Could the fact that he has 'only had one good season' be in some way a factor in Armstrongs thinking? I know Brendan has fantastic man-management skills, but what if Armstrong has some self-doubt left? He may think this is his last chance to set him up for life. Signing for us, and losing form again is vastly different to losing form down in England when you've got £15m coming in over the next 4 years.

Is there a genuine reason for the concern re Armstrong , or are we just being our usual negative selves?

Armstrong is a player we should be building the team round rather than selling. I'd be right disappointed if he left.

If he helps us pay for Paddy I will personally drive him, and his hair products, to Southampton.

Had the same thought myself.

If he kept his form up going into last season he'd be headed for an Aberdeen or if he went down south it would probably be the likes of a Nottingham Forest or something. He's never going to be a player one of the richest sides in England buy so if he can go down just now to a decent outfit like Southampton on a big deal then why not? If he stays here another season is he really going to get a vastly better club? If he stays and tanks then he's back to square one almost. if he goes now and doesn't set the heather on fire then he's got a four year deal to fall back on.

Armstrong is an exceptional finisher. Look at how many of his goals are placed away from the keeper, not just lashed in. He scored more goals from central midfield last season than anyone in our history. I accept that it may turn out that last term was the peak of his career but the idea that he can be easily replaced is fanciful to say he least and smacks of people preparing themselves for the player leaving.
Good point on his goals.

Rodgers talks of the fact he wants his teams to be capable of scoring from all over the park which is in effect what we had last season but we do need a box to box midfield player who can get on the end of the build up play ad score - Armstrong is as pointed out excellent at that.

Stat re most goals from central midfield in our history I don't agree - Dalglish had several seasons in midfield whereby he scored many more than Armstrong.

Jimmy McMenemy had a season whereby he got 23 iirc from midfield.

There are possibly others.
Yeah, at a stretch you could include Commons too. Even if we keep it to 1980 onwards then he outscored the likes of McLeod, Petrov, Naka, Lubo and erm McGinlay
I think Pat McGinley was our top scorer with nine, count them, nine goals. Amazing to think that almost quarter of a century ago Hibs paid £425k to take him back.

Probably fall into the same category. It's difficult to find good Scottish players we can build the team around hence why I'd rather we kept him. In the same way I've long argued about certain qualities Scott Brown brings to the team I can see Armstrong doing the same. Longer term there are definite benefits he'd bring to the team and Brendan will be fully aware of what is required to build his dynasty. Armstrong would be part of my foundations. If I was Brendan I'd be emphasising to Armstrong that he's one of the men he's relying on to lead us to 10.

However the flip side is that we've not built the team around him and therefore I think that we can manage him leaving this summer (if that's how it turns out).

All those saying we won't replace his goals - probably right but if we have as exceptional a season as we did last season then our main attacking midfielder won't be too far away.

Quoting limited to 3 levels deep
If they are in dispute about money, it'll probaby be over a figure like that.

Unless he's asking for stupid money to force a move.
It really wont be about the difference of the size of GMS's wages.

If he wants to stay and is in a genuine dispute with the club over terms, then it will be in that ballpark.

If he's asking for 40 grand a week, then he's basically requesting a transfer.

Unless a top half EPL team is in for him, I think he would be absolutely nuts to leave right now.

The chance for a huge pay day at a lesser club will be there for a few years yet if he maintains his form. The chance to continue to progress under a coach like Brendan, to win trophies and to play in the Champions League isn't something he's likely to get elsewhere.

I fear if he moves abroad the humidity will play havoc with his hair. Glasgow is perfect for him. No excessive heat, no UV damage. Good conditions for a luscious barnet

I never really loved him anyway.

His hair isnt even that good.

He will soon come crawling back when he realises how much he misses us and needs us.

I cant wait for us to be single and out on the town again.

Bitch.

Agreed. He was the first midfielder we had in years that was up to Petrov's level. He left in 2006.
