SOUTHAMPTON are ready to move for Celtic star Stuart Armstrong.

The midfielder is in the last 12 months of his contract and has yet to sign an extension.

Saints have been trailing Armstrong since his Dundee United days.

Senior staff watched the 25-year-old Scotland international in several games for club and country last season.

The Premier League club could offer him wages of £30,000 a week.

Now Armstrong must decide if he wants to stay at Parkhead or look south, with West Brom and Brighton also keen.

SOUTHAMPTON have joined the fight to land Stuart Armstrong from Celtic.

SunSport can reveal the English Premier League side are now on the list of clubs interested in the Scotland star.

Armstrong, 25, is out of contract next summer with Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers desperate to secure him on a new long-term deal.

Keep up to date with ALL the latest news, transfers and goals from Scottish football plus fixtures, results and live match commentary

But the midfielder has so far refused the terms on offer from the Treble-winning Hoops with his future at the club now hanging in the balance.

West Brom and top-flight new boys Brighton have been monitoring the former Dundee United star’s situation.

But now Southampton, under new boss Mauricio Pellegrino, have joined the race to take Armstrong south.

Celts have not yet received any bid for the midfielder but are bracing themselves for interested clubs to make their moves during the summer transfer window.

Had an outstanding last few months when he at last began to perform to something near his potential. He's a player whose career is on an upward curve but whether that momentum is maintained remains to be seen.

At this stage of his career I'm not sure a club like Southampton is a good move. VVD was a much more complete and consistent performer when he moved to St Mary's. Southampton gave his established talent a platform. Armstrong is not such a complete talent. I'd say Celtic under Brendan Rodgers is the best place to continue the development we witnessed last season. If he moves to England I don't think it will take that long for Armstrong to realise that too.

agree with that. would be surprised if the southampton talk was anything other than his agent trying to force a new contract through

I'd love the bugger to stay but if his head or heart is saying something else then I think we are well covered in that area of the pitch. Let's get top dollar and wish him all the best.

£10m seems not too shabby for a guy in his last year.
If he's not willing to sign, then punt him asap.

Then I remember how well he's played this season and I think £10m!!? Eff off!

Then I remember the one year left bit again. :(

Hes a good player and lucky to be playing at a club like celtic. £10m would be good business especially if he isnt signing a new deal.

If he leaves, we need to sign a good replacement as we're not well covered at centre mid, especially in europe.

Armstrong plays two positions and we are well covered at the moment for one of them. If he plays in the hole, then we have McGregor, Rogic or this lad from Chelsea, if states interest is true. If we are looking for someone further back who plays with Brown in the centre then we have Eboue, Callum or Bitton (not his greatest fan), so it would be good to get someone here.

I'd far sooner lose sleep over losing Tierney than I would Armstrong and 10mill for a guy we got for buttons in a deal that rested heavy on GMS being the better player, is a win for me.

It's Stuart Armstrong. He's not special. Get him to eff if he isn't signing and move on, there are Wanyamas and Ledleys out there we can get.

This would work if it was easy to just go out and sign a Wanyama tomorrow.

We're in a better position now than we were when we signed Wanyama to be fair. We're a more attractive prospect.

True.

I think I'd rather have Armers now though.
