Well why not, you're already open to low offers on our players by accepting £3 million for Armstrong. In fact why not just tell Southampton they only need to offer £1.5 million?

Just for a bit of contrast here, Andy Yiadom formerly of the mighty Barnet and Barnsley has signed for Huddersfield for £3 million because he was on the last year of his contract. Yet people on here think we as a Champions League club should be selling one of our best players to a Premiership club who are effing MINTED for the same figure because we might not get anything?

Naw.
Sums it up perfectly. Tell them tgtf
The reality here is that we are not related to as a "CL club" (whatever that means), we are an SPFL club and like clubs in Europes smaller leagues we get hit by the small league tax when it comes to a lot of transfer dealing, especially for someone with Armstrongs track record. That's the reality. You might not like it but that's how it is, that's the market we are dealing in. It's one of the reasons we put in the sell on clause with VvD.

Keep Armstrong? Fine and then we'll have to go out next Summer and buy someone to replace him with three or four million quid of our own money. Great planning right there.

Really? How come we sold our first pick CB for 2 million quid and a couple or three years later sold his replacement for almost seven times that amount??
Because one wasn't particularly good and the other is potentially world class. It's not exactly a like for like comparison is it?

You made a case for Armstrongs sale diminishing what we might get for Dembele FFS.

One is potentially world class, one clearly is not.

You're right, Armstrong is not potentially world class - but he is potentially excellent.

And yes, I do believe selling him for a derisory sum would negatively affect the value of the rest of our players.

Your logic is all over the place here mate.

And seriously, do you think Armstrong is more of a first choice in the team than Tierney or Sinclair?

Given the prevailing outlook is to stuff him in the youth team, it's effin Malcolm Allison style of management FFS
I'm trying to think of a serious, respected club that does this sort of thing these days.
The Rang....

Oh aye, serious and respected? not many unless its a VVD at Southampton situation.

Spartak did it to Aiden.
Bit of sabre rattling, they (wisely) punted him weeks later.

You said it sends a message. I just demonstrated that it doesn't send anything of the sort. What we sell Armstrong for will have zero bearing on what we might ask for Tierney, Dembele or anyone else in our squad.

Is there any time in all of this that you might consider the number being mooted is in fact his value at this point of his career and contract?

FWIW I think it's just how things panned out for us. No one would have blinked if we had released him last season let alone sold him. That he went on to have probably the best season of his entire career is the risk you take as a club. We decided to wait, given how he had performed to that point. It backfired. There's no plugging that hole now.

If he had two or three years left on his contract as one of our top earners, he is, IMO an 8-10 million quid player for us. That he is in the last year of his less than glamorous deal shrinks that number considerably. I'd hold out for 5 million quid for him now but if, on the last day of the window, the only offer we have is 3 mill from one club, we take it and move on.

Yup, no point in having him around if we have Broony, McGregor, Ntcham, Eboue and Bitton for two positions plus Ajer and even Henderson if there is a crisis.

We might be glad to have the extra 3mil in Jan if Rodgers feels the need to strengthen then.

This article is an interesting take - the midfield is probably the strongest area and would cope if Armstrong departs. Rogic, McGregor, Ntcham, Kouassi all younger than him. With Brown, that is a strong group to choose from.

It may actually make long term sense if extra money can come in now and put it towards having a similar depth of options in other areas on the pitch. Selling Armstrong would be a little disappointing but all things considered, one can see the logic.

I'd rather keep him.
So would I.

£3 million is a bit of a wind up.

He hasn't got half the leverage he had 2 months ago.

Pish in his big show match vs England. Pish since our season started. New centre mid hitting the ground running and McGregor being very good vs Hearts and Rosenborg. Rightfully out of the side.

Punt him and put the money towards securing a better, more needed player.

It would appear it might be best for all concerned for the club to sell him and move on.

He needs to get his head right. Go away and sort everything out - if he's still here at the end of the month then good and if he isn't then we move on. He will cost us big time if he puts any more performances in like that.
