I've no idea of any of this, except that PL simply cannot be worth that amount of money. I'm not seeing his value. Maybe one day I will & it'll all become clear - but for now I can't see it. I'd be very glad, if Brendan has had a say in how things are structured - as I can see the benefit he has brought to the club. Maybe, we just don't know what goes on behind the scenes... |

Dermot Desmond is no schmuck. I doubt he'd be allowing high remuneration unless he felt he was getting value for money. Consider the difference between Ronny's salary and Brendan's. Would the extra money paid to BR be better spent on another player's salary or the manager? You might find a CEO you could pay £500k or more less than PL and divert that to player wages but what would that buy you and how would the club fare overall with the cheaper option? |

PL brought Ronny to the Club & continues to defend him. Poor example. Brendan has turned us around, not Lawell or Desmond. |

Hairytoes, my point is that while he's on a massive salary relative to what you and I earn the savings from brining in a cheaper CEO wouldn't make a massive difference to our playing squad but could impact the administration of the club overall significantly. Perhaps someone can do an equal or better job for less, I don't know. There's no harm in asking that question but if the answer is no then he is worth that kind of money. |

It almost seems like the board have taken on board the fans' criticisms of the bonus money Lawwell was walking away with year after year - despite a continuing worsening of the success on the pitch. We had an almost farcical situation whereby it was almost impossible for Lawwell not to trigger his bonus clause; and even if we had failed or qualify for the Champions League (or even failed to win the Scottish League - something that unbelievably because an outside possibility under Delia) then Lawwell would still trigger his bonus simply by selling off the best players at the club to a team in England (usually Southampton). But instead of doing the most logical thing - making the bonus triggers much more related to success on the pitch; they've instead hugely increased base salary and reduced bonus levels. Overall, it doesn't mean that Lawwell loses any money if the club continues to be successful on the pitch (in fact, it looks like his figure has gone up even more) but it means he still takes home a guaranteed increased base salary if thing aren't successful on the pitch. It'll be interesting to see what percentage of that bonus trigger is based on football success and how many is based on player sales' profits. It's still not outwith the realms of reality that he'll still trigger most of his bonus year after year, simply by selling off the best players any years we don't qualify for the CL (or, more worryingly, getting greedy as he has done in the past - and still sell off players, even after banking a years' CL money from the previous season). I imagine the only thing preventing Lawwell from selling off our best players and trying to replace them with cheap punts this season is that he has a manager who is strong enough to stand up against him. Lennon qualified for the last 16 of the CL and had the backbone of his side sold off the following season; while Delia was so far removed from ever even qualifying from the CL that any player remotely approach 'asset' status was quickly sold off. As long as Rodgers remains at Celtic, and has the ear of Dermot Desmond, Lawwell's influence on the playing staff side of things should hopefully be curtailed. But if/when Rodgers leaves - it seems like Lawwell is tucked in for the long-run now, so I really wouldn't be confident that a lesser manager would be able to prevent a creeping back in again of that influence from the accounting department into the playing staff side of things. It's hard to know what he brings is my point. He failed with his Ronnie project & set us back years, something he still defends when Brendan turned everything around for us. We'll experience the effects of the past few failures to build on progress, as our coefficient points tumble next season. MON & Lenny both left, with some criticism of lawell, Ronnie was his project. Apparently DD pulled rank & brought in Brendan, who has done well with limited investment in the squad. I don't know what lawell brings, but I think he looks after himself very well. |

The numbers are in the accounts. We have had significant investment in the squad relative to our means. I also think that irrespective of Brendans or Lawells wishes, a few players will be shipped out because the lure of easy money from England won't be resisted. It may be player or agent power but our players are too good for Scottish football. |

I have said for years that the bonus was never actually a bonus. It was paid year in, year out regardless of performance on and off the pitch. I have no idea why it was structured in such a way but this appears to vindicate the view it was never a bonus in the first place - he was guaranteed a certain sum whatever happened. |

Lawwell is not daft. He knows that BR is the biggest factor in Celtic's success and his future depends on a harmonious working relationship with the manager. So I don't think we will see him interfering in the playing side, as he might have been tempted to do with Ronnie as manager. He must be good at what he does or Desmond would not be paying him so handsomely. The thing is, it is all working very well at the moment and bringing the club great success, so I don't think it needs fixing. |

I'm not saying he is or isn't overpaid. I don't have knowledge of the industry standard and I really don't how much of his job is executing the board/main shareholders' strategy and how much input he himself has into formulating the strategies. I do know whether we pay a CEO £300k, £600 or £900k, the saved funds won't make much of an impact in the playing budget. With an alternative CEO would we have a lower turnover, that's the question you need to be asking. |

I think PL is a good moneyman, he's just the type whose feet need holding to the fire every now and again so he doesn't get too complacent counting his pennies and trying to turn us into a well-run, financially stable nothing club, like the owners of Arsenal. People say it isn't true, but I think we've seen what happens when he dickers too much with the footballing side of the club; we get a nice guy who gives inspirational corporate-type speeches in as manager. |

The remuneration committee don't operate in a vacuum. Their recommendations should be aligned with the structure and policy of the club, and the environment in which it operates. It would be quite a coincidence if this change in PL's package was entirely unrelated to the arrival of BR last year. Maybe it was as direct as Rodgers telling DD that the CEO should be judged on football stuff, or as indirect as a change in transfer policy caused by BR resulting in Lawwell's previous scheme was outdated. |
