None of this elite, Super League, top 20 pi$h will matter to me anyway. They can keep their rancid money-grabbing ideas and stick them where the sun don't shine. Football's going to hell in a handcart and I can't wait.

I watch very, very little of both the EPL and the CL as it's sold it's soul. The ego-maniacs that are involved and the mediocre players that lift eye-watering amounts of money do nothing to excite me. Highly paid interchangeable mercenaries who flit between clubs depending on who pays most? It's just plain boring. No-one has any affiliation to these people. I find it impossible to warm to them.

Watching Celtic, or football in general, is a way for me to catch up wi' friends and enjoy a wee day out and have a couple o' beers. What we've seen at Anfield recently sums up what the average fan thinks. Hopefully there'll be a fan-backlash where some sort of normality will resume.

I'll always support Celtic wherever they play. To be as far away from 'the top table' would suit me fine.
Good post, just underlines how pointless the shock/horror we must qualify for the champions league every year brigades shouting has become ,like it or not we are to the rich powerbrokers in the sport an irrevelance in a very money orientated business that looks after their own
It's nothing to do with the power brokers. It's to do with fans wanting a different challenge and some entertainment, never mind the finances to improve the team.

Yes we are a wee piddly country but if you bring a Barcelona, AC Milan to Celtic Park you get 60000!! You also get every supporters club and Irish pub bursting at the seems. We also take a huge vocal following with us.Lets not forget Seville. We are, historically, a huge name with hugely recognised colours. We are a big draw. You wouldn't believe it at the moment though.

Anyway this is all bollocks and will be a very unlikely scenario.
We could get 160k at games and it would still be irrelevant.

It is all about TV audience/subscriptions and advertising revenue.
If dealing with viewimg figures in the domestic market (we're in the same market as the EPL teams) about the Champions League, then ours (and Deidco) were actually quite respectable in the CL compared to the English teams. If the European clubs take this as barometer for admittance to the "super league", then outside the top 4 of the EPL I'd fancy our chances of being admitted over most of the EPL.

Are you saying if fans of clubs from small countries with limited market ( viewing) potential want new challenges and better entertainment that they can influence the rights/contracts/wishes of multinational tv companies for a place at or near the top table ? that is not the way these guys operate , they are looking for maximum exposure , sponsorship and profit

Why is it irrelevent? You'd want a packed venue for atmosphere. We provide that home and away for big games. With the money we have available at the moment, I would ask you to go to any Irish pub or supporters club in the world and you will see them filled to the rafters when a big game is on. That's a huge TV audience right there and throw into the mix the high end opposition and TV figures go through the roof. Give us a slice of the the money and see us disappear over the hill. Believe it or not, we are very much still a household name and very recogniseable by our colours. It's a no brainer. It's also a lot of rubbish and will never happen although I'd love it if it does.

Celtic, Europe's elite. I like the sound of that

If we did get an invite to play in this top 20 thing, as opposed to being required to beat Malmo, Maribor or Legia to gain the chance of playing big clubs - what would the fans choose?

If the opportunity actually arose, for some strange reason.

I think I know what PL & the Club would choose.

Peter Lawwell is on the ECA Executive Board. He should be well aware of what the ECA is planning. That is very different from being in a position to directly influence things.

The nonsense spouted by Rummenigge and Agnelli is embarrassing. Given the clubs they represent it doesn't surprise me though. Agnelli heads a club that directly bought off referees not so long ago. That he is allowed anywhere near the decision making process is a total embarrassment to anyone with the interests of the game at heart. He fronts a truly horrible football club. His pronouncements are very much in keeping with that delusional mob.

The problems at FIFA provide the perfect smokescreen for the ECA to force changes through at UEFA, as it is a bit rudderless at present. Plenty of influence can be promised to Infantino in his bid to get elected as FIFA President by influential members of the ECA in return for a blank sheet of paper to reform a closed shop, automatic access Champions League, built for TV, built for viewers in Asia.

The overriding motive of the biggest clubs in the game are simply money and are therefore pretty sinister. Like they don't already have enough. No one appears willing or organised enough to attempt to resist their relentless pursuit of ever greater access, increased media values and cutting off a genuine route to the top table for clubs who win their national leagues. That link should never be broken and should never be dictated by the size of a media market.

As a sport, football needs to be a meritocracy, otherwise no matter how long it takes, people will eventually lose interest.

The locked out clubs in England, Spain and Italy have no leverage over the bigger clubs. Do you really think that Stoke vs WBA is sustainable without a Man Utd or Arsenal in the league? They can bitch and moan all they want about it, but they'll literally biting the hand that feeds them.

Your best bet to stop this is the big English clubs being content with the set up they have now, but Man Utd and Liverpool have been making noises for years about selling their rights separate and that doesn't fill me with confidence.

That being said, I'd be more worried about this if I was a small team in the EPL than I would be as Celtic. We're at least self-sufficient when it comes to our revenue. This is being discussed as a way to stop Stoke et al having more spending power than AC Milan.
Don't think WBA and Stoke. Think more Everton and Spurs. The teams on the cusp of the 'top 4' will rightly go rogue if Chelsea can theoretically finish 15th and still be rewarded with a Super League Place.

Funnily enough, I personally find AC Milan's sense of entitlement hilarious. They act like wee bitches despite the fact their whole operation was funded by 'unfair means'.

If Everton are taken over by new US owners, how many EPL sides will be stateside owned?

If you then add them to the other foreign owners of clubs, will the EPL be majority foreign owned?

Asking questions out loud, because if the EPL becomes US owner driven (supported by the other johnny foreigners) will they try and implement a non relegation/promotion set-up, like the rest of the major US sports 'franchises'?

As I say, just thinking out loud, but maybes they'd be prone to inviting the famous Glasgow Celtic on board, to represent the Scottish/Irish, Eastern Seaboard/Irish demographic?

One can but dream...

Outright,.... Villa, Liverpool,Man Utd and Sunderland.I think the majority Arsenal shareholder is also an American. Pretty sure the majority of EPL clubs are either foreign owned or the majority shareholders are foreign.
The second part of your question is unlikely imo.
Nice dream though.

Not sure how this goes with the "Europe's elite" angle...

I know this is football in the 21st century we're talking about but, eugh :boik:

The piece seems to be a combination of truisms (more money than we have now = tiny decrease in the gap between us and those with the obscene wealth) and some kind of advert for the betting company or the management of Celtic's commercial arm.

McCormick said that the Glasgow club’s UK fanbase is “comparative to a leading Premier League team but its income from broadcast rights and sponsorships is drastically lower".
And this muppet doesn't know the difference between "comparable" and "comparative".

I only just realised that Lawwell was the financial controller at Celtic in the early 90's before the takeover. That explains a lot.

Out of interest, why? We've had alcohol companies do it. Most of us who go to the games, would probably participate in a wee drink and a coupon.

It's an uncomfortable truth that gambling and alcohol companies are a necessary evil in modern day advertising.

We can't afford to be too choosy when it comes to securing the best deal possible from a commercial point of view. Indeed, we have been sponsored by alcohol companies for a long time without too much opposition, so a company like Dafabet ( who I have never heard of being a non gambling sort) shouldn't be too morally repugnant for the average supporter.
I have long criticised Lawwell for being parochial in his quest for decent sponsors, so it would be hypocritical of me to oppose this move, given it sounds as if it will be financially rewarding for Celtic, and also it finally drives a massive wedge between ourselves and any other local sides who may have benefitted financially from our prominence in recent years, so that is a realbonus.
Hopefully, it delivers what it suggests, and that is a financial package which dwarves what has gone before .

It will be interesting once this deal comes to an end, and if sevco manage to get promoted (and stay alive) if we revert back to those joint sponsorship deals.

While sitting on our moral high horse apparently.

Maybe we should get some really socially conscious name on our shirts, though we'd have to pay them as we couldn't possibly take money away from such an organisation. Sell Griffiths to pay for it and sit smug-faced watching Aberdeen lift the league trophy. Sounds like a plan.
