Celtic could spend £8m in summer on big-name signing to boost Lennon's Champions League hopes, says Lawwell

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell has revealed he could splash out £8million on a marquee player in the summer to boost Neil Lennon’s assault on the Champions League.

The Parkhead club announced pre-tax profits of £21.3m in the six months to December 31, 2013 – £6.4m up on the previous year’s figure.

That was largely down to the sales of Victor Wanyama (£12.5m) Gary Hooper (£5.2m) and Kelvin Wilson (£2.5m) which more than countered an 11 per cent decrease in revenue from £50.1m in 2012 to £44.8m.

Celtic now have £5.7m in the bank and, with Lawwell describing the Scottish champions as arguably being in the best financial health in their history, he pledged to make up to £8m available for one player - so long as Lennon and his scouting team can convince him the target represents value for money.

‘Neil will have substantial funds to spend in the summer,’ said Lawwell.

‘We’re in arguably the best financial state we’ve ever been in but it makes no sense to keep the money in the bank. We want to invest in the club by investing in good footballers that create value for the club.

‘Celtic can buy a £6-8m player if the value is there.

‘We would not buy a 29-year-old at £8m on a four-year contract at £40,000 a week because that is dead money. But if there’s value in signing an £8m player we will look at it.’

Celtic recruited £2m Stefan Johansen, £1m Leigh Griffiths and £100,000 Holmbert Fridjonsson last month, but Lawwell admitted he wanted more new recruits.

He said: ‘If there was any disappointment in January it was that we wanted to get as many players in as we could, to embed them and have them settled for the qualifiers. But it was very difficult and it’s getting more and more difficult, especially in January.

‘We made a few bids, and we felt we were in a good position to get players, but if clubs don’t want to sell then there’s nothing you can do.

‘We would like to get our business done early this summer, to get one or two in to make it more possible to get through the qualifiers. But there are no guarantees.’

Meanwhile, Lawwell confirmed that Celtic’s Champions League qualifiers are likely to take place at Murrayfield as Celtic Park is out of use due to the Commonwealth Games.

It could mean the Parkhead team are the first to use the new hybrid grass pitch being installed at the rugby stadium.

‘It’s a high possibility but not a done deal,’ he said. ‘It might be confirmed in the next two or three weeks. There were other options we looked at, smaller grounds in Scotland, but we have an obligation to our season-ticket holders to give them the opportunity to buy a ticket for the game. To limit that wouldn’t be right.

So, without giving away my negotiating position, Murrayfield is the most likely. Am I confident the new pitch there would be laid and ready in time? It would have to be, yes.’

Lawwell also paid tribute to Lennon after he was abused by fans while attending the League Cup semi final between Aberdeen and St Johnstone at Tynecastle last weekend. The chief executive believes Lennon has had to endure more flak than any manager in Scottish history and may now look to bolster his personal security.

‘I feel for Neil – it was totally and utterly unacceptable. We have a duty and responsibility to protect Neil and he will be given that support. Kevin (his minder) doesn’t follow him around every day but he might have to now.

‘Neil’s life is not his own. He has had to put up with things no manager in Scottish football has had to contend with.

‘But Neil is a strong, remarkable character and his passion for Celtic and his love of the job is what has kept him here.

I suppose there is no guarantee's, eh Pete?

Why go on about a 'lost 10m' when last year's turnover saw an increase of 24m from Rangers last season in the league? Rangers decline has cost us in one pocket but has also allowed us to stuff significantly more cash in the other. This lost 10m is a lot of nonsense. Income is up, profits are up, bank debt is gone and we are sitting on cash. Quite why people are buying this lost 10m pish is beyond me.
It's more than just an annoying thing for the Chief Exec to allude to, let alone say - I find it properly downright shameful. Even if it were true, what would be the point in moaning about it? The huns died and that's that. It was inevitable, it was self induced, it was at worst a necessary financial blow the league and at best one of the great, positive defining moments in Scottish football. We went into debt trying to keep up with their unsustainable, dishonest spending, so telling us we're worse off now they're gone? :cuckoo:

The fact it's ostensibly a complete lie is cause for real anger. It's beyond insulting to the fans. Lawwell could and quite possibly should be facing complete mutiny.
It's not a complete lie - domestic income could very well be down by 10m per season. It's just a meaningless number in the overall picture, completely without context and utterly disingenuous.
It's an amazingly round number - sounds like a figure he just plucked out of the air to back up his unconvincing argument.

