He's been here a while now and threatened to become a quality player but injuries or bombscare football are never far away. Definitely has potential but it's a few seasons with us now and at his age we should be beyond that stage, he's only around two year or so younger than Efe I think and we rightly bailed on him for similar reasons and performance.
Exactly, he's coming into what should be the prime years of his career and he still makes wrong decisions either by being caught in possession or poor choice/execution of passes too often to be written off as unlucky or nothing to worry about.
He can get away with it a lot more in run-of-the-mill domestic games as he has a bit of pace about him to try and get back or crap forwards not making the most of the chance but in big games he's not always as lucky.
This. Decision making is by far the weakest part of his game and is a crucial part of being a competent centre half. He is at an age now where I would suggest he is not going to improve in that department to the extent that he is ever going to be good enough for the team to progress to the levels Brendan wants to achieve.
Never a penalty, but all caused because he's not a very good footballer.
Bayern Munich at home, another basic error, another goal. Huns on Sunday, with Morelos almost scoring in the second half after another blunder.
The guy isn't good or consistent enough to play for us in big games. One good game away at Anderlecht is outweighed by all those other times he does something daft, and it's always because he makes bad decisions.
We have to be looking to improve on him if we want to progress in Europe.
I actually agree with you regarding Europe although he has had good games. Munich away for instance.
In domestic football though he has played well for us.
He has not made nearly as many mistakes as people have said.
He made two glaring errors within the space of 5 minutes that led DIRECTLY to two Inverness CT goals in what amounted to his third League game at Celtic.Luckily we were 4-0 up at the time, but it is not really he point.
It is not exactly a list as lengthy as Efe's, but his errors are considerable.
There was another one away to Molde, but again, these are only the ones I can recall that lead directly to goals against. He is far too clumsy to be considered a long term option.

I think that's where a lot of the Boyata criticism comes from. That ICT game. Since then people have had him down as a diddy and they refuse to budge in their opinion.
There is not a footballer at any level who doesn't make mistakes. Boyata's are few and far between.

It isn't at all. It was merely the start of the problem.
There are plenty that accused him of downing tools in the semi final that season, but I wasn't among them. He was clearly injured, and never appeared again that season.
But that is also the point. He may have been unlucky, but he is injury prone. Much is talked about Simunovic, but Boyata has been injured for long parts of each of his three seasons at the club, and is now apparently not looking to renew his deal.
In the light of all of that he's been extended a fair bit of slack, as I identified a few days back.
Never a penalty, but all caused because he's not a very good footballer.

Mistakes yes but it's commonly fatal mistakes that lead to a goal, spectacular efforts rather than just your caught on the wrong side or goes through the back giving fouls type errors. It's there you go mate, have a dig, on a plate stuff. Not clearing lines when it's easy to do so, dwelling on the ball. It's anti defence mistakes that often lead to big trouble. It feels as though we are getting by with DB and Jozo at the minute, expectations haven't been met from those two and I feel its a big reason why we haven't progressed as we might have this season overall. Still time to have a strong finish but they haven't had the season I'd hoped and prepared for.
If we accept that the league is in the bag then we should go with Ajer and Hendry for the rest of the campaign and see if they can be moulded into a first choice pairing. I would be more willing to accept the odd mistakes from them in the hope that they will learn from them. Our current two first choices seem incapable of learning and are repeating the same mistakes over and over again

Hibs Bayern Huns
All this season, all cost us a goal.
Yep, and that's the ones that cost us. He makes plenty that we get away with and so get forgotten about. For me he makes too many mistakes to be reliable. Not so much a case of getting found out in the big games- more like usually getting away with it in the SPFL.
Sviatchenko was one of our most consistent performers for a whole season under Deila but struggled when Rodgers changed the style of play and people were desperate for him to be sold and we've rightfully shipped him out.
Boyata had a purple patch in the second half of last season but apart from that has been fair to awful for us so I'm not sure why he's being defended so much. He's 27 now so we shouldn't be talking about potential anymore. He's great on his day but nowhere near reliable enough unfortunately. We need better than him and Jozo if we're going to improve as a team.
Boyata is prone to being caught in possession like that trying to be too fancy on the ball, whether he has been playing regularly or just back from injury.
Go back and read the thread.
I’ve clearly stated tiredness wasn’t the cause of the first goal. It is a difficult time of the game for someone who hasn’t played for weeks.
Poor concentration cost him at that point
You have to remember the only reason he hadnt played for weeks was because he got injured chasing after a guy he directly gave the ball to against Killie.
Never a penalty, but all caused because he's not a very good footballer.

I disagree. Football supporters tend to become quite entrenched in their views. I have always though that Boyata is a much better passer of the ball than he is given credit for. Like an other player he will give the ball away from time to time.
I also disagree that he has been cut any slack. I would say the majority of posts on this thread are supporters having a go at Boyata.

Ha ha, that's a mental post. He got injured because of a shampooe plastic pitch. It wasn't his fault at all.

Hibs Bayern Huns
All this season, all cost us a goal.
Hibs? He recovered and made an excellent challenge. The hun ref gave a penalty. So, not having that one.
Munich yep and Sevco. He should never have started on Sunday and he has been solid against them in every other game he has played. Semi-final apart.
The way people are talking though he makes mistakes every week that lead to goals.
I've put a link to the video where he clearly, completely, effs it up and is bailed out by Bitton. Just because the ref then makes an arse of the PK call doesn't change the fact Boyata made the glaring error that put us in that position in the first place. The PK call is nonsense, of course it is; but we're only there because he made such a mess of controlling the ball in the first place.
Nobody said he makes them every week; you've pulled that one out of your arse.

Don't agree with any of this tbh.
Maybe I was hoping for too much, at times I've thought highly of both but the consistency we need in defence hasn't been there for me. It's been too stop start with injuries and form.

I saw your video. You came running on here when this happened for an embarrassing I told you so moment.
Boyata gave the ball away on the half way line and then recovered. The ref gave a pen that never was. So to blame him from that goal is ludicrous.

There's been plenty of ones that he's got away with. Usually his touch or his passing. I also have questions regarding his heart in games.
We need better than both him and Jozo. It's that simple.
Anybody interested in grabbing a couple of burgers and hittin' the cemetery?

Quoting limited to 3 levels deep

He definitely got injured chasing one of his own frequent mistakes; he may, or may not have gotten injured because of the pitch. Your criteria for 'mental' seems a bit off to me. You can both be right though, and you both probably are.
