Celtic team home v Juventus, February 2013:

Forster

Lustig Ambrose K.Wilson Izaguirre

Brown Wanyama

Forrest Commons Mulgrew

Hooper

Potential Celtic team away v Ajax, 2 and a half years later:

Gordon

Janko Boyata Simunovic Mulgrew

Brown Bitton

Forrest Johansen Armstrong

Griffiths
It's a bit naughty just excluding players like Lustig when they're still here, no?

Gordon

Lustig Ambrose Simunovic Izaguirre

Brown Bitton

Forrest Johansen Armstrong

Griffiths

There's not a massive difference between the two sides when compared like that. We're missing a decent striker badly though.
I thought that was the point

Given the general consensus about Mulgrew and Commons' recent contribution you could argue we're stronger in a couple of positions at least. Clearly the striker is the issue.
That and the manager.

Not much between the 2 at all. Bald men and combs stuff.

It's also worth noting we were really shampoo in that game against Juve.
It's also worth noting we could only dream of the Last 16 of the Champions League.

Will there be a time where Griffiths is ever recognised as a good striker?

His all round game isn't as good as Hooper's but his goals to game ratio this season is excellent (9 in 12).

I agree we're lightweight elsewhere in the striking department but I think people are unfairly dismissive of Griffiths at times. He has been very good for us.

Not the thread for that argument, but given the games in this theoretical comparison are one where we lost 3-0 and a game we've yet to play, I'm a bit more positive about the one that hasn't happened yet. :)

People criticising Lawwell for the club's transfer strategy should remember that the board determines policy, not him (although he will advise of market conditions, etc.)... he is an employee, albeit one who is very well rewarded.
Could people please, please, please stop repeating this complete and utter pish that all Lawwell is doing for his £1m a year is following instruction. FFS the tea lady could do that. Where do you get this nonsense? Peter Lawwell is the CEO of the business and driver of this 'strategy'. That is what he is employed to do - run the business. Do you think Tesco shareholders sit at every board meeting and tell the CEO how they want their business run? In the not too distant past Dermot Desmond funded Martin O'Neill in buying Sutton, Thompson, Valgaeran, Lennon, Hartson, Balde etc. We were OK with massive wage deals for Craig Bellamy and Juninho who, at the time, were among the highest earners in Britain. The end of O'Neill saw the end of this policy. Smart guy Lawwell thought he had a different, more profitable way and installed himself as overseer. I honestly can't listen to any more of this nonsense - that joker is at the heart of this period of cost cutting. GTF Lawwell.
Well put Murphio.

Maybe in general, but most of the concern/anger tonight comes from the fact that if he gets injured or suspended we are effed!

He's been decent. That's it. He's not as good a player as Hooper and in any Celtic side over the last 20 years he wouldn't have been near a starting spot.

That ratio is absolutely top class and over the first 12 games of a season I'd wager that Henrik's probably the only striker we've had in the last 15 years who has equalled or bettered that.
I thought it was actually more than 9 but I'll take your word for it.

He scored 8 goals, hasn't he ?

Stokes had a good run in 2011 after the Kilmarnock miracle. 8 goals in 8 games, including two in the EL.

Well said Murphio.

We are a club in decline, not through the hopes and dreams of the support but through lack of effort from our lord and masters. We have drifted into the twilight zone of loans and cheap deals which are unbefitting of a club of our stature. Yes, we live in a country with poor TV revenue but the lack of ambition and the drift towards making a profit, so as not too end up like our poor neighbours is growing more tiresome than Cameron's austerity shampooe.

Compared to Tesco, Celtic is small beer; but in any organisation, the board determines policy, not the CEO. The board hires and fires the CEO, and reviews his performances... and will set bonus levels. Some on here seem to think he is Murrayesque in lining his pockets... do you honestly believe guys like Dermot Desmond would allow that to happen? If he is interfering in football matters, then that is a different discussion altogether.

FWIW, I believe the board are content to continue to follow the current fiscal approach.

The small TV revenues were traditionally offset by massive match day revenues.

This regime has overseen a drastic reduction in attendances in the last few years.

Another avenue is prize monies in Europe.

This regime has overseen failures in the Champions League to the tune of £35m over the last two years due to their risk adverse policies.

I don't know where folk are going with all this 'ronny will have been bound and gagged and forced to sign off on those comments'. He speaks some utter shampoo at times, his recent comments re Boyata indicate as much(For balance he also sometimes speaks sense). At the end of the day Ronny has come to Celtic from a team where he had a fraction of the budget and resources that he has here and he has been handed oppertunities as a manager that he could only have dreamed of while trying to drag Stromsgodset from the lower half of the Norwegian League. The facts are that we are now going into the season with a very inexperienced back four and a forward line that is painfully thin, a combination of the board and the manager bear responsibility for that and they should both be under pressure with regards to how we perform this year.

Which begats which though ?

Lesser quality players leads to lower attendances or vice versa ?

Loss of funds/credit results in poor European performance or vice versa ?

What happened to rangers certainly had an effect in that regard as well.

Agreed, both ronny and collins need to step back. John Collins in particular should know the downfalls of speaking to the Scottish press. Personally I much prefered Wim Jansens aproach to to the press. Speak to them on a Friday lunchtime and therteafter the game.

No they don't - utter rubbish. The CEO is answerable to the board but that person is paid to come up with a strategy to make the business profitable first and foremost and sustainable in the long term. Lawwell may be achieving the former but not the latter. This nonsense that poor Peter is being paid £1m a year to simply dot the i's and cross the t's on a strategy for which he has no say is incredibly naive. Where does it come from? It is utter, utter bollocks. Celtic engaged on a u-turn in policy around 2005 and while other board members may have had an input into strategy - Lawwell has since taken on the responsibility with gusto. Since then we have arguably lost countless millions due to this individual.
