Our best central defender.
Agreed. When he is not trying to play football.

He’s finishing the season very well.

I still think we need far better if we want to improve in the CL next season though.

He's had a good season.

He's made mistakes and had some bad games within it but he's been good in more games than he's been bad.

That's not a popular view but it is an accurate one. I get that people want better still, but deriding his faults whilst turning a blind eye to his abilities is churlish

No surprise that when Brendan says stop effing about with it at the back he looks a bit better. Asked to do the basics he does ok and is a better threat in the opposition box than he is defending his own.

Going forward he remains an ill-fit to how we want to play because he just doesn't have the concentration to do it. Evident again with the lapse yesterday.

Needs punted ASAP.

Pretty much agree. It says a lot about our defence that he is our strongest defender. Clearly the manager has a philosophy of building from the back. He has tried his hardest to get our keepers to play it out from there. Boyata simply cannot do it. As a stopper he is excellent, but he is always going to cost us as soon as he is asked to do something with the ball at his feet. He, like Jozo are simply not good enough or suited to our managers style of play.

Solution - manager changes his "philosophy" to vary tactical approach to building attacks, safety-first, etc. Result - opposition managers unable to plan for pressing and counter pressure opportunities. The extra second or two that defenders are afforded means ironically they actually can pick out passes and maintain composure. Edit to acknowledge Brendan's success but hope that yesterday provided a realisation of what can be achieved by varying method of attack/clearance.

This is the correct way to do it. If an aggressive press is used against us from the start punt it long to Dembele or Edouard and hopefully collect the contested ball and have the chance to attack from within their half.

When, and if, they relax the pressing game, then we can start playing the ball out from defence.

Boyata may not be great coming forward with the ball but he can certainly pick a forward pass. If Ajer is given licence to come forward do we need both?

DEDRYCK BOYATA hopes to commit himself to Celtic for the long term.

The Belgian defender is in negotiations over an extension with the Hoops. His current deal expires at the end of next season.

But with a double Treble up for grabs at Saturday’s Scottish Cup Final, Boyata, 27, wants to stay to win more trophies.

He said: “I’m in talks with the club. I’ve said it before: I’m happy here.

“Right now, nothing is done and it’s not like I can actually say what’s going to be done.

“But I’m in talks and we’re trying to find some sort of arrangement.

“I’ve been talking a lot with the manager and trying to find a solution.

“I don’t want to say I think it will be done then nothing happens later but everything is positive at the moment. I’m having a great time.”

As well as a final and possible new deal on the horizon, Boyata is sweating over a World Cup spot.

Belgium boss Roberto Martinez is due to name his squad for Russia on Monday. Boyata insists he’s been given no hint as to whether he’ll be picked.

With a holiday flight booked for the same day it means he won’t know his fate until he lands.

Boyata said: “I’ve worked hard to be in the selection this year. I don’t think I’ve missed one.

“But there are a lot of players in the squad and to get a place for the World Cup was always going to be difficult.

“I’m hopeful. It’s a dream I’ve had since I was younger. I missed the Euros because of an injury, which was hard.

“If I don’t go this time I’ll be sad. I’m just hoping and there is stress but you just don’t know.

“It will be a huge 48 hours for me, but as soon as the final is over I’m going on holiday.

“So when the squad is announced I’ll be on the plane. I’ll be in the air. I won’t have a clue. A few hours later isn’t going to change anything.”

Boyata joined the Hoops from Manchester City in 2015 but had no idea just how big the club was.

As he prepares to try to make history against Motherwell he realises more than ever what the interest is like — even back home in Belgium.

He said: “There are a lot of Celtic fans in Belgium. I realised that when I came here. I have a lot of love and support from back home.

“There are Irish bars in Brussels. I never knew that until I signed here.

“It just shows you how great and big the club is.”

I'll be delighted if Boyata commits to a new contract.

Similarly delighted if Armstrong and Rogic sign new deals with us.

Boyata looks like a player.
He has the physique and he has the skill, but his footballing brain lets him down.

his biggest problem for me is one of development, he makes mistakes you excuse a 21 y/o from making not a 27 y/o but when you compare him to KT; he's only played 20-30 games more in his entire career. Armstrong again still younger but not as much has played loads more than DB. christ ajer isn't far off DB numbers either.

I think he is the classic example of one of those players who went to one of these big english clubs young and didn't play enough proper football between 18-22 and you still see the rawness you'd expect to be gone by now.

no question he looks better when he isn't asked to play like maldini coming out of defense but another problem BR has for me is not one of his centre half's look comfortable playing left side of a central pairing, ajer is nervous on left side, so is boyata and so did jozo.

probably the biggest reason i hope he moves on is simply as long as he is at celtic its him + 1 in central defense; i don't think he's good enough to be the first pick central defender and speaks volumes because right now we don't have 1 central defender i really trust (that will sound harsh on ajer as he is developing but i'm meaning a full established centre back)

For me his biggest problem is inconsistency, I'm struggling to think of any other defender I've seen who can go from looking as composed, aggressive and reading the game superbly to playing like a donkey for a few games. Incredibly frustrating player.
