I don't think he's a million miles away from being our best midfielder, I really enjoy watching him play. Callum's got an artistry about him the others don't have, quick passing and ball retention excellent yet knows when to be direct, goals looking more and more likely.
He's an unorthodox midfielder to see produced in Scotland, can't think of anyone remotely similar and that perhaps explains why some have taken a while to appreciate his quality. what about when he doesn't have the ball?

what about when he doesn't have the ball? It's an area he could and will improve but we have ball winners there for a reason. His positives far outweigh that issue, his covering can be swift. What about the areas I discussed, what's your thoughts?

Insanely criminal and damning for Scottish international football that he doesn't make their squad.

I still think if everyone is fit then he's a bench warmer but he's a good player to have in the squad and can be trusted to do a job when called upon.

Deserves all the credit he is getting. I like him a lot even if he does have the odd poor game.
Happy that a youth product is proving me and many others wrong. Now if you excuse me I'm away to wipe yoke from my beek.

Well there's not a huge gulf between starter and bench warmer as we have a reasonably high level of midfield throughout, down to Armstrong who came on to a game for a good few months and Nir who has to be commended for his commitment to the club despite not having any guarantees. For me Callum looks as though he has more to his game, he looks like the one capable of running the show, week in, week out. Back to back special finishes vs the zombies last year illustrated his bottle and quality.

Mark Fotheringham on McGregor from March, wee mention for Tommy Burns in there.
Spoiler: click to toggle Tim Sherwood once slapped a staggering £60 million price tag on England wonder kid Jack Grealish. But Mark Fotheringham insists the Aston Villa starlet couldn’t hold a candle to the real Bhoy wonder Callum McGregor.
McGregor is just one game away from making his 100th appearances for Celtic less than four years after making his Hoops debut. The 23-year-old midfield star has come a long way since the youngster Fotheringham played alongside during a loan spell at Notts County. Grealish had also been sent to the modest surroundings of Meadow Lane to gain first team experience as he looked to reach the top. There was plenty of hype surrounding the Villa kid and he stood out when he arrived for training every morning dressed in designer clobber.
But when it came to talent Fotheringham says there was only one winner and that’s why he believes McGregor will have has earned his century milestone. McGregor, who made his debut in a Champions League qualifier against KR Reykjavik, could make his 100th appearance against Fotheringham’s hometown club Dundee when Brendan Rodgers takes his side to Dens Park on Sunday. Fotheringham was Celtic’s youngest ever player when he made his debut at the age of just 16 in 2000 but featured just twice more so he knows what an achievement it will be for McGregor.
And he reckons there is so much more to come from the Hoops ace who he rates even better than current midfield man of the moment Stuart Armstrong. Fotheringham, 33, said: “It would be great to see Callum reach 100 appearances for Celtic and if he keeps doing what he is doing then I’m sure he’ll make another 200 or 300. “I first met him at Notts County and we hit it off right away. I didn’t really know him but he became like a little brother to me. When a Scottish player joins you in England then it’s a natural thing to take care of them.
“Jack Grealish was actually on loan at Meadow Lane at the same time and Callum outshone him and he’s been touted for England and rated at millions of pounds. “And if that’s the sort of price tag on Jack’s head then I would hate to hazard a guess what Callum would be worth. It would be at least the same anyway. “I used to sit in the midfield with Jack and Callum at either side of me. They were two very big talents but for me Callum was always going to have the bigger future and I still believe that. “I said to Callum he had everything you look for in a Celtic player. I thought he could be a great ambassador for the club. He’s a Glasgow boy and had an aura and certain standards about him that are instilled into you in the Celtic Family. “It was little things at Celtic such as being clean shaven and dressed smartly but he wasn’t flash. Jack Grealish would arrive head to toe in Louis Vitton and Callum would just come in with a wee pair of Converse and his Zara top on.
“In my experience the really top players are incredibly humble and that’s Callum. He’s from a great family. I know his dad well now too and he sent up a Celtic baby top with ‘McGregor’ on the back when my boy Mason was born. “It wouldn’t matter if Callum was on £40,000 a week or £400 he would be the same guy. His feet were always firmly on the ground and that’s what I loved about him. “Chris Kiwomya’s assistant at Notts County was a guy called Mick Jones and he had a friend at Celtic who recommended he should go and watched Jackson Irvine in a pre-season friendly against Brentford. “Mick went along but Callum stood out and scored in a 2-1 win. Mick called Celtic and asked me to text John Kennedy and we managed to get him on loan. “We were both schooled at Celtic and came through with Tommy Burns, God bless him, so we knew how to angle for the ball and pass and move in tight areas.
“It was a pleasure to play alongside him. He’s a fantastic player and if I’m being honest he’s a better player than Stuart Armstrong, as fantastic as he is, and if they put the same confidence in Callum then he could be Celtic’s best player. “He’s a phenomenal player and used to light up training at Notts County. For a young boy to come into England’s League One isn’t easy but he scored a barrowload of goals. “The thing with Callum is that he can score goals. He’s ice cool and has a phenomenal left foot. He’s still young so he’s got time to develop and he’s working under the best in Brendan Rodgers and John Kennedy.” Fotheringham came through the ranks at Parkhead when it was much tougher for kids to make the first team but still says McGregor’s is a fantastic achievement. And as much as he would love to see him stay in Glasgow for the long haul he reckons he would be a huge hit in Germany where he has experience of playing and coaching.
Fotheringham said: “Having recently coached in Karlsruhe and played in Germany I would love him to go to the Bundesliga one day. I’m sure that league would suit him and a Wolfsburg, Bayer Leverkusen or Borussia Monchengladbach would be perfect. “I rave about him and told Felix Magath, who I played under at Fulham, about him. He’s a fantastic talent, the hottest property in Scottish football in my opinion. “It’s my biggest regret that I didn’t play more games and that’s why it’s phenomenal achievement for Callum to make 100 appearances, at his age, for a club the size of Celtic. “I replaced John Kennedy as the youngest debutant when I made my first appearance for Celtic under Kenny Dalglish. I then got a start under Martin O’Neill and he was keen to keep me. “But I was captain of Scotland Under-21s at the time and most of my team-mates had 150 games under their belt so I was desperate to play and asked to leave. I joined Dundee and went on to make a career for myself away from Parkhead.”

