boyata is definitely one that makes sense and fits the profile.

not played much in recent years though
It's quite depressing that someone who's "not played much in recent years" can fit the profile of the type of player we're looking for. I can't claim to have ever seen Boyata play but from what I can gather he's had a few unsuccessful loan spells and can't get near a Man City defence which has been getting criticised all season.

What wasn't smart financially about the Denayer deal?
No financial return.
I get what you're saying, but at the same time our recruitment over the summer was really iffy - certainly looked very off-the-cuff in comparison with the January window where we saw some really targetted transfer activity. It looked like we were plugging holes over the summer rather than building for the long term, which agree isn't great. But any new manager needs time to ascertain how good his squad is and where the weaknesses are.

I think Denayer was a decent piece of business as a one-off. We took a small loss, granted, but on the other hand his signing helped forge an apparently decent relationship with Man City. They'll cast off reserve players every season who would improve our first team squad, so getting in with those players could be valuable.

I like the sound of Boyata. He's young still, he's proven he's got some quality but he's been cast aside recently and has something to prove. I hope we're signing a hungry young fella with the quality to improve the team - and on a permanent basis!

He had one injury-disrupted loan spell at Bolton Wanderers when he was challenging Gary Cahill for his position, and one short-term loan spell at Twente.

I think "unsuccessful" is a tad harsh. They're not stellar, but neither are they bad.

I hope this isn't true. I have only seen him play a handful of times but he has never impressed. I remember when he played against Arsenal and was sent off after a few minutes. My Bolton supporting mate reckons he was piss poor during his loan spell. He is 24 already and has done next to nothing in his career.

Is this really the type of player we want at our club? Seems like Lawwell might be trusting his sons judgement a bit too much in our transfer dealings.

Given that a month ago we were linked with Danny Wilson I'd be more than happy with Boyata.

Point still stands, though.

You're criticising someone for relying on another person's judgement by, er, relying on another person's judgement.

Correct. We did not benefit financially from him at all.

Correct. We did not benefit financially from him at all.
We did know however we could have made money on him as he was contracted and that our team wasn't going to be disrupted unsettled after a year.

Been great having Denayer but all we've heard is how much we're going to miss him next season etc. and we're going to have to build from scratch, again.

Addressing a major problem area well in advance of the CL qualifiers by looking at the same Premiership club we got the SPL young player of the year from last season? How very dare you, Lawwell :shakefist:

I saw him twice, maybe more. Once at RB, where he was very uncomfortable, my impression was that he played mostly an alibi game (I'm not sure you use this expression in English, it's when you are more worried to do a mistake than trying do something useful with the ball, and you play accordingly). He was considered a great talent, but at this point, probably, what he needs is to (re)gain self-confidence, and confidence from the manager (and teammates). IMO, worth a risk, with the right approach he may well live up the expectations from his younger years.
