I'm in the Boyata love in camp. Thought Belgium looked very shaky tonight in defence which they've not exhibited so far.
Maybe this is because Japan played really well and got their tactics spot on, but I did think that playing Kompany was the wrong decision.

You have to say that re-jigged Belgium defence was all over the place. Our man's reputation grows - by being not part of that shambles. They were pretty solid when he was playing.
Yup, reputation-wise, Dedryck played a blinder last night
I didn´t see the whole game, but from what I saw, anyone who´s seen Belgium play up to now will be looking at what was different about their defence last night :bawman:

Belguim looked shaky at the back because they have finally come up against a decent team. Their midfield afforded japan far too much space which allowed them to get the ball into the strikers and thus put the defence under pressure.

This being said, the manager does now have a decision to make over whether to bring boyata back for brazil game.

IMO boyata would have made no difference to the way the midfield played last night.

Belgium defence had a structure when Boyata played. He is quick, sat deep and kept it simple - attacking the ball when it was played into his area and making simple passes out of defence when in possession. There was no shape to Belgiums defence last night and Kompany, in particular, was well off the pace.
Japan played an excellent, disciplined pressing game. They pressed as a unit and gave Belgium very little time on the ball. Fellaini made a big difference in the middle when he came on due to his more physical play.

Kompany doesn’t look anywhere near the player he was. Too many injuries seem to have taken their toll.

He got a free kick yesterday because he fell in a heap and the linesman felt sorry for him. He was a shambles and might not be fit enough to be dropped straight into this stage of the world cup.

Shame to see a great player on the slide and arguably playing on too long.

I wouldn't want him remembered for a Stevie G moment.

Yeah, that was fairly pathetic.

Japan should have scored from that position as well.

Have to wonder what Martinez would have done in ET.

I think Belgium's defensive problems also stemmed from the attempt to fit Mertens, Hazard and De Bruyne all into the same side, along with Carrasco as the left-wing-back. Only really Witsel was doing the screening job in front of the back 3 and he's not an out and out holding player.

You could really see this with both Japan goals, with too much time given to the ball-player for the 1st and the goalscorer for the 2nd. Take a look at the covering/closing down from the midfield 2, Witsel and De Bruyne for each goal.

A lot can be attributed to the fact that Roberto Martinez is the manager...

I don't think having Boyata instead of Kompany would have made much difference, though the latter does look a shade of his former self. It was quite harsh on Boyata after he has done quite well - he also would have posed more of a threat on set-pieces, an area Belgium should have made much more use of given their obvious height advantage.

Kompany is done at the top level IMO. Guardiola has been trying to ease him into the Man City team over and over for his entire time there, but he either keeps breaking down or making clown mistakes. It's a shame, because he was exceptional, but his body just won't do what his mind wants it to do. Boyata might be simultaneously garbage and amazing, but as long as he does what he was doing at the tail end of our season, i.e not taking stupid chances on the ball, he can do the job for Belgium defensively. With cultured passers all around him in that team, he should be fine.

So do I.

He was very good in our last few games of the season and now had a good run out for Belgium.

People expecting us to bring in a new Left Back, Centre Half & Right Back for the CL isn't the best idea :( BD & KA in the middle would give us some stability, with JS in there as back up

One of those players who has a couple of good games in the World Cup but is ultimately shampoo. We’ve seen it often enough, and regularly.

Assume you're talking about Gamboa, and at best he would be back up for Lustig

If your talking about someone else at the World Cup :ponder: then I take you're not of fan of this other player

Belgium cannot deny destiny. Big Boyata is coming home with a gold medal after scoring the winner in the final.

If Tierney goes we need to push the boat out to keep Boyata. Someone make him a banner with a heart on it to let him know how much he's loved.

I would have been fine with him leaving until this Tierney business, but losing two key defenders in the same window would be a blow.

A banner??? He's got a song ffs!! What more does he want. Tom Rogic doesn't even have that.
