If Lawwell is continually finding it too difficult to sign players then perhaps we need to find someone who can?
Lawwell said that his transfer failure in January 2009 would be written on his tombstone

It should have been on his P45.

hailhailceltic posted that BR wanted 2 new players in today and Lawwell failed to deliver. Fecked me off if true.

He was pissing about for weeks with the Sinclair transfer too.

Been a decent window but could have been much better if not for PL.
No-one on here knows a thing about what did or didn't happen behind the scenes today.

Rodgers next press conference will be interesting though.
The great thing about Rodgers is that he is a Celtic fan who is genuinely delighted to be here and when he says the board have supported him - I believe him. He is just three months into the job and so far, so good.
So is Neil Lennon. Did he come out and say he was disappointed in the 2013 summer transfer window ? No he didn't but I am reliably informed he was less than happy. Did Deila say anything publicly last summer about the failure to sign a left back and the lack of experience of those we did sign. No, but I am led to believe that was how he felt (although he has to take responsibility for Ciftci)

BR speaks to NL. I'm pretty sure that Lenny will have warned him about PL's shenanigans at this time of year.

After having delivered champions league football, I suspect that BR will be rather miffed at today's events. But i will be gobsmacked if he says anything publicly.

Spoiler: click to toggle

As I said in the transfer thread:

"Rodgers let Lawwell off the hook the other day by saying that if nobody else signed the club would still have done brilliantly for him.

Lawwell put cheque book away as soon as he said that, IMO.

If Rodgers had said: "The club has done brilliantly for us so far but if we could get one more quality signing over the line then that could make all the difference for the Champions League."

That would have piled the pressure on Lawwell to deliver."

It was a naive statement from my perspective.

We have no idea what went on behind the scenes but it would have been an almost perfect window had we gotten a first choice central midfielder. That said, for the first time in a while it seems like the board have bought exactly what the manager wanted.

It was naive. Rest assured he won't make that mistake again now he knows exactly who and what he's dealing with.

A bit fed up....again. Why on earth do Celtic rest on its laurels. Iam not asking us to go toe to toe with barca etc but a decent midfielder might have delivered 3rd spot. Think we're effed now!

I we had sold Simunovic we could have went into the CL group games on the back of a profitable transfer window yet having not addressed the main team issue many had identified.

It wouldnt have been a lawwell window without missing a glaring need in the team.

A good window overall in terms of improving the team & a better manager but that doesnt mean its ok to not get the midfielder we needed. If McCarthy was the long shot it must have been expected to be with his 60-70k wages there should have been a back up, if we were serious about addressing midfield...

Imagine away to FCB, Brown injured, McGregor and Bitton in the middle, Bitton doesnt fancy it (again) :twitch:

Hope this hasnt put Brendan off, if so I hope he has a word with DD and we get lawwell to eff.

This is my take on it.

I've heard, and read on here, from decent sources who suggested that since the appointment of the manager that demands from selling clubs and potential signings have been bordering on ridiculous.

As wee Fergus said 'don't pay £10m for a £5m player.'

I could easily believe that the demands from clubs and players alike have been ludicrous. They'll be looking at what average players go for down south and thinking that it wouldn't be the first time a club there has swooped in after our interest has gone public.

I find it hard to believe that BR is completely happy but I'd think he'll be fairly pleased. Hopefully there are some words being spoken and some explanations demanded.

Lyon here we come

There is an argument that as Rodgers is just in he hasn't had the chance to review our scouting policy hence the focus being on England.

However the manager said in May that he felt the squad was too big. The CEO has failed on that point.

I would argue (as many others have) that we could get another CEO for a LOT less

I agree we could get another CEO but not one that wind“s Sevconians up as much !
However that doesn“t get us out of the dilemma that the Board Policy seems to prevent us from taking that final step-up of buying a better quality midfielder to give us a chance to compete in CL for 3rd & qualify next year .
I was hoping that the attraction of CL football and some extra dosh in bank from Ticket Sales/CL money would have given us some wiggle room - I woke up this morning to look into my Xmas Sock and there were no Chocolate Coins ,just an effin Orange and Apple !
We have made progress but I was hoping for more ! :(

Pete will have seen sufficient player turnover to see his bonus ok. Don't you worry.

We could have signed Messi and some would be moaning that we didn't bring Neymar in with him. Squad bolstered by 5 first team starters and a manger who knows his arse from his elbow. We're already stronger by an off the scale factor. We'll get our centre mid, patience.

Rodgers said he couldn't fix the team in one window. so maybe the players we get in Jan were just not avaliable this time.

im happy with sinclair, kolo and dembele at least we didn't sign for the sake of signing like we usually do after champions league qualifaction

Yup, I'm not Lawell's biggest fan, but it's entirely possible that he DID go after another couple of targets and couldn't get them for perfectly good reasons.
If a club refuses to sell, or refuses to sell for a reasonable price, there's not much Lawell can do. Also, not every player, I imagine, would be prepared to play a season in Scotland for a half a dozen CL group games.

again a feeling of being let down when the transfer window shuts

anybody who has seen our 3 away ties in Europe this season can see we desperately needed some quality in midfield.

The away performances have went from embarrassing against Lincoln Red Imps to getting out of jail against Astana to abysmal against Hapeol

No doubt the squad we have is good enough for the SPL but I would also still be a bit worried in the goalscoring stakes if Griffiths went down with a medium to long term injury
