Very good series of posts murphio calling out pl distortions on accounts

So at a time when we are given a free pass in Scotland to the league

And almost a free pass to the cl

And year on year revenues in championship and epl move transfer fees and wages higher across numerous leagues

The board decide to pursue a policy of investment in aggressively repayment of all debt using our revenues in the business but not on the team

The board decide to fund this strategy by selling all of our quality assets

Leaving virtually nothing of worth

And arrogantly believe that as wages and transfer fees on their assessment away from their reach that rather than alter their policy in the face of reality to split squad in to distinct quality, self reared and lower quality on distinct wage structure

They will adopt their naemoneyball

To recruit only no fee and reduced wages assets of poorer quality

To recruit cheaper and cheaper management teams

To give the football management team less and less power on recruitment and the academy

To gamble with some 20-25% of revenues each year

To drive down entertainment hitting gates hospitality merchandising and sponsorship

To alienate the support

And then tell them they don't understand football the business of football that rangers are the panacea and that they are Celtic supporters

Well then they can eff off - cause not only are the clueless about Celtic and football they are clueless on business

Good post

We've got no product on the park but at least our stadium has WIFI eh?
The wifi is crap and all. Can't check scores in live score or sky sports, can't access the BBC.

You can still get onto KDS though.
KDS still gets past the KGB etc as well, some man Fitzpas

The strategy of the board regarding the debt doesn't make any sense.

Which leads me to think they are preparing for something round the corner which they are aware of and we are not.

Lennons resignation, Petrescus "problems at Celtic," comment and Lawell's attempts to bluff his way through that interview with comments which have no relation to the reality of our situation are ominous.

Lawwell is now saying that the team he calls Rangers is costing us half the champions league pot ? I think it's best we don't know what our board was saying behind the scenes when Rangers snuffed it . Lawwell what a slime ball
Hello? Is that me you're looking for?

Now that Vvd is away the cupboard is bare.

We'd be lucky to get £10m for the entire remaining squad.

Owen Coyle was on Absolute Radio and the presenter asked him was he offered the Celtic job. Interesting response, spoke about Wigan saying how at the time he was sacked they were just outside the play off spot but him and the Chairman didnt see eye to eye on how things should go going forward. Said he needed the trust and to know how he saw things would be the way things would go. So never out right denied our interest but implying if he was sought after the board and himself had a different vision of where things were to go.

That is the one million dollar question for me. If our financial well-being really does depend on selling at least one big player every season, then we really are done for because once Van Dijk leaves there is no one left to sell. It is an incredible thing for Lawwell to admit (claim).

Lawwell at beginning of year

Quote:

arguably the best financial state we’ve ever been in

Quote:

CELTIC chief executive Peter Lawwell described the club as being in “arguably the best financial state we’ve ever been in” after announcing pre-tax profits of £21.3m in the half-year accounts published yesterday.

This headline figure, achieved through £16.5m player sales and participation in the Champions League, resulted in the club sitting with £5.7m cash in the bank as at 31 December.

Lawwell expressed his “delight” at a set of results unrivalled in the modern age of the game in this country. “It sets us up,” he said. “We have a real strong foundation to face the future and the challenges of Scottish football. It’s allowed us to do a wee bit more. We have a multi-million pound project going on outside the stadium. We’ve given the fans several million pounds in cash back [through money off season tickets] and we’ve bought some players. It allows us to go into the summer transfer window from a very good standing to try to strengthen before
the Champions League.”

Against the backdrop of banking such large sums – principally drawn from the £20m earnings raised from reaching the group stages of European football’s blue-riband tournament allied to the sums raked in from Victor Wanyama, Gary Hooper and Kelvin Wilson being sold in the summer – supporters expected more to go out on new strikers in the January transfer window than the around £1m paid to acquire Leigh Griffiths from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Celtic’s rude financial health has inevitably then created a tension between fans and club over the perception that the board are sitting on profits.

“We are spending the money,” Lawwell countered. “We are spending on the outside and giving the fans something back. The money is there to be re-invested in the squad. Why wouldn’t we do that? We have a track record of buying players. It makes no sense to keep the money in the bank and we would rather invest in the business and that’s investing in good footballers that create value for the club. We are always about value.

“Celtic can buy a £6-8 million player if the value is there. We would not buy a 29-year-old at £8 million on a four-year contract at £40,000 a week because that is dead money. If there is value in signing an £8 million player we will look at it. We wanted to get as many in as we could [in January] and allow us to have them embedded and settled for the qualifiers, but it was very difficult. Neil [Lennon] is delighted with the players we’ve got in and the business we’ve done.”

Lawwell ridiculed suggestions that the redevelopment work to make the area around Celtic Park better had been made possible by cosy deals struck with Glasgow City Council and the organisers of the Commonwealth Games; the opening ceremony of which will be hosted in the stadium. “We are paying for it: the land purchases and all the work,” he said.

The Celtic chief executive was also dismissive of the grumbling by Rangers manager Ally McCoist the previous day over the decision by the SPFL to stage the League Cup final at Celtic Park in March, two months before the arena also plays host to the Scottish Cup final. “It’s the pre-eminent stadium in Scotland, it’s the biggest and the best and, of course, we were going to get it, but for no other reason. If it was practically impossible to have it here then clearly it should have gone to Ibrox, but this would have been the first choice, I’d have thought,” Lawwell said. “[Any implication that the venue was chosen because Celtic are pulling the strings in Scottish football] is totally unhelpful. People have got to see things for what they are. We’ve got to trust the people that are running the game to do the right thing.”

Lawwell also played down a report that Murrayfield will host the club’s early Champions League qualifiers while Celtic Park is out of action in the run-up to the Commonwealth Games. “It’s not a done deal. It might be confirmed in the next two or three weeks. We looked at smaller grounds in Scotland, but without giving away my negotiating position, Murrayfield is the most likely. We have an obligation to our season-ticket holders to give them the opportunity to buy a ticket for the game. To limit that wouldn’t
be right.”

The board have easily and effectively neutered the support with a vision of Celtic's future as nothing more than a shop window for the EPL. It's been readily accepted that we are, despite having very little debt and no competition, no better than a club who gamble on half formed footballers in the hope of turning a profit and occasionally scrape into the Champions League. The expectation management has been so effective that this vision - despite its lack of success - is now actively championed amongst a section of the support. There are fans who will watch today's game and still think that it's going to "come good," if we keep chugging down this road.

I'd love a titled Director of Football, someone who is ultimately accountable for Pukki, Balde and the pish that's on the park at the moment.

Our acting Director of Football has been an utter failure and should stick to running the company.

There is more made up bull shampoo from Lawwell.

He was pointing out (I think it was in the Sunday Herald) that Scottish football is so bad financially that Sevco can't raise £10M and are struggling to raise £4M. Of course the context of Newco's woes was left out - i.e. the investment is purely to in order for them to keep going for this season and that the reason that nobody is touching them awitha barge-pole is due to how they are un.

They guy must think we all have zips at the back of our heads.

How the eff does a majority shareholder like Dermott Desmond let one of his high profile "businesses" disintegrate in front of his eyes? Surely you would inject investment at this point? No?

He obviously does not give a eff. The sooner we're rid of him..
