Callum's really effective when we have the ball, attacking. His movement is excellent, very good at angles.
He is much less effective when we lose possession. I would imagine this is the part of the game he needs to improve most.

Quoting limited to 3 levels deep

 :ffs:

football is not complicated, if you think mcgregor is a player who is always looking to move into space to receive a pass then you are either hard of sight, or just don't know what you are talking about. Scottish football fans can be a bit blinkered sometimes. It not all kick and rush these days if you want to compete with the best. McGregor is still young be he seems to be lacking a very basic aspect of his game

Moving the ball on and then moving into space to receive a pass is exactly what McGregor does :ponder:
It is something he does quite well as evidenced by his goal at Fir Park to get us back into the game.

He's useful in the squad, seems to be coming onto a game, and is homegrown.
Stick!

His passing and movement when we have the ball is the strongest part of his game. It was quite refreshing when he transitioned into central midfield last season after months of Bitton and Johansen who were robotic in comparison.

Good at finding space and moving the ball quickly. Bad at tracking back, one of those players who looks busy a la Johansen. I like him but we need better if we want last 16.

Definitely getting better under Rodgers, who seems to quite like him.

Every great team needs reliable stand-in players who are happy to play that role and will always give their all.

At Man United, Ferguson knew he could rely on Phil Neville, Darren Fletcher, John O'Shea, Wes Brown, Park Ji Sung etc and these guys always played a massive role in title winning and CL winning squads despite being nowhere near the quality of their star players. I see McGregor filling that role for us over his career.
Disagree with Fletcher being on that list. He had sufficient ability to be crucial as a defensive midfielder thoughout the 08 champions league winning season for United. In his role, I'd argue he was one of the best in Europe for 2-3 years.

Deserved that goal, and it was a very good finish. I've never been a big fan but he is a quality squad player, great attitude.

That first touch to take a pass at pace and change the direction 90 degrees and carry it bang into the middle of open space was sublime.

What about in terms of:

"Good player, not the best but will always do you a job kind of guy"

Was this how Grant was viewed back in the day? Or was he genuinely good for that period

Probably about right but you'll never get a good word about Peter Grant on here, some comments I've read over the years about him are hunnish.

Grant had aggression, McGregor's much better technically and a very intelligent player.

nothing like him, Grant couldn't lace his boots, Callum also doesn't have the aggression in his game Grant had

I was one of his biggest critics when he first came into the team, but he's now a player I really like.

The perfect squad player. Great attitude, always on the move, never stands and admires a pass and always makes himself available.

We need players like him who can do a good job when needed.

to me he is not the standard we need to really push on but a very useful domestic squad player to have and has improved more than i thought he could

Tidy wee player who seems to be getting better and better.
Rarely gives the ball away, and would run through a brick wall for the team.
Might not be the 'Champions League' quality the support craves for right now, but well capable of filling in that role in domestic competition, and given time/games could yet make his mark in the CL.

McGregor <-> Grant ? Get real.
McGregor has way more skill and composure than Pointer ever had.
Without the OTT aggression, though just as committed to the cause.
