....and the board are having a laugh. Well done the Green Brigade. If people had stayed quiet in the 90's we'd have been dead like brother hun. Stay quiet now and we'll have a team of honest pros treading water in the SPL.

They also have a collective hard on for their current winning run , against mainly part time teams and with a budget higher than the other teams in their division put together. Which is fair enough , it's up to them.
But it's a bit like me going out and kicking feck out of a wee 14 year old laddie then declaring myself Ultimate Fighting Champion Of Scotland !

The board now, compared with the board pre-Fergus are like night and day. Crowds also dropped down to 9k and the BoS were out to get us. Think that did more to change things than Celts for Change.

It's been stated, accurately, that we enjoy a massive financial advantage over our rivals in the Scottish game. Yes, there are no excuses for us not dominating, but this advantage wasn't something that happened fortuitously, we earned it. That was the club and fans chipping in together and building something special. 25 years ago, we weren't just a fraction of the size of the huns, we were on the same level as Aberdeen and Hearts (who regularly out-performed us on the pitch too). We didn't just race ahead of the pack, our rivals over-extended themselves, every one of them. Celtic are where they are because they were the only club to pay attention to financial realities when they needed to.

If we're failing in one area, it's that we're not getting value for our current spending - we need to spend smarter, and part of that involves getting the right football people in to help. But we are also being dragged back by the decline of the Scottish game. Unfortunately, there is very little we can do about that. We're swimming against the current.

Stoke just singed Shaqiri for twelve million. 5 years ago we beat them to sign Joe Ledley- there is no effing way that would happen now.
Yep. Stoke wouldn't be going for the standard of player Ledley was 5 years ago anymore. The fact they've signed Shaqiri, Bojan and Affelay are proof of this. If a new Ledley comes along, he'd be passed over by England's top clubs now.

We are not competing with England. Compare ourselves with more realistic leagues.

What strikes me as being significant is the quality of the players which the Dutch consistently produce. Even the ones who are below the standard of their top players can easily step into our side and instantly become our best player (and most valuable financial asset). How many Scottish-reared players can comfort themselves with the knowledge that if they don't make it here, they'll still be able to walk into a top Eredivisie side and use it as a stepping stone to one of the big leagues? We are so far behind in player development that it's the major reason for us needing to pay over the odds for imported duds.
We've a manager who sees player development as one of the key facets of his job and a board who are actively trying to set the club up that way as well.
If the board were serious about setting the club up this way, construction of the indoor pitch Ronny wanted would have started last summer. To me its the single biggest example of how he hasnt been backed. Several celtic managers and coaches have complained now about the lack of a facility like that and the impact the conditions at Lennoxtown has on player development and yet nothing has been done. Its easily affordable too.

If you want to successfully develop players you need to think long term. Proper facilities would benefit 100's of celtic players in the future, not just the 25 or so we have on our books now. Most of the boards commitment to youth development is a sham, a promise for a better tomorrow that will never come. We invest far less in youth development than the clubs were supposed to be emulating and we employ less scouts too.

:arrr: rant over

Been reflecting on our moneyball approach to signings and have come to the realisation that we've become marks for decent but not outstanding young players to get their ticket to fortune and mid-table mediocrity in the EPL.

Who was the last moneyball signing that went to a decent EPL team? We're signing players whose ultimate goal is to get a move to Southampton where winning every other match is an achievement, and Europe will never happen in a meaningful way. Is it any shock then that those players don't have what it takes to beat Malmo in a CL qualifier?

This is out future until Lawwell gets the bullet.

Big Vic "not mental or physical enough to play" for Southampton today, according to Koeman, 2nd game in a row he's missed. This shortly after a reference on SSN to him maybe being Spurs bound.

That'll be another £m or 2 for our Board to award themselves.

How many in the stadium today?
Officially 42 507 - but there were clearly fewer in the stadium than at the last game against ICT which was given as 42 700.

Difficult for me to guess how many were actually there as I sit in the North stand where the bulk of the crowd are situated - but the corporate section in the South stand was half empty.
Very rare for a Saturday 3pm kick off to be so poorly attended.

As everyone knows, the official attendance figures are a lie.
Really? How do we get that past the auditors?

If you mean that for VAT purposes all season books are included in each home attendance , even if some go unused for a particular game, then say that, but give up with the nonsense agenda with inaccuracies. There's enough to have a go at the Board for without making up stuff.

Davie Provan sums up our situation perfectly with a few simple words today.
"There are two obvious reasons for Celtic's failure. A lack of investment in the team and the lack of a proper coach.
Lawwell is responsible for both."

I don't think Ronny is a particularly bad coach. He's just not a very good manager.

At least identify the real culprit. Here is a clue, Lawwell is very, very good at his job.

Mikey said we had no sell on negotiated for Wanyama - it was a flat £12m. Nice profit for Saints, though.

Think you need to qualify that to PL WAS very good at his job.
The Moneyball thing was fresh when it was introduced but like many things it needs updated to keep abreast of changing times and circumstances!
PL got lucky with the risk on Lenny -who was never the first or even second choice!
He got luckier with the demise of the huns unless you believe that he planned that
Now he has gambled yet again on appointing someone with limited experience at a big club or in a top flight league -( no disrespect intended to all our Norwegian friends)
Should we be in the same position next August then we will have effectively wasted three years.
We will have lost out on many millions of pounds in CL revenue.
If all PL has up his sleeve is the appearance of the zombies in the same league - then there is no way that you can say he is doing a good job!

He has nothing to do with anything on the football side. Not even sure he knows who plays for us. :ph43r:
