Interesting article in the SMH re Rogic becoming the new star for the Socceroos. There's been a fair amount of coverage locally re his season and of course the Scottish Cup.

Quote:

Fact is, the Socceroos haven't sold out any major venues since the 2015 Asian Cup. There's been plenty of introspection, but perhaps it comes down to something as obvious, and simple, as this: the time has come to create a new star.

The challenge is to choose the right player, and then to properly promote him. On the latter, FFA's unwillingness to put money and resources into marketing has to stop. On the former, who?

Three candidates stand out. Mat Ryan, Aaron Mooy and Tom Rogic. Ryan, especially if he moves to the EPL, has credible claims but rarely do goalkeepers become poster boys. Mooy has the talent, but not the personality. Which leaves Rogic.

Rogic ticks all the boxes to become the next Socceroos star. He had a taste of stardom as a teenager when he won the Nike talent quest, and didn't particularly enjoy it. But time has moved on, he's become more accustomed to the limelight since emerging at Celtic, and the word is he's matured as much as a person as a footballer. Soon to marry his childhood sweetheart, Rogic is poised to hit the big time at a stage of his life and career when he's better equipped to handle the pressure.

The Socceroos need a new Harry Kewell, or Tim Cahill, or Mark Viduka. Badly. Much as Postecoglou is an outstanding public presence, he's not a player. Rogic is, and an exceptional one at that. The man to get the turnstiles moving again? Why not?

FIFA's unwillingness to put money into marketing? :ponder:

Good performance as well. If the rest of the team had turned up for the first half they might have done better than a narrow loss.

He did well, some nice touches, protected the ball well, well-taken goal (albeit at second attempt).
Nice to hear the commentator give him credit for "that late equalising goal in the Scottish Cup final". :ffs:

Wee bit scrappy with the deflection, but I thought he did well to react to the rebound.

The lack of a 90-minute engine is used to berate him, but if he can give us 60 minutes of craft, intelligence and guile... WGAF?

Looked good yest. Good to see that so early in the season. We've been talking about getting that No10 for quite some time now. Rogic is definitely that guy now.

last time I saw feet move like that, they were attached to Michael Jackson.

the guy is insanely talented. There was one piece of control in the second half that defied physics. I love him dearly.

Did someone not say on here recently that Rogic has a medical condition which can hit him at any time during a game for a shot period? That would explain how he can look out on his feet at 70 minutes but then be fit and able enough to pop up with last minute winners. The lad has scored quite a few last minute winners for us.

He is a delight to watch, a fantastic player.
