How much is this a Lawwell signing?
Neil Lennon will no doubt tell us he targeted him 3 years ago.

Our increasingly incestuous relationship with City continues. Initially reaction is that Boyata seems a downgrade on Denayer.

We've went from a loan of a very promising youngster to "buying" someone who's surplus to their requirements, but who they still have the right to buy back... so could turn out just to be a loan, but with a variation on the payment scheme.

Boyata might turn out to be a fine signing, but I'm not entirely comfortable with the whole Celtic City angle here.

I can't remember whether it was a Harry Brady CU podcast or ByTheMin Celtic, but there was a very relevant point about the relatively low sell-on value of players who have already "failed" in England.

That might be why Newcastle let us have Forster for so cheap

How much of this is a Ronnie signing? Good luck to the guy and I hope he does well but is there not a lawwell connection in there somewhere?
There is no signing Celtic will make that folk will not ask, "How much is this a Lawwell signing?"
Why do you think that is ?

Wasn't Forster player of the year in the season he spent at Norwich before joining us? :ponder:

He hadn't failed anywhere in England, Newcastle just couldn't see that he was destined to be such a good keeper.

Might have been posted already but here is a three minute clip of Boyata's contribution all in the same pre-season game against Bayern Munich in August 2013.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWxNBA4zqDs

Very hard to make anything of such a clip obviously. Not too cultured in possesion in that clip, but physical. Difficult from that to see if he has a turn of pace. Gets done for one of the goals too.

Seems to like a challenge, in an almost Balde-like 'I-don't-care-if-the ball-is-winnable-or-not' type manner. Looks a bit rash, not unlike Loovens.

Could achieve cult hero status (Balde), or cult hero status quickly followed by ridicule (Tebily), or simply ridicule (Loovens). Have I covered all the potential outcomes?

can't see the journeymen of St Johnstone and ICT giving him a hard time. Looks like a no-nonsense ball winner who knows his limitations.

Or how about derision followed by "actually he's okay" (K. Wilson)

The music is crap though so reserve judgement on him for a later date.

People writing him off based on him not being able to break through at Man City. Fact of the matter is he's been at the club through a period of massive change and financial boosting times meaning new managers every few years money being spent on several players intended to come straight into the first team. He undoubtedly had potentially a few years ago. He was also voted their young player of year in 2010/11 season when he broke into the Belgian national side.

His confidence is probably shot to pieces at the moment but we're pickin up a relatively experienced 24 year old who knows what's required at the top level for less than £1m. This is where Deila needs I prove his worth in redeveloping players like Boyata and helping his reach his potential.

I've seen him play on a handful of occasions and know he's very physically imposing, he's quick and strong in the air. He's not as easy on the eye as a Denayer or Van Dijk but if we get the right man to play in beside him that won't matter. All in all I'm happy with the signing and also happy with the link to Man City which others seem to be moaning about. This is a club that over the foreseeable future will be attracting the cream of European young talent and if for whatever reason they fail to meet the grade they may well be good enough to come here and do a job.

Great that we are getting business done early.

Wonder what sort of wages he would have been on at City.

He was player of the year at Norwich the year they won promotion to championship.

I think that's why Fitz put speech marks round "failed". It's open to interpretation. Boyata has failed to convince Man City (and possibly other EPL sides) that he's got the making of an EPL first choice centre half. That's not dissimilar to Newcastle's summation of Forster when they sold him to us.

Paul Brennan CQN saying terms agreed between player and club for an EPL player but sworn to secrecy :)
Also says he's been our number one target.
I'd imagine it's a player from a recently relegated club.
Wee rumour around Burnley about Scott Arfield.
