I'd like to see him get a run of games this season before completely discarding him.

He's not improved since his decent start at the beginning of last season. In fact he's gone into reverse.

We're well off for midfielders, and as long as most of them are fit or not suspended, I can't see him getting many appearances this season, other than as a sub when the game's won.

Broke up good moves last night by running backwards. Kept cutting in on his left except for one good move where he cut down the line on is right. I don't think he's good enough. Shame cos I thought he could have been a good player for us.

I think he's the patsy in a long con by Peter Lawwell. He'll be on the phone to Middlesbrough or Brentford at the end of the season faux-reluctantly accepting a £2.5m bid for Callum McGregor, the multiple medal-laden winger with loads of appearances for us under his belt. Brentford phone back after McGregor has been mince for 10 games - but Lawwell's phone is disconnected. They knock on the door of Celtic Park but are told by an elderly caretaker that no, a Peter Lawwell doesn't work there sonny. Sorry there's no one there of that name but would they like to take the tour?

Given the likes of Forrest or Armstrong can't play 2 games in a row or that GMS looks out of touch this weather, I would suggest any of those 3 at any given time.

Obviously a fully fit Armstrong would be my 1st choice every time, but.....

Forrest has just started against Ajax and Dundee (and came on as a sub last night) so that looks as if no longer the case.

And on top of that, there's still Rogic, Allan (Who from reports is a manager picked signing), Johansen, Commons.

He's 8th choice for the 3 attacking midfield postions and that seems about right to me. 10th once Christie and Henderson come back, assuming we don't lose any players.

Why?

He was 22, home grown, brought through the youth system, been away on loan and done well, come back and started the season quite well. I also think it was maybe a bit of an incentive/marker for others around the club. Here's what you can achieve if you are committed and go about things the right way.

Also, he broke his ankle towards the end of last season so I assume he's behind everyone else in terms of fitness. Last night was his first start I think, maybe second this season. He might never be good enough for the week in week out but he's better than a lot of people are willing to accept.

Someone said its like having a Hibs player in the hoops...what like Scott Allan? You couldn't make some of this stuff up.
:ffs:
Not sure what's so unbelievable about what I've said.

He's unlikely to be a regular starter but if signing guys like Allan then McGregor certainly isn't any worse.

You think it's ok to to give a squad player - your words- a five year deal when it's evident he's not good enough?

McGregor has had a chance to prove himself - Allan hasn't, and the fact he came from Hibs means nothing.

The fact he's 22, home grown, etc etc doesn't mean a thing if he isn't good enough which he isn't.

As others have stated there are about 5 or 6 players in front of him - giving 5 year deals to fringe players is ludicrous.

Scott Allan is a better player than McGregor. So was Paul McGowan a few years ago when Lennon gave him his new contract ( equally as stupid as the one handed out to McGregor after a few games of average performances that happened to result in a few goals )

If we were giving a player a new deal when he wasn't good enough to be even a squad player then that'd be a bit daft, yes.

However, my point is that he is good enough to be a squad player at Celtic, so it's not really daft to give him a new deal.

My reason for bringing Allan into the conversation was because someone mention McGregor "playing like a Hibs player in the hoops." Erm...? Like the boy we just signed from Hibs?

If you think he isn't good enough to be at Celtic at all then fair enough. I think he is good enough to make up part of the squad.

Forrest may have started but he was non existent against Ajax!

I wouldn't speak too soon on any other aspect of his general fitness. There is nothing from the past 4 years to indicate otherwise.

Getting on a bit
[ * * * * * * * * * * ]
RD seemed to rate him at the start of least season, he scored a couple of goals, but for a wide player/ attacking midfielder, he isn't very fast or skilful and his passing/crossing are poor. Easily knocked off the ball as well. He doesn't really seem to have any strong points in his game at all. He should be playing for somebody like Motherwell or Kilmarnock.

Think a lot of people are being harsh.

I think this is a big season for him and he needs to work his socks off to get a first team place our he will be gone.

Let's support him until that time comes?

A poor man's Ross Wallace.
That is an insult to Ross Wallace. Ross Wallace of his debut season would get a regular game for us and we'd think we were into a winner given he could beat a man, cross the ball and hit a decent set piece. Other not good enough youths like Jamie Smith would get a regular game for us nowadays as well. This is what concerns me about our youth setup. We are spending more money on it, often buying players from teams like Hamilton, and have put a system in place that was supposed to make the youth players better but the players are struggling to get game time ahead of what has to be our worst squad in decades.
