League position of development squad is irrelevant. Whether players in the squad are actually developing is the key.
absolutely. it should be that way but it rarely is. if we are still trailing behind towards the end of the season we will again play some more senior players instead which is completely pointless to me. henderson missed a few first team games at the end of the season when it was very likely he would have got a runout from the bench at least to play in the u20s the day before etc

thats one thing i liked about mon. as soon as mcgeady was in and around the first team that was it. he actually barely played for our u21s such was his promotion from u19s to u21s then almost straight into the first team squad

Scepovic on target as Celtic beat Falkirk

Stefan Scepovic and Calvin Miller were on target as Celtic’s development side beat Falkirk 2-0 at Cappielow.

Both goals came in the second half as the hoops stuck to their task while the Bairns defence struggled to cope with the pace and power of Celtic with Aleksandar Tonev particularly impressive on the left wing.

Three nights before the visit of Inter Milan Tonev, Scepovic, Liam Henderson and Callum McGregor were given the chance to impress with Ronny Deila and Kennedy watching from the stand

Tonev was the main threat to Falkirk but the Bairns defence, directed by Alan Maybury, was well drilled and caught Celtic offside a number of times in the first half.

The on-loan Bulgarian did have the ball in the net but the linesman had flagged for offside as soon as he received McGregor’s pass.

It was tough going for the hoops with Falkirk comfortable holding back as Celtic enjoyed the bulk of possession but created little in the way of scoring chances.

Towards the end of the first half Joe Thomson in the 37th minute and Tonev three minutes later got in behind the Falkirk defence but there was no takers when they sent the ball across goal.

At the start of the second half Michael Duffy and Miller replaced Henderson and McGregor with Jamie Lindsay missing a decent chance straight from the restart when he shot high over the bar from 15 yards out.

Eight minutes into the second half Miller came closer to the breakthrough but his shot from 20 yards bounced off the crossbar.

Celtic had to wait until the 62nd minute to open the scoring. Scepovic sent a great pass inside the Falkirk defence for Duffy to run onto, with just the keeper to beat he squared the ball to Miller who ran the ball into the net from 10 yards out.

Their first half exertions had clearly taken a toll on the Falkirk defence as they struggled to cope with the trickery of Tonev on the left while Scepovic, playing deeper to accommodate Miller showed a great eye for a pass.

In the 73rd minute Celtic’s superiority paid off when Scepovic headed powerfully across goalkeeper Graham Bowman from a perfectly drilled Tonev cross.

Five minutes from the final whistle Miller had the ball in the net from a Tonev cross but was denied his second goal by the offside flag.

CELTIC: Fasan; Fisher, Kelleher, McCart, Waters; Lindsay, Henderson (Duffy 46); Thomson, McGregor (Miiler 46), Tonev; Scepovic

SUBS: McCabe, McIlduff, Breslin, Hendry, Lafferty

Reading a book just now on Jock and the Quality St Gang.

That was my era, but my memory had been hazy before I read the book, which is excellent.

Jock continually played an evolving group against the Lions. The youngsters learnt from the Lions. The youngsters, together with the Lions played against other teams.

Jock arranged games on a regular basis against second division sides and the Quality St side and development side were doing fantastic. Celtic tried to create a team in the second division but were not allowed to do so, mainly by Partick Thistle.

The lesson was to look, learn, copy, master and create. Our guys did it. If we had kept the squad together we would have won cup 2/3 times easy. But.............

We had the players then. We do not just now. But maybe if we look back we can listen and learn.

Nothing is new, learning is an art, and it is not time dependent.

Sometimes, pause and reflect is required, as in life.

Calvin Miller's the young guy who was voted best in the world for his age by some blog a year or two ago isn't he?

I very much doubt he was ever that, but it's good to see he's continuing his development. From that article it looks like he's playing as a striker now as well ("Scepovic, playing deeper to accommodate Miller"), I'm sure he was a midfielder when that unlikely blog claim was made.

Mostly played wide I'm sure.
Could see him playing in any of the front three positions, think he could make it under Ronny.
He reminds me of Maloney.

I forgot about that, good to see he is still in the development side but if he was really that good we would have surely have seen him by now if he is over 15?

I've never seen him play myself but he's almost certainly not actually world class for his age (he's just turned 17), however it looks like he's doing alright. In fact to be in what is essentially our U21 side at 17 suggests he probably is a bit ahead of his peers. I doubt he'll even make the bench for the first team this season unless we have a rash of injuries, but he might get a pre-season game or two in the summer.

Seen him 2 or 3 times in the Development Squad this year and he has looked alright, but certainly not a standout. There are quite a few ahead of him in the pecking order at the moment. Hopefully he will push on under Ronnie's tutelage.

Why are tricky or talented players in this country invariably played out wide? Probably more effective going through the middle. Hope a few of the youngsters can make the grade.

I think there's a lingering belief that any sort of fancy footwork belongs on the wing. There's definitely also a premium placed on the legendary "dig" when playing in the centre of the park. Scottish football will catch up with the rest of the world eventually I'm sure.
