We're literally 270 minutes into the competitive season, and he's been pish for about 269 of those. In all seriousness, Forrest hasn't started well and his form over the past 4-5 years is inconsistent enough to give cause for concern regarding the way he's begun this season. For me, the fact he doesn't have Roberts breathing down his neck is impacting negatively on his game; he doesn't have to perform at the same level. That said, Hayes has been better than him in the brief time we've seen him, and deserves a start ahead of Forrest. He was behind Sinclair and Roberts in terms of performance last year, and he's already behind Sinclair and Hayes this season, despite how early it is. Forrest is an inconsistent player who consistently makes poor decisions. He's fine as a back up, but he is not good enough to be a first-choice winger for Celtic. |

Was he really that good or just consistently average for a while before going back to just being pish? 'He needs time, he needs a run of games, he's been injured, he's not fit' etc. - enough of the excuses, time to punt. |

James Forrest is a poor man's Theo Walcott or Aaron Lennon. He can run quickly in a straight line and control a football more frequently than most. Throw in a bit of a ability and all of a sudden you have a career. If he was born in England he'd be earning 50k pw. |

I've always liked Forrest but he seems to have coasted by on his 'prospect' tag for ages. He's 26 now though and still not consistent enough to be first choice for us, I don't mind having him in the squad but we should be looking for an upgrade. |

He is what he is - a hit and miss winger that managers seem to really like and fans think isn't very good. He is in either three categories - utter pish, injured or playing really well. Big problem is there is no consistency at all. I wouldn't trust him in a big game. |

Agreed. If Brendan has a weakness, it's talking up team performance/individual performance when it is shampoo. He did it regularly at Liverpool and it doesn't help us. If the team of a player are shampoo, just call it. |

270 minutes into a season that will last nearly 5000. He's started poorly but even if Forrest had a blinder and got to the touch line every time he got the ball he'd have crossed it to nobody as Rogic would still be about 30 yards from goal. As Bobby Peru pointed out, the players who played for Scotland seemed knackered. James Forrest was no worse than Tierney or Brown the other night. Edited by GetFunky, 29 Jul 2017, 01:07 AM.

What the feck. Now it is Brendan that is not a very good manager. If you dont like Forrest then you dont like him it is no big deal but calling out Rogers Sorry Brendan but you will have to stop all this positive talk about the players etc.

I think it was obvious roberts hurt teams more than Forrest, but Brendan looked like he wanted to give Forrest more of a chance. I can only imagine this is because he was our player and not on loan. He persisted with this until there was just to great a difference in what they contributed. All wingers will have a lot of days where they are ineffective, I just find Forrest has far too many of these and lots when we have the bigger games. He has a knack of not getting involved in games, but then suddenly when replaced Roberts was able to demand the ball more. |

Forrest should always be our 2nd choice winger unfortunately Hayes isn't much of an upgrade if at all so unless we buy another or paddy comes back we are likely to see him play more often than not. |

This is his 8th full season in the team. My biggest gripe with Forrest is that he's never really developed. He's exactly the same player now as the one who broke into the side in 2010. |

First team training

Forrest has had his chance, he's been in the first team picture for a few years now but has become a passenger, no doubt he probably trains hard and impresses enough to keep his spot in the team but main reason for that is he doesn't have any serious competition for a berth in the right wing position, which is the only true area of the team he naturally fits. Hayes is a completely different type of player to Forrest, people need to jump onto YouTube and watch some vids of Hayes, he's nothing like Forrest, he gives us a few different options. Bottom line here is we need a new right winger, and we all know who that wee man is, the club now have to make their move for him, he won't get games at his parent club again and will be shunned in favour of multi million pound team mates, and the player himself probably knows that. He needs to come back and be a hero again, in a place where he is worshipped both on and off the pitch. Celtic need Paddy Roberts and are hopefully aware of that and are doing things about it behind the scenes. |

It's a general observation not one held for this season only. People get really twitchy when it comes to Forrest. It's quite funny. |

Agree to an extent. I think Forrest is all he's ever going to be. I too had higher hopes, but still, he's a very talented footballer, who on his day can worry a lot of defenders. Has that real electric turn, and Rodgers knew straight away how vital pace is and that's why he signed him immediately last season. He had a cracking season last year, and I'm sure he will play more games than not this one. |

I know it's early doors, but he's been so inconsistent in his entire time at the club that the fact we're at the start of a season is hardly the issue. The whole side was gash on Wednesday; this thread isn't just about Wednesday, it's about Forrest at Celtic in general. He was the third best winger last season, and that was after he'd upped his game. We need another winger. BTW, did you just use the JF thread to have a go at Tom Rogic's positional sense?

The guy sits next to my dad waits for every Forrest mistake and lambasts him every time. Sits silently whenever he makes a good run or plays a good ball. Next time his touch lets him down, he's straight on him. I criticise Forrest when he plays poorly or makes a mistake but I praise him when he plays well or does something good. He's got a target on his back and there are a lot of supporters who have their minds made up that he's crap and there's nothing he'll ever do to change them. |

Firstly, I agree Roberts is a better player, get that out the way first. I don't agree that Rodgers played Forrest simply because he was our player whilst Roberts was merely on loan, Rodgers isn't that type of manager. Roberts started the season as first choice, got injured and Forrest came in the team. Forrest done enough to remain in the team for a while while Roberts had to make do with the bench, it's entirely possible that Rodgers thought Forrest was playing well and deserved his start ahead of Roberts. Roberts upped his game in the last 8 weeks or so of the season to a level he hadn't previously been at with us, once that happened then he deservedly started ahead of Forrest. I really don't think there is anything more to it than that. |

I don't think there is much mystique to this. BR didn't use Roberts much in pre-season and was on record as saying he wasn't doing enough in training. He was brought back in a giant Lincoln Red Imps and was fantastic. Got injured against Astana and Forrest came in and did well. Roberts returned from bench against Aberdeen and Rangers and then started against Barca but clearly wasn't back to his best yet. Forrest continued to do well. I think BR felt Forrest did more work for the team and was a safer choice. Roberts came off the bench to good effect in CL but his only other start was away to Man City. He got a few run outs as a centre forward in the second half of the season but he didn't actually assert himself as first choice right winger this season until the Scottish Cup Semi Final. |

There are examples of this right round the stadium mate. Forrest and mcgregor are harshly criticised at the games in my opinion. |