For a start all the kids tickets at £50 a pop were already £50 so there is no £100 loss of income there.

I do believe that only Celtic could de-stabilize themselves and turn their fans angry towards them from a position of immense strength in a one horse crappy league.

#celticfamily #believe #because #bollocks
It's pretty amazing isn't it.

Fool that I am I thought that they would see this as an opportunity to build (with almost guaranteed European income) a position of astonishing strength where you could have a team built around a strong core and still have the luxury of being able to bring in young talent when you chose due to the lead that we should have in the league.

Instead of that we've moaned about an imaginary loos of revenue because some other team imploded, gone on a f**king fire sale and failed to bring anyone decent to the team before hiring a new manager and telling him to trawl round seeing what flotsam and jetsam was laying about the various leagues scrap heaps he could pick up on loan instead of investing.

I actually now cgaf.

He's made my club nothing short of an embarrassment.

I make no apologies for that description.
This isn't about our 'rude health' or the state of the huns, it's about Celtic supporters now being fleeced on an alarming scale.

Over £30m in transfers last few seasons, £21m profit in March?

Failed at our second chance at Europe, a £20m game and no new players other than a free goalkeeper and a Man City loan.

It's absolutely baffling and alarm bells have been going off for a couple of seasons with no action at all on the behalf of the board.

Abysmal.

As it currently stands we have one proven centre half and no proven strikers. Our best goalkeeper has been effectively retired for the best part of 3 years and we have a load of loan signings who will probably move on at the end of the season. If Lawell and Co think this is acceptable they need to eff off.

This transfer window tells us something we probably already know, that the guys running our club don't deserve to be in that position.

Not one permanent signing after bringing in £11 million in transfer fees this summer. We've been fleeced before but this season is the pinnacle by a board and CEO who really don't give a eff what we have on the pitch.

Dont forget about the bloody abject humiliation that was the Legia games, a team sitting 10th in the Polish league. 6 1 going on 10 1,

if anyone can say that the board are doing a good job and have a strategy for the team this proves they dont have a bloody clue.

i remember a thread a while ago titled "they embarrassed the hoops" well Lawwell embarrassed the hoops and should be sacked for incompetence.

Good work tonight but FAR, far too late and it doesn't change anything.

The calls for boycotts, protests et al might now die down, but the disillusionment with how our board operates still remains.

Again, why oh why couldn't Scepovic or Giudetti have been signed before the maribor games?
Penny pinching cost us a Champions League spot, and the tight arsed board shouldnt be allowed to escape that.

Seconded. There is a lot of euphoria at the moment over 1 signing, and another guy on loan. This is a calculated move by the board to avert a mob gathering in the car park.

5 loans - 1 of whom was signed while injured
1 proper transfer
and an injury prone keeper from the dole queue. ( with no young backup brought in for a fee - leaves us 2 keepers plus Fasan.)

11 million recouped in transfer fees,
wage savings on the wasters who have been loaned out
lost our top keeper
lost a striker who could probably have scored goals (Watt)
lost another forward who was a threat in europe (Samaras)

We sold the players before the qualifiers, but didn't sign replacements until after we were knocked out.

Negligence, and a signing at 5 to midnight on deadline day doesn't change that.

Why would we sign a young backup if we have Fasan (highly rated apparently)?

Agree with the rest though.
