This should have been sorted weeks ago -- stay or go, I no longer much care which. I like SA and wanted us to sign him but the situation should have been resolved earlier. He's a smart guy but not so much that he can see he's making a career-defining mistake, much like Liam Miller did. Pity.
It might well have been us insisting he stayed at least for the qualifiers. Not knowing his form would be as it is. Too late now, I think selling the week of the Astana game might be distracting. Unless wee Paddy arrives and nobody even notices him going.

For folk saying he was slack last night, he sold the late equaliser against England with a slack pass, it's nothing new in his game. Some on here would have you believe he's Xavi, he's had 6 good months in 3 years. No guarantee he can build on it.

There was talk we had offered to double his wages but that would only bring his wage to around 15k per week. Southampton were alleged to be prepared to offer him around 45k per week.

Well, if true, it's a no-brainer!

How?

We've offered him a new deal and he's not accepted it. We could withdraw the offer (or it may have expired) but unless a club makes an offer to buy him, we'd be in the same situation.

I think most people want Armstrong to (1) stay and (2) regain his form. There's nothing else the club can do to make that happen unless we improve the offer to a level he will accept (assuming that the issue is over money and the acceptable salary is within reason).

As the club, we have to let this play out. Trying to force a sale at this point weakens our position as the buying club knows we are pushing for it and tries to push down the price.

Quoting limited to 3 levels deep
All footballers are mercenaries just as a lot clubs will dump a player as soon as it doesnt suit to keep them.
While it would be better if Armstrong signed a new contract with us I just don't get the anger against him for doing nothing wrong. The guy signed a contract to play for Celtic for three and a half years and at this stage it looks like he is honouring that contract as best be can. Yes the speculation and uncertainty is clearly getting to him but ffs he is not out mouthing 'my Celtic hell' to the media or going on strike etc.
Maybe I have just seen too many players at Celtic over the years who messed the club about in order to break contracts early, including Stan petrov, but I cannot see what the problem is when a player just does what he agreed to do.
All footballers are mercenaries.
No, many do the right thing by the club that developed them and gave them an opportunity.
Yes look after your own interests but its not a one way street.

While it would be better if Armstrong signed a new contract with us I just don't get the anger against him for doing nothing wrong.
Stuart Armstrong is not recognising what Celtic and BR have done for him.
Celtic are acting both in the interests of the player (he could get a much better move in a few years) and the club in their current stance.
Armstrong is currently sticking 2 fingers up to that.

The guy signed a contract to play for Celtic for three and a half years and at this stage it looks like he is honouring that contract as best be can.
No he is not. He is currently a liability to the team due to his state of mind.

...who messed the club about in order to break contracts early, including Stan petrov....
No. Petrov signed a new contract and subsequently got the move he desired. He left Celtic an even better player, with everyone's best wishes, and a healthy transfer fee for the club.
Petrov did the right thing (in the same circumstance as Armstrong now) which is one of the reasons he is such a favourite.
I really shouldn't respond but I can't help it.

Ok one I will give you is that there some footballers who aren't mercenaries. However they are very rare and get rarer every year.

Where or when has Stuart Armstrong sticking two fingers up to anybody? One of my points is that he has not done anything remotely like that - quite the opposite he has not said or done anything at all to draw the criticism. As for regards him failing to recognise what has been done for him are you saying that he should be so grateful for Celtic playing him he should just sign a new contract regardless of what is in it? Really? And for your point that Celtic are acting in the interests of the player what facts do you have to even begin to back that up?

I would certainly agree that he is a liability to the team at the minute but I see no lack of effort there. We seen under Ronny that when Armstrong isn't content his form collapses - I am sure if he could avoid that he would. Some players can play well regardless of off field matters - Armstrong doesnt seem able to.

As for Petrov doing the right thing then if you think signing a new contract and then behaving like a spoilt brat six months later on flag day as part of his actions that summer to engineer a move is the right thing then good luck to you. To me that was sticking two fingers up to Celtic. I still remember Petrov fondly for what he did over his time at Celtic though.

I thought that Armstrong was clever enough to see what he can get by playing for us vs for a club like Southampton. He is never going to get an offer from a top 5 in England where he will be a regular player. So he won't win anything down there, most likely his team will battle to win once or twice a month, but hey the money are better

But there will not be more medals for him unless his club are relegated and win their way back into the EPL in that case there will be a Championship bling on his wall, and the Championship is the closest he by name will get to the Champions League.

No more CL nights facing the best in Europe, no more playing in front of 50/60.000 at home matches. No more being a part of a winning culture

If he goes he will be replaced but he won't find a club in England that will replaced what he would gain by staying. If clubs like Dort mund, Schalke etc were knocking I could understand him but Southampton? I don’t get it.

I wish he'd make up his mind so we don't just get another 20 pages of the same arguments over and over.

I'd be surprised if the negotiations haven't finished and both parties know the outcome. Celtic would rather have him off the premises than running down his contract and putting in half-hearted performances.

"It just needs to be resolved one way or the other because it has affected him, I can see it in him. He's a good guy, he was at the top of his game for 6 months last season and he did extremely well. He doesn't have the confidence at the moment, and certainly the contract situation is playing a huge part in that. So we're hoping that he can get it resolved one way or the other so that we can see the Stuart Armstrong that performed very well for a lot of last season."

Really sounds like he's for the off, going by that. It's a real shame, because I like him a lot. But if an employee wants to do something different then what can you do?

Wouldn't surprise me to find out he was another Telfer.

Not really bothered about football, just a career to make as much money as possible as he has a talent for it.

Never has and never will be a Celtic fan. To expect any less than what is the best for him is just a waste of time. Punt!!!

Stuart Armstrong wants to stay at Celtic despite the protracted saga of his unresolved contract talks, Brendan Rodgers said on Saturday night. The Scotland midfielder has attracted the attention of several English clubs, with Southampton reportedly prepared to make a £3 million bid, but the Hoops manager believes the 25-year-old will not regain the form which made him a standout in midfield last season until the negotiations are settled.

“You can see it in him,” Rodgers said. He’s a very conscientious boy, Stuart. He’s not one of these boys who can just play and not think and worry.

“I genuinely think he wants to be here at Celtic. He just wants it resolved and he probably wanted it resolved six, seven months ago. For whatever reason, it hasn’t.

“It has affected him. I think for him, because he’s a great lad and I love and enjoy working with him, it’s starting to take its toll on him a wee bit.

“Hopefully we can get that resolved and he can settle down again and find that stability and find that form he was in for about seven months of last season.”

Why would Brendan Rodgers be talking to Roddy Forsyth on a Saturday night?