I think his only real problem is that he's not a great tackler which might leave us a bit exposed when he playing CM with Broony but not as much of an issue when he's in front of 2 CMs.

he still has the tendency for games to pass him by. A lot of people were creaming themselves after the midweek game in Norway. I thought most of the game passed him by until Griffiths came on and the game opened up.
I still think we have better options at the minute.

Terminology regards people creaming it etc. doesn't convince me you are ever going to fancy him as a starter, I've only ever really saw potential and quality in the player tempered by the requirement of time and patience to develop talent, Callum plays the game the way I enjoy watching it and I do believe there's much more to come.

He's improved immensely over the last 18 months and I'm happy to have him within the squad. I'm warming to him and it's refreshing to see another academy youngster come through and do well.
He's worthy of a place in this squad m(which is no mean feat) but if everyone is fit then he wouldn't start imo.

If Ntcham and Brown are behind him I think he'll score more goals than Armstrong did last season, if given an extended run that is. Think this could be one of the reasons for Ntcham's signing. Maintains the strong spine in the team while freeing up McGregor to play his natural game.
I don't really agree with the tackling point. How many tackles do players actually make these days, especially in the number-10(ish) role? The higher up in the game you look, players generally make fewer tackles. I think in the champions league in any given game the most any player makes is usually about 3, with some players making none at all.
It's more about positioning - a tackle tends to be made only because of a mistake - and being able to close down for 90 mins, which McGregor has shown he has the energy to do.

From Rodgers' point of view, McGregor is doing everything right. "He had a big season last year," the Celtic manager said. "He quietly goes about his work and is an outstanding player. We don't sing too many songs about him but he comes in and trains well every day and can play in different positions. "He was unfortunate not to have another couple of goals today and he is a top talent. I enjoy working with him. You can see the confidence in his game, he understands how we function and I think this will be another important season for him." http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/40837734
