the same quality - for another season I think we'll all be entitled to dream big about what Celtic might achieve this season.

Basically a one year extension, with what sounds like a one year option that has to be agreed by both parties.

They can spin it as a two year deal because no doubt he is getting improved terms right away.

Not really much to shout about, but obviously better than him speaking to clubs about a Bosman in January.

Not sure this will help him get regular football at us this season, although if he shows form like last year, that will be the biggest driver.

When Kouassi is fit, all our midfielders face a stiff test to be seen as first on the team sheet, Brown possibly aside. I think the good thing with our options in there now mean that there is not as much need as before to pile Brown into near enough every league game if fit.

It seems like the point the manager was making to him was that signing a new deal would do nothing to prevent him getting his move ultimately. If EPL clubs really want to sign him, they'll pay the fee.

A pleasant surprise this morning, even if it is probably just a single season more.

I want the squad loaded for this campaign. It's not a state we can sustain all the time, having genuine quality that can't be assured a place, but if there was ever a season to risk it... this feels like it could be that season.

Very surprised. As the saga dragged on, I was certain he was offski. Almost certain champions league qualification playing a huge part? The timing is very suspect  either way, I'm delighted. You made the right choice Stu!

Sounds to me like he is still for the off,but he gets a pay rise and the club will get a bit more leeway with the fee.
