Regarding the big guys at youth levels....Hibs probably have the biggest youths going, last season they were swapping them up & down to suit whichever side had the hardest games.

Delighted to see the return of Willie McStay
Just to be clear, Willie McStay is already at the Club. His current role is (I believe) Youth Development Officer. He was overseeing the trial period of a guy from Derry City (?) at Lennoxtown a few weeks ago, and was mentioned in a few papers speaking about the player. I assume this news about him becoming 'Head Of...' suggests a promotion rather than him rejoining the Club.

Also - re Hibs, they actually ran 2 youth sides last year, with the younger one playing as 'Hibernian EOS' in the East of Scotland senior league. Berwick's reserve team were also in that league. I suggested on here, that it showed a precedent that Celtic could follow, and push to have our youth players (or Development squad) playing within the SFA pyramid (the East of Scotland League feeds into the Lowland League within the SFA structure). The current Development League goes some way to addressing the problems we had getting games for our fringe players.

Development Squad are involved in a prestigious 5s tournament in Germany this weekend.

Live streams will be available here:

http://mercedes-benz-junior-cup.de/en/
We lost every single game in this tourney.

Why?

It seems that although we destroyed Dundee Utd last week the same old story applies that we are the best in Scotland but are left behind badly in European standards.

That makes depressing reading.

Why are Hamilton so far ahead of us in developing youth despite having a far lesser budget?

That's despite us poaching half a dozen players from their ranks in recent years.

 It's genius

I know nothing about our current youth set up but is winning a youth league really the main priority? Is it the best barrometer of success of our youth system?

The idea of Scotland having a B League or allowing teams to put reserve/developmental teams in the lower divisions pops up all the time in KDS, with the examples - positive or negative - of Spain and Portugal often cited, So this article might of interest.

Beat Newcastle 3-1 today, all goals scored by the two trialists. Is one of them the young fella from Ireland?

Trialist Michael Duffy nets twice in Celtic bounce game win over Newcastle
STV
8 January 2015 18:10 GMT

Michael Duffy scored twice for Celtic in a bounce game win over Newcastle United's development squad, as the Derry City forward continues his trial with the Parkhead club.

While Ronny Deila's senior side are currently in Gran Canaria on a 12-day winter break, the Hoops' under 20s won 3-1 in a closed-doors game at the Magpies' training ground.

Duffy bagged a double in the win, which saw Dutch international goalkeeper Tim Krul feature for a otherwise second-string Newcastle side.

Speaking to STV about his hopes of winning a deal earlier this week, the Derry City forward said: "It feels good, I'm looking forward to it, to training and playing in a match.

"So far I've done well but hopefully I can prove myself again. I haven't really spoken to the manager so I will just see how it goes."

The 20-year-old spent a week training with the Scottish champions in December and impressed enough to earn a second trial spell with the Hoops.

The fact that they flopped in a 6 a side tournament suggests our technical standards are poor and we do indeed get big kids to win 11 a side games.

League position of development squad is irrelevant. Whether players in the squad are actually developing is the key. Barcelona - although not bringing through too many players from the cantera in the last couple seasons - don't give a hoot for results and league placements of any of their teams, other than the first team. That's the only approach that makes sense to me. Not dancing around the room when the youths win the Glasgow Cup personally, much happier to see one young player come through and make the grade in the first team.
