"Wealthy individual in legitimate tax avoidance shocker"! Interesting to hear Daly's confrontation of Desmond outside CP at the Bayern game. If only some of our intrepid journalists could be so tenacious in relation to events in Govan. |

The tax avoidance of Dermot Desmond and other super-wealthy individuals is by no means a trivial matter; it is the right of a society to ask where its money is being taken, and journalists exist to carry out that duty. However, it is obvious that there is only a particular focus on Desmond because he is the majority shareholder of Celtic, and we know that even an indirect or tenuous link between any controversy and Celtic will be played up in the press because it attracts attention. It's extremely reductive with regards to a very serious issue. |

No he admitted at the end that nothing was illegal despite having a legal opinion which suggested that the Swiss might want more tax paid. Think the subtext was that he was accusing DD of being too Taigy or something not quite British! Oh that’s right Brenda herself uses tax havens so that would be quintessentially British I await with bated breath the bold Mark door stepping Glibby at the Bigotdome when the old “cold shoulder” kicks in

We can question individual or even corporate bbc motivations all day long but what the paradise papers clearly show is this world is full of already-rich people who think it's fine not to pay their taxes... it isn't fine, it's shameful (regardless of whether it can be cloaked in legality). Wasn't ok when the huns did it to cheat their way to titles and isn't ok when DD does it to bolster his own bank balance. |

The question being asked by most isn’t to do with legality or morality around tax affairs but it is everything to do with the BBC’s blatant attempt to drag our club into the scandal |

![]() If there's legitimate questions to ask of Dermot Desmond then lets have them asked. Whataboutery is a pathetic reaction. His connection with Celtic makes him a person of public interest. The point of the story is the shed a light on the lengths that the wealthy will go to avoid tax liabilities. If using an individual who is the major shareholder in the largest club in the country helps it make a story of greater interest to the public at large, by linking it to individuals whom they would already possess some knowledge of, then so be it. This issue is far larger than the Scottish media's disdain for Celtic, and it is petty and parochial to bring that argument in here. |

And asking why the BBC's intrepid and courageous investigative journalists have not pursued Murray, King, Walter Smith and the very many EBT recipients (some of whom are employed by the BBC) about tens of millions of tax evasion with the same enthusiasm and vigour with which they have pursued a wee lassie who is an actress in Mrs Brown's Boys about £300k PS Not 'whataboutery' but about impartiality, honesty, integrity..... Because his connection with Celtic is what makes it a story of greater public interest, and is the reason why he is known to a chunk of the population at large. Even to those who don't know him, his connection to Celtic gives him an identity. It's not dragging Celtic into the scandal, it's putting a face on a story to give it greater relevance to people. |

For me this is a non story then. If he isn't breaking any laws it really shouldn't be part of some arbitrary morality investigation. You might not like the fact billionaires can use their clout to spread money here, there and everywhere to give themselves a smaller tax bill but the reality is, everyone from any walk of life would do the same if they could. Someone on 30k a year has to give a sizeable wedge of their living to the government. If they could find a legal way to pay less I wouldn't blame them so with that in mind where is the line drawn? How much tax should any one person pay? As I say it's entirely arbitrary. |

Just to point out, the paradise papers was shared with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists by the Suddeutsche Zeitung newspaper, based in Munich. Do those organisations have it in for us as well? |
