What is interesting is the fact they have 50 development staff. That's a hell of a commitment, but then it clearly is working.

Not that I'm arguing for having numbers for the sake of it, but clearly specialisation (and giving every youth group access to a range of coaches) is paying dividends for Southampton.

Frail or Delia are not giving youth a chance which reflects in Scotland u19 squad announcement today with only 1 Celtic player in the squad. Very disappointing for a club the size of Celtic

We usually have the majority of that squad and they all go nowhere anyway.

My son has disabilities so unlikely he will ever be "good enough" to play but that doesn't stop us supporting and we do have friends who's son has played for the development team.

I'd cut Deila some slack right now, he is still getting to grips with the first team squad but I do expect the younger players will get more opportunities in the months ahead.

Henderson & Fisher would be the main two I think are capable of holding down a regular place, Fisher has only just come back from injury.

 id try to feature Fisher as much as possible as i think he will be the main back up to Lustig next season after Matthews is sold to Swansea during the summer

I understand the manager is under pressure but Henderson has not had a look in this season. O'Connell in and out. Yet no John Herron, Twardzik or Finlay surely some could be given a run out when winning games 6-0?

Given that they weren't on the bench, I don't think that Ronny, even though he apparently has a clear vision, isn't psychic enough to foresee a 6-0 win and put them in the squad.

At this point in time, Deila needs to focus on the first team, and the pressure he has been under the past few months wouldn't have been a good atmosphere for young players.

I think you're being a bit melodramatic about the youth players not getting a chance.

As you say, he has given O'Connell a run out in games (in fact, he brought him on in an important match against Zagreb iirc) and has regularly played McGregor this season. It might also be fairly argued that some of those you mention aren't good enough. Twardzik certainly isn't.

I'm sure Deila will look to include more youths as they develop and if they prove to be good enough to push for a place.

I find it hard to understand that Deila persists with McGregor despite some really poor performances when that sort of role is perfect for bleeding other youngsters into the first team. Twardzik is never a left back. He's an attack minded midfielder. He could easily fill in where McGregor is playing just now. He might not be great but its not about him particularly as I'm sure there are other youngsters at the club who could also do a job in that sort of role. The system and style Deila utilises should be suited to the abundance of not box to box midfielders not quite strikers we bring through our system.

He's been hooked off the past few games & was benched for the game against ICT there. I think the penny has just dropped with Deila (well, hopefully).

I'd like to see Henderson getting the odd run out though. Darnell Fisher has been mentioned in this thread, I think he'll struggle to get game time given that RB is probably our strongest area.

Henderson looks a player to me. He seems suited to playing where Johansen is currently getting a game so might not get many starts but you'd think he might get some game time. Fisher, imo, had a couple of decent performances then faded. He didn't really do much wrong but nothing to say he deserves chances in the team. Especially when Mathews and Lustig are the ages they are. Lustig is approaching what should be his peak years and Mathews is only a couple of years older than Fisher.

Agree on Henderson. Saw a video of his performance with the development side against Motherwell recently and it looks all too easy for him at that level. I'd like to see him out on loan if he's not going to feature this season. Expect his chance will come though.

I think McGregor simply came back fitter than most due not being in the wind down portion of our season last year (from what January onwards) which gave him a leg up. He then scored consistently through the first 6 weeks. That kept him in the side longer than it should off. Whether you think he's good enough or not (I don't see it personally) I think he's ill suited to playing on the wing.
