A noble sentiment, but probably about £16 short of being able to bid for an experienced centre back. |

If you do a valuation of our squad over the last 4yrs or so that would give you a feel for the damage being done As loan players of no value to us And repeated failure to get into cl impacts on reinvestment and growth in asset value Combined with falling revenues across numerous areas even on a purely accounting analysis of what's going on it'd be seen as a clustereff of monumental proportions |

experienced centre-back? pah! what you want is a young guy with a handful of starts somewhere else who can't quite make the grade but can learn his trade here, making his mistakes in a mickey mouse league and being average/below average in europe before either going back or being sold for a massive profit get with the programme |

The board are as highly regarded by the fans at the moment as the White/Kelly chuckle brothers show was back in the nineties. Can't remember such an apathy among the support in decades and that's down to an agenda of just spending enough to win the league every year and not giving a eff whether we get to Champions League or not. Lawwell and the rest must be pissing themselves laughing at how much the support puts up with and mostly still come back for more. Edited by kewlcelt, 29 Aug 2015, 04:34 PM.

The whole 'holding on to players' is another argument for another time. My point was that Ajax and the likes aren't competing in the same markets as the Bundesliga clubs are. The rich neighbour thing isn't new in football. It's been happening since the game went professional. Whining and bitching about the riches of England is a nonsense. It's an easy out. We need to have a long hard look at what's going wrong in our house before we look at what others have. |

I tried to think back to my time following celtic in europe, which was mainly the mid to late 70s and 80s. I have to say the difference now is the absence of the hun. IN all the years we failed miserably (for the most part) in europe we were consoled with the thought of looking over our shoulder at the hun and l to beating them. IN that period for me beating them was the highlight of the season . In all this downsizing, apart from salaries, I think the board are gambling on a return of the tribute huns to re-awaking the apathetic fans. I'm not sure it will work with the current generation as the social circumstances of discrimination and bigotry are not as prevalent in society. The billy and a tim card might not work for them the next day! |

Officially 42 507 - but there were clearly fewer in the stadium than at the last game against ICT which was given as 42 700. Difficult for me to guess how many were actually there as I sit in the North stand where the bulk of the crowd are situated - but the corporate section in the South stand was half empty. Very rare for a Saturday 3pm kick off to be so poorly attended. |

That's all very well, and whilst I do think we can be our own worst enemy, the big neighbour thing is effing with a lot of teams the same way it is with us. It's not just an easy scape goat for us to pin all our problems on, but it is a massive issue. Stoke just singed Shaqiri for twelve million. 5 years ago we beat them to sign Joe Ledley- there is no effing way that would happen now. When Alan Pardew was on Goals on Sunday he was talking about how Palace have scouts in all the tops leagues watching the best teams. Ayew, a very good young player playing for a massive club, now goes to a club the size of Swansea. The money in all the top leagues is forcing Celtic further and further down the list clubs a player would want to play for. Calling the ridiculous wealth in the big leagues compared to ours an "easy out" isn't true imo. It's the way football is going now. It's a pretty massive factor in the decline at the club, as it is with so many others. ***This post is not a defence of the terrible way in which we have been run recently*** |

The lack of criticism towards this board since Tuesday is genuinely staggering. The lack of criticism aimed at the board today at the game was (the GB excepted) was bewildering. Lawwell the carrot doesn't even need to firefight anymore. The support just sit there (or not) and take it. Slow lane? We're just about to back up off the cliff. |

I'm with you on that. The big difficulty is that, whether a player is developed in-house or acquired from elsewhere, the problem remains that clubs like Celtic and Ajax don't get the benefit of them for very long before they're scooped up by a far wealthier club. That's applied to us equally in the case of a "discovery" such as Wanyama or a home grown player like McGeady. Where the Dutch are so far ahead of us is in the calibre of players which they produce themselves. I'd say that we're at least thirty years behind them in that respect. Rather than buy in a Pukki or a Bangura, Ajax are more likely to bring through a player from their own development programme to replace a departing star. So when Van Basten goes to AC Milan, Bergkamp gets his chance. Now, I'm fairly certain that if Celtic had a player like Bergkamp coming through from Lennoxtown, we wouldn't be signing haddies like Stokes or Çiftçi and in that respect, Ajax aren't as likely to try to fill their team with imports as a stopgap. But even when they do buy in a "project", they unearth a phenomenal talent such as Ibrahimovic (from Malmo!) while we're still hoping we've definitely seen the back of Ian Wright or feeling Marco Viduka had been counting the days until he could get away from Celtic Park once and for all. Either way, Celtic and Ajax don't hold on to their most important players for very long but Ajax seem to give themselves a better chance of getting better replacements because they know more about who they're bringing in, the player needs less time to settle and they'll generally get a bit more service out of him before he departs for big bucks. That money, in turn, finances the next cycle of the development programme. For whatever reason, Celtic can't seem to get onto that path. I don't doubt that they've tried very hard; as far back as the mid-nineties, Tommy Burns spoke of his ambition to emulate the Ajax model. But we seem unable to operate it as successfully. I don't know how Dutch teams manage to get several seasons of first team football out of a RVP or a huntelaar while we get next to no benefit from an Islam Feruz. But the bottom line is that Dutch clubs don't have the same desperate need to compete for the signatures of the duds that we keep buying when they can deem players such as VVD, JVoH and Big Pierre as replaceable. I would say about 30000 which I don't think is too bad.In the early 1980's when we had a good team we were getting between 15000 and 20000 for a game like this. The 60000 crowds for leagues games were never going last. |
