I've never really understood the "if he had a decent partner..." argument.

It's been trotted out for numerous cb's as an excuse for them being rubbish. Balde losing the form he showed in the Seville season because he was stuck next to Varga after that (which argument ignored Balde's various failings which were all too apparent pre-Seville).

I don't see why a player should be able to control or pass a ball better if he plays next to Van Dijk instead of Ambrose. I'm not saying that having an experienced, good player next to you, talking you through the game and able to cover you from time to time doesn't make any difference but boyata's mistakes this year have virtually all been self- inflicted
Agreed.

In theory we could try and find the right partner for him... or we could just replace him with someone who isnt complete rubbish. :ponder:

Horrendous on the ball.
Poor at defending.

We deserve better.

I remember when he signed I had a quick look on YouTube to see what we were in for. Any sense of optimism evaporated after precisely 8 seconds.

He has turned out exactly as I imagined. Punt.

In the first home league game of the season, against Ross County, in the first twenty minutes, he made three or four passes in a row straight to the opposition. Under no or little pressure. By half time, I think it was six. It was calamity time, every time.

He doesn't jump to head the ball.

I don't think he is a footballer, never mind a defender.

I think he can be a player for us.

He's strong, quick & chips in with the odd goal.

Let's give him a half season. He might improve.
Think that the only thing he can do is improve. He certainly can't get any poorer.

Like Ambrose, I think he has assets. Strength, height, pace.

There are even times when he does look like he can play with the ball and pass it.

Like Ambrose, everything can come crashing down in a second. His lack of confidence is based on the fact that he knows it too. Most passes are made made on a prayer.

Players can improve through coaching and getting experience. My feeling is that he is too much of a work in progress. With Man City, Celtic, and Belgium on his CV, I think he'd get a decent move somewhere.

Height and pace I give you but he was absolutely ragdolled by an aging Kenny Miller in the cup semi final.

He's strong. Doesn't mean he's learned to use it properly, but he's strong

That will explain his 4 goals then.

I stand by that on the day at Ibrox Wilson DID play like McGuigan. You say it was obvious he had ability. NO it wasn't. He was absolutely dreadful in his first season. Every bit as bad if not worse than Boyata.

Clearly someone running the Belgian national team sees something in Boyata. I am not predicting he will turn it around. I willing to give him another chance in the same way Wilson got one.
It might not have been obvious to you but he didn't suddenly transform from Paul McGugan into a Champions League quality player. His ability was there all the time and the mistakes he made were way, way overplayed. Your Paul McGugan comparison was absurd, I'm sorry. I seem to remember you eventually agreed with me on the horror show that was Glenn Loovens. Give it a while and we'll be on the same page with Boyata too. ;)
Murph

On the day at Ibrox, Wilson was up there with Ian Andrews and Regi Blinker as a player totally unprepared for the OF atmosphere who, on their debut in such a game, was utterly dreadful.

In that match he was like McGuigan. Did he go on to have a career like McGuigan ? No, he did well the following season after nearly being sold in the summer.

But when I say well, I don't mean outstanding Murphio. . If he was as good as you are making out, why did he move to Notts Forest, who have just released him. He was replaced by a player who has 20 times his ability (Van Dijk)

And if you want to bring up historical opinions on our defence, I recall you arguing that you couldn't drive a bus through Tony Mowbray's Celtic back 4 ;)

Who said anything about him being a striker? Your own words tripped you up and I was only being decent enough to bring it to your attention.

That "pass" aside, that might be the best I've seen him play!

Have you seen the four goals? Three come to mind. Quarabag, when he was unmarked and got in front of the goaly. Ross County, I think, where his feet didn't leave the ground, and another at Parkhead, a glancing header at the front post, while he was running.

He was routinely out-jumped by opponents in our half most of the season.

He has his plus points: strong and quick, decent in the tackle. But to describe him as even being 'raw' is being far too kind. There's always a howler lurking in there.
