celtic are currently trying to sign a kid I used to coach a couple of years ago. He's nothing special, even at boys club level, but he's absolutely massive for his age. This is the 3rd freakishly tall but limited youth I've known Celtic to sign.

It's absolutely astonishing that the club are still pursuing this policy.
So what's the motive behind the policy, do you know ?
Develop athletic players to eventually sell on down South at a higher premium perhaps. I think this was the plan for Amido Balde, sign a relatively athletic player and try to coach some football in to him. There was no other reason for signing him otherwise as it was patently obvious he had little technical ability.

It's a nonsense policy that will allow many talented kids to slip through the net.

I suppose there's a logic in it, especially if you're spending a lot on your academy.

Take Celtic's school at St Ninian's; they train before and after school, so the kids really have no time outside of that to play any additional football. For a pro-youth team who only train 3 nights a week, the most important thing in a player's development is probably going to be how much football they play outside of training. For a Celtic youth that variable doesn't exist after a certain age, so genetics becomes a more important determing factor.

Being more cynical, it might be that Celtic are operating in the knowledge that 90% of youth players, not only fail to make it, but never even have a chance of doing so. Any given squad probably has about 5 genuine prospects and the rest are just filler. Might as well make those filler-players big lads who'll give the genuine footballers a chance of actually winning games.

My main gripe with this approach is that I think it ignores the cumulative effect that good techincal players have. Put simply; technical players can make other technical players even more effective. Take Xavi, Iniesta and Messi, they'd all be great players anyway, but to a certain degree they owe their successes to each other. Xavi and Iniesta will go down as two of the best midfielders in history, but neither would've been as good in a team with a physical style that wanted them to run box-to-box and win second-balls all day. Iniesta wouldn't have been as good if he'd been used as a winger to chase through-balls down the flank and put in crosses.

If you prioritise big athletes you can end up with a style of play that only suits big athletes. If you rarely pass the ball into feet and your play involves lots of running-races and 50-50 challenges, it's the players who're good at those things that will prosper.

Obviously there's a balance to be struck, but I am surprised that Celtic are going down the "Find me an athlete and I'll make him into a footballer" path. If that worked, England wouldn't have spent the last 15 years wondering why they're not good enough at international level.

Chris Mccart has been in charge of our youth setup for 6 and a half years and in that time only James Forrest has really come through the ranks and established himself in the first team. That's a pretty poor return when you consider the facilities and the budget Mccart and his team are working with.

Just watched the Youth Cup match against Dundee United and really enjoyed it. A dominating performance away from home against a good side. Thought Henderson and O'Connell were tremendous. Henderson was the games most influential player and I can only recall him misplacing 1 pass all night. O'Connell's ability to pick out a pass into a crowded midfield is very impressive. Special mentions for Thompson's shooting (great goal) and Walter's tackling (the bhoy's no shirker!).
The team really seem to have taken on board Ronny's thinking and are looking like a powerful unit. They aren't doing particularly well in the league, but I wouldn't be surprised if they go on a run now till the end of the season.
Despite some of the negative comments on here, I feel that some of these guys have a chance. Especially with the support of the current coaching and management team.
It was breathtaking football at times, fantastic performance.

I try not to get carried away, but you are right. There was some sublime play and they maintained their focus for the entire game. Hopefully thrashing Sevco has given them the confidence to push on. I was wondering if their patchy league results were down to adapting to the new regime, a bit like the first team?

I think he has been a massive failure, there is a huge issue in our youth setup we get nowhere newr enough players into the first team.
The amount of players we have signed for decent money that go nowhere is baffling.

The intensity was something to behold, the United lads couldn't get near the ball, they must have been shellshocked.

Like you I wouldn't want to get too carried away but the Deila influence was there for all to see. Exciting times and some blitzkrieg football ahead? I like to think so.

LEIGH Griffiths will lead the line for Celtic tonight in the Development Squad’s English Premier League International Cup match against Sunderland.

Stevie Frail’s side will take on the Black Cats Under-21 team in their second match of the new tournament after drawing 1-1 with Everton at Goodison Park on November 25 in their opening game.

Griffiths will be supported by Paul McMullan, Joe Thomson and Kieran Tierney in attack as part of a 4-2-3-1 formation as the Hoops look to solidify their position at the top of their group in the prestigious competition with a win on Wearside.

CELTIC (4-2-3-1) Fasan; Fisher, O’Connell, Findlay, Waters; Henderson, Lindsay; McMullan, Thomson, Tierney; Griffiths.

SUBS: Hart, Keller, Nesbitt, McCart, Breslin, Donnelly, McIlduff.

paul george being let go in january and currently training with aberdeen (and posting trolling selfies with shay logan titled oneshaylogan)

shame he was put out the game for a year by a sickening leg breaking challenge against the huns just as he was in and around the first team. not sure hed have been as good as the hype and potential suggested when he was paraded at celtic park as a 15 year old but that definitely harmed his progress

the u19s are going to the mercedez benz indoor junior cup in stuttgart at the start of january again

slightly off topic but a few interesting reads on upcoming young players

scotlands youth prospects - http://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/2q2apo/scotlands_youth_prospects_a_year_in_review/

100 young players for 2015 - http://inbedwithmaradona.com/journal/2014/12/16/ibwm100-for-2015

mcginn christie and robertson named in the latter list. the egpytian hassan (trezeguet) who we were linked with earlier in the year mentioned in the comments

yeah saw the shay logan pic on instagram had no idea what it meant, makes sense now. was hoping he would make it but it seems that injury really ruined his chances at celtic, didn't do too well on loan at hamilton either from what i've read
