For me the purpose of the development squad is to create players for the CL qualifiers.
What about that other competition, the Champions League?
We'll buy those ones from Stromgodset.
 A system!

There is mention of a development agreement in this

SPFL Development League
New Victoria Park, Newtongrange
Tuesday, March 10, 2015

HEARTS...1
(Morrison 86)
CELTIC...3
(McMullan 46, Thomson 63, Lindsay 68)
SECOND-HALF goals from Paul McMullan, Joe Thomson and Jamie Lindsay saw Celtic’s Development Side record an dominant 3-1 victory away to Hearts to keep their title hopes alive.
The young Hoops should have been ahead at the break after controlling the opening 45 minutes and fashioning a number of good opportunities, but the rewards for their endeavours came quickly after the interval.
Within seconds of the restart, McMullan had fired them in front and Thomson’s close-range header made it 2-0 just beyond the hour-mark.
Jamie Lindsay rolled home a third goal shortly after and McMullan missed a penalty as the Bhoys cut open the home side at wll.
Although Callum Morrison grabbed a late consolation for the capital side, it couldn’t take the shine off a sparkling showing and well-deserved win for the champions.
Connor McManus made his first appearance since his long injury lay-off as Stevie Frail made four changes to the team that returned to winning ways against Ross County last Thursday.
Stuart Findlay and McMullan, on temporary moves at Dumbarton and Stenhousemuir, respectively, also resumed service for the Bhoys as part of the development loan agreement, while Lindsay returned in midfield. Jamie McCart, Mark Hill, Aidan McIlduff and Calvin Miller all dropped to the bench.
The young Celts made a bright start at New Victoria Park, playing with real authority as they pushed the home side deep into their own half, forcing several early corners.
From one of these set-pieces, Findlay almost had the first meaningful effort on goal as he left Jake Hutchings for dead with a sublime piece of skill on the byline but his shot was charged down.
Driven on by McManus, donning the captain’s armband on his return to the side, and Jamie Lindsay, the young Hoops continued to make all the running.
And after McMullan’s cross was only partially cleared, Thomson’s opportunist strike found the side-netting.
Hearts finally broke the siege as Nathan Flanagan shot straight at Leo Fasan – but the visitors soon had the home side on the back foot, forcing them into some desperate defending as Ian Smith and Angus Beith saw yellow.
The latter of those offences presented Lindsay with a chance to shoot from the edge of the box, the midfielder’s shot curling inches wide of the far post.
It was Lindsay who threatened again moments later as his rasping drive forced goalkeeper Jack Hamilton into a reaction save after Thomson has cushioned the ball into his path.
McMullan’s pace and trickery had given the Tynecastle side cause for concern and two piece of wonderful wing play on either flank, in which he left several defenders for dead, almost conjured up chances for Michael Duffy.
Hearts replied with a shot from Kevin McHattie, which found the side-netting, but the young Hoops finished the half strongly, fashioning three golden chances to take the lead.
First, McMullan’s pinpoint delivery was met by Jaison McGrath but the striker blasted over from close range, much to his frustration.
Calum Waters then picked out Thomson in the middle but the midfielder could only slice his final effort, before a last-ditch challenge from Liam Smith thwarted Thomson.
Frail’s side had failed to translate their dominance into goals but they took less than 60 seconds of the second half to finally break the deadlock.
Pouring forward straight from the kick off, Waters cut the ball back from the byline and McMullan steered a shot home via the underside of the bar.
This sparked the hosts into action but aside from a couple of dangerous crosses from Smith and Alistair Roy, Fasan was never really troubled.
Instead, it was the Bhoys who next found the net. After McMullan had caused problems in the box, McGrath dug out a cross from the right and Thomson’s diving header flew beyond Hamilton.
Within five minutes, they killed off the contest as Lindsay added number three. Celtic robbed Hearts of possession with some excellent pressing, causing a melee in the box. When the loose ball fell for the midfielder, he made no mistake.
McMullan spurned a chance to make it 4-0 from the penalty spot after he had been fouled in the box, sending his effort wide from 12 yards.
The young Hoops continued to play at a high tempo and controlling possession, always looking capable of creating more openings.
Jack Ross’ side did pull one back in the closing stages as Callum Morrison lashed home.
Frail’s side almost had the last word, though, as Mark Hill found Thomson with a delightful ball over the top but the youngster couldn’t get the ball under control.
CELTIC (4-2-3-1) Fasan; Breslin, Kelleher, Findlay, Waters; Lindsay, McManus (Hill 60); McMullan (Donnelly 82), Thomson, Duffy; McGrath (Miller 74)
Not Used: McCart, McCabe, Wardrop, McIlduff

Did someone on here not say that Celtic youth coaches still prefer to pick taller players. Looks like this fella backs that up and it's sad that it's true.

