It would be great to have him for longer, but I'm excited enough by the prospect of Ntcham, Eboue and Benyu to think that it won't be that much of a loss overall.

I actually don't mind the idea of him leaving if he was to have an amazing season and increase his value/get bigger clubs interested.
The knock on effect for Scottish football would be huge.

Aye, until he blows it and ends up on loan to Aberdeen by next Christmas.

Remy is 100% correct. If he isn't going to sign he should be sold, quickly. And if £3m is the best we can get so be it.

Onwards and upwards, hair or no hair.

Fair enough. I think it'll be lower than people think.
Wouldn't accept anything low like 3 million. Wouldn't play him either because his head wouldn't be in it. Might work against us this time but be sure when an epl club come calling again they know we ain't going to sell cheap. I'd stop playing him anyhow till he decides what he's doing

Armstrong probably has already decided what he's doing - sit tight for 6 months then handle his own transfer negotiations, probably securing a more lucrative deal than one which is encumbered with a transfer fee.

His problem would be if he turns out not to get that much game time between now and the end of the year, or is pish, or if he gets injured. His value would be severely affected by either scenario. Not to mention that he'd leave Celtic under something of a cloud and with little of the supporter goodwill he has enjoyed in these last few months. (Of course, that probably won't bother him at all.)

If it's true then what a effing insult of an offer :nono:

£3 million for one of our best players in today's market is a complete and utter joke.

Accept that offer and we'll condemn ourselves to lowball EPL offers on our players for the rest of time. We don't need the £3 million so tell them to GTF.

That's what I'd do.
Shove yer 3m.

Stick him in with the youths if he doesn't want to allow the club to make a decent wedge off him.

If an international midfielder with Champions league experience and an excellent goal record is worth so little then we are getting shafted.

Bench him and tell Southampton they can have the player for nowt next year.

Stuart Armstrong isn't good enough to leave for f all.
Agreed. Hard to stomach but there you go. We should have added an option. Lesson learned and move on.
Same here. Take the money if that's what's on offer. No reason to cut off noses to spite faces. We've got midfielders, he wants to go, and no one else is beating down the door to offer more for him.

Not sure that would achieve much.

He's benched so we lose the player's services, £3m and a year's worth of wages.

We sell him and we lose the player's services and gain £3m and his wages for the season.

I don't think it would set a future negotiation precedent other than the one which already exists - entering the last year of a player's contract, the club get screwed.

The figure would be far higher if he has 2 years to go. Everyone will know that we're settling the £3m because of the contract situation.

No new news there and little we can do about it. It is part of football now.

So, turn down £3m and pay Armstrong's wages for a season to teach everyone a lesson?

Eminently sensible.

Sends a signal to those willing to hold the club to ransom.

Sign a deal, he's then allowed to move at a price the club feels suitable.

His stock is high, it probably won't be if he doesn't get any game time.

Also tells Southampton that if they want a fresh player then come up with the goods.

Celtic hold the cards here, not Armstrong and not Southampton.

Have a wee look at what Championship players are going for under the same circumstances, and then try and say with a straight face again that £3 million for one of our best players is good enough.

No ta.

Pretty much aye.
He could do himself and the club a favour by signing a deal.
If he doesn't, fine.
We haven't 'lost' £3m, it's not there, we will have however paid the wages we were going to pay anyway.

I'd play hardball.
Each to their own.

Four million quid to send a message, that we're a scunner to play for and do business with.

I can see both sides but every now and again you have to take a stand, send a message out.
I'd keep him for the year and use him only when necessary.
We'd lose on this transaction but it's sets a course for future deals.
As Viz described it when they increased the price of their magazine "New, cough up or eff off price"
