I have the same pair of Birkenstocks. Therefore if he should leave I should be a suitable replacement for the same money.

*pulls out the POTY argument*

:)
Gary Caldwell and Charlie Mulgrew cards also fall from the same deck. Luca looks forlorn. His argument is lost.

Quoting limited to 3 levels deep
We can't......if he wants to run it down, he can, and there is nuffink we can do about it.
No but if he doesn't resign and wants to run down his contract we should stick him in the reserves or development squad. We should only use him if we really have to. A year out of the limelight would see his value diminish a fair bit!

Let's play hard ball when we have to
If he wants to let his contract expire, I can understand the view that he shouldn't play this season; I disagree but I can see the logic in a kind of twisted way. However, making his life as difficult as possible, "let him rot in the reserves/yoots", etc, is a lot of pish. The guy has done nothing wrong, and is perfectly entitled to leave at the end of his deal (that we agreed to).

You freeze out trouble-makers, arsepieces if you will, not players who are completely professional and make a decision you don't like.

Hope he stays. As was pointed out a page or so ago, if you were to buy him would you be happy dropping £3m? If so just give him that in wages. If he doesn't think that's enough then eff him; steal his sandals and make him play with the weans. :ph43r:

Hopefully he stays. You can't blame someone wanting to leave if they can double or even treble their wages though as it's a relatively short career

Hopefully he realises that if he pushes on with us next year he may even see his potential wages increase further and maybe get a better club down south. Coupled with that, another Champions League campaign against some big names under the lights are the things he'll likely remember when he gets older vs away to Fulham.

It's not so much the prospect of losing him that's the worst thing, it's that we're possibly losing both Roberts (despite the inevitability of his return to his parent club) AND Armstrong in the same summer. Whatever way you slice it, that's a HUGE blow, and unless we were to significantly strengthen in the next 6/7 weeks, we'll be going into this season a lot weaker than we'd ideally like to be. Of course there's still the possibility Armstrong will sign the extension and the fears of losing 2 key players of last season will be rendered moot

Armstrong is making a big mistake if he goes

As others have said VVD and Wanyama were coasting in the spfl before they went

Armstrong has impressed for 6 months at most and he's doing that in a celtic side which gave him so many options

If he goes to West brom or southampton or any other team like these - who aren't as good as celtic - at this stage i think he'll get found out quickly and there won't be any friendly BR there to work it thru

And there'll be precious few win bonuses

Even were he to be getting 20k more per week with tax off that he's going for less than 600k a year more - and he could claw that back with his next deal by taking a bigger chunk of transfer fee itself and'or any further sell on

Its not rocket science stuart - you are good but not that good and BR can make you that good - sign on for 2 with option of third
so from a "Boardl" viewpoint...

we can sell someone not "very good", and only shown "6 months" of good football with us for megabucks!

No brainer really!!
no point in trying to get him to stay at all!

Agree, its a massive blow to the side if it happens. Armstrong is a key component to how we play.

Beginning to see the Ntcham and Benyu signings more and more for what they now appear to be. Major replacement level players for certainly Armstrong, and maybe even Bitton.

If he's been informally offered anywhere near £40k, it's a no-brainer for him. He's no real loyalty to Celtic.

He's had a great six months at Celtic but not irreplaceable. I'd hope to get the reported £10m, but I reckon it be more like £5-6m given his contract situation. We'll still have doubled our money and he contributed to the Invincible season.

Brendan got it in one when he spoke of a 25-year-old player having 120 wage packets left in his career if he looked after himself. If SA is being offered £45k a week when he's on £10k rising to maybe £25k with us, he would be daft not to grab it. Those are the cold, hard facts. But we have to punt now rather than risk him doing a Maloney and spinning it out with bullshiit until he walks for nothing. I said two weeks ago I'd give him two weeks and then punt. It's time to punt. This is really starting to remind me of Maloney's antics. Hope I'm wrong because I wanted us to buy Armstrong and I'm glad we did. But Celtic's welfare comes a million miles in front of any individual's ambition.

That and Benyu clearly was a punt.

I don't doubt it. But he needs a place in the team. Meaning someone isn't playing.

He's not going to a CL team so best to keep him for qualifiers, surely?

CL play off second leg is 23-24 August. Window closes a week later. I imagine we'll do business in that time.

Agree re Ncham and it's certainly interesting that Brendan has been saying that he likes Ncham as a number 8 when Ncham himself has suggested he prefers the number 10 role.

I think Benyu was just a punt on a decent young player who looks more ready than we suspected.
