He's fine as cover at domestic level but he shouldn't be starting games in Europe. He seems to be getting picked because he might cover lots of ground but I didn't notice him cover much tonight.

We need a proper central midfielder in before the window closes.
He makes himself looks busy but that is not good enough - How many actual tackles does he put in? Invariably when we lose a goal he backtracks just far enough to stand on the edge of the box and watch it.

He will be the one who drops out (and deservedly so now) when the new midfielder comes in.
This x10.

He makes so many pointless runs and presses in the wrong areas.

Better after he came on yesterday. Beforehand the passing was ponderous and often backward but he was picking it up and spreading about nicely.

He really isn't the best but his style of play fits really well with what Rodgers is trying to do. A similar but stronger and smarter player would be a great signing.

Not as good a player as Bitton, but the latter is so infuriatingly lackadaisical.

Looks like we aren't signing another central midfielder, which means this is a huge 4/5 months for Callum. He has a chance to stake a claim for a starting spot.

I know he's not everyone's cup of tea by any means, but there's something about the way he moves the ball and looks for the ball which I really like. Really needs to work on the defensive side of his game but he has a chance to win the manager over.

Big season. You've proven us wrong once before... Time to do it again, I suppose.

The next game might be a bit different.

Good enough for domestic games but seeing as we've a lot of CB's I'd play one of them in MF for the CL games. Atm we're giving very little protection to our defence from MF.

Now the transfer window has closed we're left with Brown, Bitton, Ajer and McGregor for the central midfield spots (I'm not even counting the guy with the greatest hair in the team). What a shampooshow. We were crying out for someone who could read the game, tackle and pass the ball, and this is what we have. McGregor couldn't track a parcel on yodel.com furfuxake.

I hope to Christ that Ajer is good.

Considering retirement

Think the consensus is that when played in a midfield position McGregor has shown up well in many/most domestic games over a decent period, but has really toiled (like the rest of the midfield in all fairness) in European games, particularly away from home.

Of course people expected an upgrade for the here and now, given the size of the task awaiting in the Champions League, and the money we'll receive.

Sadly, I can only see the pattern continuing with McGregor. Will be able to step up a lot of the time in the SPFL, but likely to be found severely wanting in Europe.

It goes without saying, but Rodgers really needs to stitch together a formula that doesn't leave us heavily exposed in the huge games that are coming up. In fairness, that would also have been the case if we'd signed two additional midfielders of some repute.

He won't though.

He will do it once we are getting murdered and by then it may be too late.

I'd rather he got things right to begin with during these games away from home.

I'm a fan of Callum's and I think he gets a very hard and often unjustified time from many fans, he's always avilable for a pass, he never hides, works his socks off and can chip in with goals, he still has plenty to learn but like Griffiths he seems to have that steely self belief and self confidence about him that will see him do all he can to make if here, whether he does or doesn't time will tell but I don't think he merits anywhere near the criticism levied at him, some almost wish him to fail so they can be proven right, it just doesn't add up.

Many people will say "he's good enough for the SPFL but not good enough for Europe"...and that at the moment maybe true but the only way he'll get better is by playing in that environment, if he plays against the quaiity of opposition we have in our CL group there is no doubt he'll learn a few lessons, if he can take that on board he can hopefully add to his game, Rome wasn't built in a day and good midfielders don't just develop into good midfielders in less than a year, remember up until this January McGregor was used mainly as one of the 3 behind the striker.

There's very little we can do right now to alter the fact we will probably need him during the course of these games and like many of his detractors point out, he actually does more than enough in Scotland to merit a squad selection for these big games, I don't see the problem in supporting the lad and looking for him to develop rather than fail.

Is the correct answer.

I found it funny that when we didn't sign a midfielder everyone rushed to the Callum McGregor thread. Why not the Stuart Armstrog thread for example?

I like how he plays but he needs to do it better at times. Can he keep improving? I don't know but I reckon he's done enough to merit a chance at least.

We need to remember that McGregor started out as a winger a couple of seasons ago and scored a few goals in his first starts. RD moved him into the middle because he is more mobile than any of our other midfielders, always on the move and well balanced. He is a good support player from there, probing at defences and willing to show himself for one-twos around the box. He is not a ball winner but nobody has ever suggested that he is and it is unfair to slate him for his defensive weaknesses. There should be 5/6 guys behind him to do that job. Nowadays, he doesn't get many goals. Indeed, not many shots that I can see but we are not short of goals at the moment. If he plays in midfield alongside Brown, then Scott has to play the DM role

Because it looks like Armstrong will play no part.

He's been utterly found out.

McGregor is a tidy enough wee player, but really weak defensively which will see him shown up against half-decent opposition.
