RANGERS...1
(Hardie 21)

CELTIC.... 6
(Twardzik 33 58, Tierney 34, Lindsay 83, Henderson 87, Nesbitt 90+1)

A DOUBLE from Filip Twardzik helped Celtic’s Development Side claim a sensational 6-1 victory over Rangers at Murray Park.

Ryan Hardie had fired the hosts in front against the run of play in the 21st minute but the Bhoys were undeterred and quickly turned the match around thanks to quick-fire goals from Twardizk and Tierney.

Stevie Frail’s side maintained their dominance after the interval and Twardzik deservedly extended their advantage, heading home from Joe Thomson’s delivery.

The Ibrox side were then reduced to 10 men when Dylan Dykes saw red for a late tackle on Tierney.

And their misery was compounded in the closing minutes as Jamie Lindsay, Liam Henderson and Aidan Nesbitt added further counters to seal a remarkable result.

There was only change from the team who earned an impressive draw away to Everton in the English Premier League International Cup last week as Tierney replaced Paul George in the starting XI.

And the Bhoys, watched by Ronny Deila, the first-team coaching staff and captain Scott Brown, made a positive start in freezing conditions, pushing the hosts back and dictating possession.

Full-backs Calum Waters and Darnell Fisher were prominent in the opening exchanges, providing plenty of width as the visitors poured forward.

And it was through Fisher’s enterprise that the young Hoops had their first meaningful effort on goal. The defender’s cutback was only cleared as far as Twardzik, who lashed a shot wide from 20 yards.

Tierney then glanced a header over from Waters’ cross and Thomson had a penalty claim waved away when his shot struck a Rangers defender in the box.

Celtic’s relentless pressing had prohibited the Ibrox side from building any forward momentum, but against the run of play they made the breakthrough.

A long ball over the top was fastened on to by Hardie and the striker looked up and expertly lobbed Leo Fasan from an acute angle.

Hardie then came close twice in quick succession for Gordon Durie’s side as the young Hoops took several minutes to recover from that setback.

But they soon resumed the offensive as goalkeeper Liam Kelly became a busier presence between the sticks for the hosts.

After making a comfortable save from Thomson’s header, he had to show good reflexes to push Paul McMullan’s shot to safety.

When he was beaten by McMullan’s rasping drive moments later, the post came to his rescue. But there was nothing he could as Frail’s side deservedly levelled the match in their next attack.

Thomson made a purposeful burst through the middle, before finding Tierney on the left. He teed-up Twardizk and his swerving shot from 25 yards flew in beyond the statuesque Kelly.

Incredibly, 60 seconds later, the young Celts completed the turnaround as Tierney determinedly drove into the box and rounded Kelly. Although his first attempt was blocked, he reached the rebound and made no mistake.

McMullan almost added number three when he fired inches past the post after a flowing move down the left, before he and Tierney had further efforts blocked in the box by an increasingly desperate Rangers rearguard.

However, Celtic were given a reminder of how slender their lead was on the stroke of half-time when Dylan Dykes blasted over after Fasan was unable to make the catch from a corner.

Perhaps mindful of this, the Bhoys burst out of the blocks after the restart and McMullan could have made it 3-1 inside the first 60 seconds as he controlled a cross from the left and evaded Kelly’s attentions. But he could only find the side-netting.

It was one-way traffic as the away side forced a succession of corners. In the 52nd minute, Thomson embarked on an incisive run before picking out Tierney, whose low shot was net-bound until Luca Gasparatto’s goal-line clearance.

And Thomson was again the provider as goal number three finally arrived. Following a sweeping attack down the right, the midfielder picked out Twardzik and he headed home.

As Celtic continued to dominate possession, the hosts’ frustrations boiled over on the hour-mark as Dykes received his marching orders for a rash challenge on Tierney.

The champions were far from finished, however, as Thomson flashed an angled shot wide and Twardzik tested Kelly from distance.

And they inflicted further punishment in the closing stages. Lindsay slotted home after being found by Twardzik, before Henderson knocked in the rebound from Twardzik’s shot.

And substitute Nesbitt sealed a memorable victory deep into added time, bundling in from close range after a melee in the box.

CELTIC (4-2-3-1) Fasan; Fisher (Breslin 46), O’Connell, Findlay, Waters; Lindsay, Twardzik; Thomson, Henderson, Tierney (Nesbitt 72); McMullan.
Not Used: Hart, Kelleher, George, McCart
