The fishal announcement said until "at least" 2019, so presumably there's an option of at least one more year based on certain criteria being met. Would be interesting to know what those criteria are.
Aye, I wondered about the strange wording of the tweet. Seemed ambiguous.

It'll be on agreement of both parties, so meaningless effectively.

This isn't quite the same as the Petrov deal, as Stan was an automatic first choice pick whereas Armstrong isn't in that position.

He clearly fancies a move to England in the not too distant future, but he'll know that the difference between a move to a Championship team and a move to an EPL team (let alone a reasonably decent, established EPL team) will be his performance this season.

Given that there's real competition for a place in any of our midfield positions this year, hopefully that will see him working really hard to make himself a regular starter for us. We get the benefit of him being a very good player, he gets the benefit of not fading into obscurity.
Good point(s).

A few (including myself) thought it would be longer but as you say he fancies down south quite clearly. Get 12 months out of him then punt and thats seems to be club/Stuarts thoughts to.

So essentially this deal takes him to the length of contract that Mackay-Steven signed when he joined at the same time as Armstrong?

Guy obviously not that interested in staying
Which he wasn't when he originally joined us.

At least we'll get money for him.

I've always thought he'd be targeting Germany as opposed to England.

Him and his agent (PFA Scotland) have essentially got the contract they wanted (and one that Lawell was refusing to offer until now).

I expect him to be gone in January or Summer 2018. We'll get more money for him in January than Summer. I don't expect him to sign another contract.

I honestly don't see a problem with this. Did people expect him to sign a new 5 year deal or something?

Exactly. Utterly bizarre reaction to this.

We'll now make decent money from a player who doesn't see his long term future with us. Int he mean time he's all signed up and can carry on playing and hopefully get back to his form of last season.
Well, I'm happy with it, its likely another full year of him and Moussa, as good an outcome as I wouldve expected a couple of months ago.

doesn't serve his interests at all unless he's negotiated a big slice of upside

improves our position a bit (dependent on upside split)

but really a waste of everyone's time - he needs to change his agent

how is it meaningless? if there's mutual agreement between the the player and the club then the extension clause, on current or agreed new terms, is activated, meaning protracted summer negotiations like this year.

Oh well. At least we'll get some cash when he goes. But unless he refinds his form it may not be as much as we might have hoped.

He's not 21, he's 25 - he's got a couple of contracts left in him. He perhaps knows that even with annual CL participation for the next four years, he's not going to ever earn more than £25k-30k with us. Maybe he fancies a bigger pond, or abroad? Who could begrudge him that if he gives us four years and leaves for decent money?

The make-up of the midfield now might make things tricky, though. Perhaps Brown will be rested more this season...?

Suspect he's going to find it difficult to get a game in the biggest matches this season. Ntcham's power and Rogic's talent will see them as first choice alongside Brown for the Champions League games. Armstrong will get plenty of game time domestically but could find himself warming the bench more often than not for the crunch games.

Id punt now or in January, the length of the contract highlights that he doesnt see his future with us which is fine but a 2 year contract puts us in the same position next summer that we are in now, wondering how much we can get for a player on the last 12 months of his contract. Had a storming 6 months last season, would like it to continue but if he doesnt I believe that we have the players there to fill the gap and take over comfortably.

Bit dissapointed with the way it turned out, what the difference of another year to the lad so the club gets more even if he is leaving next year.

I suppose this shows the player has most of the power in negotiations.
Will we see the same from Paddy?
Can he force his move to us, after his seemingly similar protracted negotiations?

Got him to sign, so job kinda done.

I hope he pushes on now, as he was fantastic late last season - as was Paddy.

It's meaningless because it's fairly obvious he has no intention staying in the long term. He'll be off in January; there's not a chance that PL will allow a similar scenario to play out next summer.

I could see him or Mcgregor starting the away games in Europe not Rogic

Well then we have him for the Champions League games and then we'll get more for him than we would have got yesterday.

It suits the club or they wouldn't have gone for it. I think Brendan ' s salvo at the agent had more than one target when he said it wasn't the biggest deal to sort out. Some heads needed banged together and it's done the trick.

I don't get it from Armstrongs point as well

Atm with is form he is behind Brown and Ntcham for the two midfield places with Kouassi pushing for a place when he becomes fit + McGregor being able to play there

He is also behind Rogic and McGregor for the attacking midfielder role atm

He is 6 months to a year from being in the situation where he got his head turned

Can't see where he fit in if BR wants to build a team unless he commits himself long term to the club, we just have to many players of his quality or better in the positions that he is best at, with a player half way out of the club, I can't see BR giving him a regular starting place - the best he can hope of is a place on the bench in most matches

If he wanted for BR to see that his head was back on right, he would have committed long term, worked hard to get back into the tea and showed BR that he was a player that he could count on

If a good offer comes in for him in this window(6m Swansea) I'd punt.

He has no intention of sticking around and I'd rather not upset our CL qualification campaign next season. We are most likely going to have to deal with a few departures next summer.

I know people don't want to hear it but some players will have been here for 3-5 years by the time next Summer rolls round. Most signed knowing they are using Celtic with CL participation as a stepping stone to bigger leagues. I'd expect a few to move on.
