wtf was he doing when he tried to chip the ball back into our box?

That was the brainfart to end them all
I think he just panicked and made a carrot of his kick. I also think the goalie shouldn't have gave him it. We shouldn't be playing one touch passes like that in our own box. Especially Boyata. It was far too tight and the ball should've been emptied.

There’s a player underneath it all somewhere. And a person too.

He went from being a bombscare, to being a rock after coming back from injury putting in some good performances and getting on the score sheet.

His confidence is shot, as is that of a lot of others too.

Haven’t most of his recent injuries been down to him rather than the opposition?

Fair comment.

We can ill afford to keep him in our first 11.....he has never been 100% comfortable for me when watching him but his howlers and performances this season have been as poor as when he was at a low 18 months ago before gaffer came. Needs to go elsewhere now.

It's always "confidence" when a player starts playing crap. Never just "regression to the mean"

Aye, it was definitely a case of “you have it” “No, you have it”

Boyata shat it. He needs to turn away and play it forward.

It’s the job of the staff to push the mean up and reduce the spread. Not that they aren’t doing it. It’s a lot more difficult than we’d like to think. Although it’s no doubt easier to get a player to peak for a short time rather than have them maintain a high level for a sustained period of time.

A lot of others lacking confidence probably a bit of an exaggeration. But it’s a lack of confidence that’s preventing players trying the pass, or making the run, or allowing them to keep their head up when they are running with the ball without the fear of losing it.

How can a player that was part of a side with a record unbeaten run, lack confidence. Is it not just more likely his decent form was the exception and he is in fact, crap?

Sinclair?

Of course footballers can lack confidence. It’s ridiculous to suggest otherwise.

With Boyata, I just think he’s coming back from a long lay off. Once he’s up to speed, he will be fine.

I don't think he will be fine tbh. He makes the same mistakes continually. At best he doesn't fit in with the way we play. I don't think we should be offering him a new contract on improved terms. We need better.

Boyata has now hit the stage of being such a relentless letdown that he can't be saved IMO.

The likes of big Stubbs struggled and were written off when they arrived. Then paired with a better quality partner and he improved.
No doubt Boyata would still improve with a quality CB beside him. But not enough for what we need. He's the new Efe.

He’s made mistake after mistake when he’s not just back from an injury lay off. He will most certainly not be fine.

He has not played too many matches for his age but I don’t think he has the capacity to learn the way a younger player with similar game time will. It may be that the lack of competitive football at an earlier age has killed his chances of fulfilling any potential he may have had as a young player I think the likes of city and Chelsea are ruining a lot of good young prospects or at least delaying their progress.

Makes too many mistakes for my liking.
Taking all the positions on the pitch into account I think that goalkeeper and centre halfs are the ones you absolutely need to know what you are getting every game. They need to be solid 7 or 8 out of 10 every match in my opinion. A 9 one match followed by a 5 or 6 the next just doesn't cut it in these vital positions.

Totally agree with that. We have brought CB's in over the years with low expectations of their ceiling and they've turned out solid consistent performers.I like any player who pulls on that hooped shirt and will always support them but i would be against giving Boyata a new deal.Time to move on,lets see Compper to see what he's got for now and next season.Ajer will be a mainstay over coming years in my view and i am also starting to warm to Hendry. If Jozo wants away then sell him and there will still be three decent CB's in the rotation and hopefully an experienced fourth brought in during the summer.

I think, with the emergence of Ajer and the signing of Hendry, Boyata is nearing the end of his time with us. He isn’t suited to the type of football the manager wants. He can have wee spells where he looks like he’s capable but in time he gets found out. In the Summer I’d expect another couple of ball playing types to be brought in and Boyata and Jozo to move on.

If we go into next season with Jozo and Boyata at the heart of defence, or else playing players out of position when one or both of them are injured, we'll be lucky to qualify never mind look forward to getting gubbed in the group stages.

We need better than what we have and my gut feeling is that includes Compper too.

I just think he's a poor footballer. He could have all the confidence in the world but we still need a better player than he is