Motherwell colt Dom overcame Celtic height snub to stand tall
Scott Mullan

IT'S the kind of blow that could cut any ambitious, young footballer down to size...but Dom Thomas is determined to prove he can crack the big time.

The pint-sized 19-year-old winger is the latest talent to emerge from the Motherwell youth academy that has churned out stars such as James McFadden, Stephen Pearson and Jamie Murphy this millennium.

But Thomas has had to endure some heartbreaking growing pains after being told by Celtic he was too small to live his football dream.

Now, though, having been at Fir Park for five years, he is standing tall on his own merits under new boss Ian Baraclough.

After being handed his claret and amber debut on December 20 in the 1-0 win over St Mirren, Thomas has gone on to rack up a further seven first-team appearances.

It is a run of dazzling performances that have not gone unnoticed by his manager, with the Glasgow boy being rewarded with a new three-and-a-half year contract last week.

However, speaking exclusively to SportTimes, he explained how one key characteristic brought him to Fir Park at the age of 14.

"I'm delighted to have signed," said Thomas. "I feel that I'm at a good club with good people who will help me in my career.

"I came here from Celtic when I was 14, then I signed full-time when I was 16.

"Celtic actually stopped playing me when I got to under-14s because they said I was too small. That's when I asked to leave.

"They didn't want me to go, but I thought it was the right decision and I'm even more sure of it now. I played here, my height wasn't a problem and I'm starting to show now what I can do."

It is an experience that Thomas is keen to soak up every second of.

Just a few days before featuring in Motherwell's 1-1 draw against Kilmarnock on Saturday, where his quick feet and trickery caused the visitors all sorts of problems on the left wing, the teenager produced a stunning performance for the under-20s against Killie.

"During the week I scored two and got an assist so I was happy with that," said Thomas. "It's good to keep playing with the 20s. Obviously it keeps up your fitness and sharpness, and I'm always learning.

"I'd play every day if I could. I know it's my job, but I'd play for free. I'm lucky enough to be doing this as a living.

"A lot of people would give their right arm to be here. I'm delighted to be doing it."

Despite being one of many youngsters to be thrust into the Motherwell first-team, Thomas is the one who has been heralded by some fans as the most naturally-talented player to come through the ranks since McFadden a generation earlier.

It is an expectation which could hinder the development of many a player. Not this one, however.

"I take it all in my stride," he said. "I like it [being compared to McFadden] because obviously it puts pressure on me, which we need.

"The fans are really good with me and give you that extra bit of encouragement. You also have players that have come through the ranks.

"Guys like Stephen Pearson have been there and done it as a youngster at Motherwell and that helps me."

The rising stars of many other clubs may get carried away such a quick rise to prominence. But the wide man has not forgotten where he came from.

"I still do a bit to help the boys out," said Thomas. "They are all my pals and in the same position as me. I help out when I can.

"I clean the dressing rooms, clean the boots, tidy the place up. Nothing too hard. Just now and again! The coaches keep on my back to make sure I do it to help keep my feet on the ground."

Turning his attention to the man who gave him his break in the Motherwell first team, Thomas said of Baraclough: "The gaffer has been brilliant with me. I couldn't have asked for a better person to have got the manager's job.

"I was on the bench for a season under Stuart McCall, which was good experience. I enjoyed going away on trips and things with them as a young boy. Training with the first team as well really got me ready.

"I thanked Stuart for that as well, but I need to thank the gaffer for giving me that chance."

The Pin mentioned it. He does a lot of work with kids football and he said that they definitely still do it.

They picked a guy from my year at school for his height who was average with a ball at his feet.
