I couldn't see the player we have now - a big physical unit absolutely, but not a fully functioning central defender that I was confident in.

I've no problem with being that wrong, it's fantastic to see the transformation.

He's doing well but I don't agree he is our best centre back... I still think that is Simunovic. But what a nice problem to have.
He's the only one not being rotated so Rodgers disagrees with you.
There are very obviously injury/fitness/stamina concerns with Simunovic that Boyata doesn't have - doesn't mean Rodgers disagrees with me at all. I think out of all of them Simunovic is the best player and most valuable asset. Put it this way, I'd be a lot more upset if we cashed in on Simunovic than either of the other two.

I think Simunovic is the best player out of the three we use but Boyata is the best defender. I'd start Simunovic and Boyata together as first choice.

Which is also a tad unfair on Erik because he has been very consistent for us. Like I say though, it's a nice problem to have. Boyata is playing well and looks a different player from the one we seen last season. But I think in Simunovic we have a top class defender who, at 22, can go on to have a career at the very top level - if we can keep him fit and injury free.

I was a bit sceptical after a couple of games, but last night he seemed very assured. His distribution and reading of the game was excellent. Need to see him in a more pressurised situation to be fully convinced, but the signs are really positive.

It's good that we have 3 very good young-ish defenders on our books with Kolo Toure as back-up, very strong in that position at the moment.

Seems to be the most unpopular choice just now but I still prefer Erik, he might not be as composed on the ball as the other 2 but I think he's the best at defending. When we're playing against better teams in Europe and we come under the cosh he will be the most vital for us imo.

I like Erik the best personally, he has been told to work on bringing the ball out of defence & he did that fairly well last night.
Boyata was very calm & confident in possession & didn't lose the ball much - even in tight spaces.

Having guys prepared to work on their game is great, I hope we can keep them all happy & wonder if we'd play all 3 together much? To keep them all playing & happy - or are they already happy enough & professional enough to fit 3 into 2 positions?

I agree.

Boyata has been (unexpectedly but incredibly) excellent since his reemergence, but I'd still worry about him in a Champions League context and in pressurised situations.

Time will tell.

Although he's not playing CL quality he's been in pressure situations.

There was a moment last night in the first half when a Caley player was closing on him, the ball was in the air, he took his time, didn't flap, and pulled it out the sky with a deft touch and moved it on with zero fuss.

He's showing presence in both boxes and by that I don't mean the strength of his play, it's his confidence in barking out orders to his teammates, attacking everything that comes his way with the belief he's going to win it, even getting involved with the opposition and not being a quiet mouse. He's showing real character at the moment

Boyata is playing like a man who totally believes in himself and long may it continue

Getting on a bit
[ * * * * * * * * * * ]
As others have said, he now plays with an air of confidence and a sure-footedness he hadn't previously displayed in his Celtic days, quite the opposite, he always looked nervy in possession, even under no pressure but the way he has come from nowhere to be almost a fixture at CB is credit to both him and the manager/coaching staff. He was regarded in the same category as Ambrose at the start of the season and even seemed to be behind Efe in the queue for first team spots at CB so it really is quite a turn-around, Boyata was probably the last choice for a CB spot back in July/August. Now he is arguably first choice, with Simunovic and Sviatchenko alternating as his partner. I just hope he continues in this vein of form and goes on to play a part in a successful European campaign next season and beyond. He is playing very well domestically, but if he can step that up to European level, he will look a bit of a bargain at £1.5M.
Keep it up, Dedryck. Another player given a new lease of life under Brendan Rodgers.

A Belgian mate told me Anderlecht tried to sign Boyata last Summer and again in January, but Celtic rejected the both requests very firmly.

I remember Chris Davies being interviewed soon after they arrived and stated that they saw Boyata as an important player in the squad.

Kolo has played a vital part in Boyata's resurgence too.

It was the combination last night that was impressive.Cannot remember when I saw seeing a Celtic central defence as comfortable and dominant as that.

Can't believe I'm saying this. He's our best centre back.
If :ph43r: didn't follow that comment 3 months ago you'd have been in for a serious doing on here. What an amazing development - I can't think of the last time a player who was written off by probably every single fan has become so key so quickly.

Absolutely not me. I'd have got him to eff before the start of the season 100%.

Shows how much I know....

The thing we forget about Dedryk is that he's the best part of 3 years behind where he should be due to injuries and wasting away in the City reserves. He's an excellent natural defender and it turns out he's a decent footballer when he's playing with confidence.

More than deserves his place just now.
