Slept at their goal.
If he'd slept he'd have stayed where he was.
Sadly he was all too naive at their quick free kick, and tried to nip in and intercept it.
Fixed that for you.

Physicality and pace will get him through most domestic games but he's not the answer. Sold the jerseys at the goal today and is an accident waiting to happen in the CL if we stick with him for next season.

In the Belgium squad and EPL experience we should be looking to cash in on him in the summer.

Still doesn't inspire me with confidence. Even when he's playing well he's always liable to switch off and cost us a goal. Could have done the same last week if Waghorn was more clinical.

Our defence is more solid when Sviatchenko and Simunovic play together. The former shored things up for us at the end.
It isn't though.
Erik is too short.
Fabio Cannavaro was 5'9. One of our record breaking centre back partnerships included Denayer, who wasn't particularly tall. Discounting Erik purely on height is ridiculous.

And yes, him and Jozo are our best pairing at the back.
A wee google has denayer at 1.84 which is over 6ft I'm sure. Not massive for a CB no doubt but this oft repeated idea that he was short seems wrong.

Edit: don't disagree with your point though

The manager chooses players based on form. If Erik's form improves again he is more than capable of taking Boyata's place.

The good thing is we have some healthy competition for those positions.

He has definitely improved but I think a centre-back is a a priority in the summer transfer window.

And a CM.

Hopefully get a couple million for him seeing as he's in the Belgian squad.

New guy and Jozo, with Sviatchenko as our back up.

He made a poor decision for the goal and the space he left behind was exactly where their boy scored from. I think that kind of choice shows the relative lack of football he's played despite being 27(?) - a 27 year old who's had 5/6 seasons of first team football behind him doesn't make that decision. In spite of that I thought he had a decent game and provided a physical and normally alert presence. He's an asset right now for sure.

Right ,my view yesterday was from low behind the goal ,have seen it now on
TV you are right he actually see's the danger and dives in early ( should have prob
got back in line ) got to say Brown turns his back and that allows the quick free kick,
had to laugh at the guy in front of us saying Gordon should have saved it.

Six foot is short for a CB when they don't have anything outstanding in the rest of their attributes. Talk of Canavaro and Baresi is moot. They were world class players despite their shortness not because of it. Erik not only is pretty short, he is squat in shape and not very fast. That isn't a good mixture. He is a decent footballer and has a great attitude but he isn't extremely talented in any one area of the game that dictates him being picked before the more physically blessed Boyata and Jozo.

He's ok.

He'll do a decent job in Scotland when we're playing well but always has a mistake in him that tend to lead to goals. Not fit for purpose in Europe.

Jozo is a very solid defender, imo. He was having a great game against Ajax until he fecked his ankle.

I think Erik's just going through a bad patch right now. He was quite good in Europe this year, no? Folk are waiting to pounce on even the tiniest Boyata error. Been solid otherwise.

Having said all that, I wouldn't mind if we were in the market for another CB for Europe. And no, Lustig is not the answer!
